﴾ For their covering as well, and their saying against Mary a great buhtān (a falsehood that stuns). ﴿
A verse with no verb in it: two verbal nouns joined by wa to what was counted in the verse before, so it is a link in the chain opened by "So, for their undoing". The bāʾ is repeated in "for their covering" after the words "Rather, Allah has set a stamp upon them for their covering, so they do not give trust, except a little" came between the chain and its continuation, so the repeated bāʾ takes up the count again after this break. The construction admits two attachments: "for their covering" joined to "So, for their undoing" at the head of the chain, or joined to the "for their covering" just before it, so that it enters into the cause of the stamp.
Covering, kufr, from k-f-r, is a screen that hides what is under it and stays upon it, and this is the third time it comes in the two verses: "their covering over the signs of Allah", with a named object; "for their covering", as the cause of the stamp; and here "for their covering", absolute, with nothing attached to it. The wording can take this covering to be the first one repeated so that what follows can join it, or another covering that goes together with what comes next, their saying about Mary.
The cause that follows the covering is a saying. Saying, qawl, from q-w-l, is a sound released from the mouth that stays ascribed to its speaker, and the possessive in "their saying" confirms this ascription, so the speech that came out of them is counted against them in the chain of causes. It is the second saying counted for them there after "our hearts are wrapped"; the first was told in its own words, and the second is described by the name the Book gave it.
ʿAlā, "against", makes the saying fall upon Mary and be laid on her; of this use in the Book is "saying against Allah" for what is falsely ascribed to Him: ﴿وَيَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ الْكَذِبَ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ﴾, "they say against Allah what is false, knowingly". Mary, Maryam, is a name that enters this Surah here for the first time, and it returns in the next verse with her son attached to it: ﴿الْمَسِيحَ عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ﴾, "the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary".
The saying is then named: "a great buhtān". Buhtān, from b-h-t, is a throwing of falsehood at someone that cuts off the speech of the one it is thrown at, so that he is held back from reply and finds nothing to say. Buhtān comes three times in this Surah: in the twentieth verse and in the hundred and twelfth, paired in both with "a manifest burden", and here described by "great" alone. In the hundred and twelfth the buhtān is a throwing at an innocent of what he did not earn: ﴿ثُمَّ يَرْمِ بِهِ بَرِيئًا فَقَدِ احْتَمَلَ بُهْتَانًا﴾, "then throws it at one who is clear of it, has taken up a falsehood that stuns"; so naming the saying buhtān judges it void, and Mary clear of what she was charged with.
ʿAẓīman, "great", from ʿ-ẓ-m, is what has knit together until its bulk grew large and heavy, so the buhtān here is large in bulk and heavy in its fall upon the one it was laid on. Buhtānan is in the accusative, and it may be the object of the verbal noun "their saying", as one says qāla kadhiban, "he said a lie", or a verbal noun showing the kind of saying: a saying that is buhtān. In the chain this saying stands between the covering and another saying, about her son, which the next verse counts.
The verse is a link in the chain of causes opened by "So, for their undoing", with no verb in it; the bāʾ is repeated after the break made by the stamp and takes up the count again, and its joining reaches both the head of the chain and the cause of the stamp just before. It holds two causes: a covering, from k-f-r, that comes here absolute after it came once upon "the signs of Allah" and once as the cause of the stamp; and a saying, from q-w-l, that stays ascribed to its speakers, laid upon Mary by ʿalā, which the verse names a buhtān, from b-h-t, a throwing that holds its target back from reply, and great, from ʿ-ẓ-m, heavy in bulk. In the hundred and twelfth verse a buhtān is a throwing at the innocent of what the innocent did not earn, so naming the saying so judges it void and her clear of what she was charged with, and her name, which enters the Surah here, returns in the next verse with her son attached to it.
