Commentary
After verses that set out what is forbidden and what is made lawful, what is to be given and what one holds back from, the speech rises from the detail to the will behind it: "Allah wills". Irāda, will, is from r-w-d; from it comes al-rāʾid, the one who goes ahead of the people seeking pasture for them, so will is an intent that turns toward an aim and makes for it. This verb stands at the head of three successive verses, this one, the one after it and the one after that, so after the rulings the Surah names what is intended by them.
The first thing willed is "to make clear to you". Tabyīn is from b-y-n; bayn is what separates two things, so making clear is bringing a thing out apart from what mingles with it until it is seen by itself, and the doubled middle letter of yubayyina multiplies this separating. The preceding verses ran through one separation after another: what is forbidden from what is made lawful, the one who fortifies from the one who pours out, the fixed portion from what is agreed upon after it. After "wills" the verb comes here with li-, and with an in the two verses that follow; the li- turns the will toward an aim to which what came before leads, so the bounds that were set out were meant for making clear. Yubayyina is left without a stated object, so the making clear covers what came before and what is still to come.
The second is "to guide you along the ways of those who were before you". Hidāya is from h-d-y, a going ahead of the traveller that carries him along his road; from it comes al-hādī, the one in front who shows the way, and hawādī al-khayl, the necks of horses that go before them. The verb here takes the roads themselves as its object, "guide you the ways", so guidance is a carrying of those addressed along particular roads. Sunan is the plural of sunna, from s-n-n: the sanan of a road is its course, trodden until it became plain, and one says sanna al-ḥadīda of passing iron over the whetstone again and again until it is sharp.
"Those who were before you" are known in the verse by their going first alone, so the roads along which those addressed are guided are roads others walked before them, and what was set out in these verses is joined to old, well-trodden paths. In Āl ʿImrān the two words come together in a statement about the past, ﴿قَدْ خَلَتْ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ سُنَنٌ﴾, "patterns have passed before you": the sunan there are courses that have run their way and whose outcomes are looked into, and here they are roads along which those addressed are guided.
The third is "and to turn toward you". Tawba is from t-w-b, a return that follows a letting go, and tāba ʿalayhi is to turn back to someone with kindness, while ʿalā makes this turning come down upon those addressed from above. The three come in order: a making clear that uncovers the road, a guidance that carries along it, and a turning back toward them after the two. In Ṭā Hā the two verbs of turning and guiding stand together in a single verse: ﴿فَتَابَ عَلَيْهِ وَهَدَىٰ﴾, "and turned toward him, and guided".
The verse closes with "Allah is knowing, wise", and the verse on turning in this Surah closed with the same two names: ﴿فَأُولَٰئِكَ يَتُوبُ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ ۗ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا﴾, "those are the ones toward whom Allah turns; Allah has ever been knowing, wise". ʿAlīm is from ʿ-l-m and ḥakīm from ḥ-k-m, so the will the verse announces comes from a knowledge of what is to be made clear and of who is to be guided, and from a wisdom that sets the roads in their places and holds the traveller to them.
The verse rises from the detail of the bounds to the will behind them, and with "wills" it opens a chain of three verses. The first thing willed is a making clear, from b-y-n, that sets a thing apart from what mingles with it; it comes with li- and so turns toward an aim to which the preceding detail leads. Then comes a guidance, from h-d-y, that carries those addressed along sunan, from s-n-n, roads trodden by those before them, and then a turning, from t-w-b, back toward them. It closes on knowledge and wisdom, the two names that closed the verse on turning earlier, so the bounds that were set out are meant to be seen, to be walked as a trodden road, and to carry a turning back toward whoever walks it.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as: Allah wants to make clear to you what He has made lawful for you and what He has forbidden you, to direct you to the ways of those among the people of truth who came before you, and to turn toward you from what you were upon before that. The li- of li-yubayyina is explained by the grammarians in several ways: a li- of purpose with the object of the will left unstated, or a li- standing in the place of an.
A reading that fixes what is made clear as the lawful and the forbidden, and makes the sunan the ways of the people of truth who came before.
A root-reading
Yurīdu (root r-w-d): an intent that goes ahead toward its aim as the scout goes ahead. Yubayyina (root b-y-n): bringing a thing out apart from what mingles with it. Yahdiyakum (root h-d-y): a going ahead that carries the traveller along his road. Sunan (root s-n-n): roads trodden by feet until they became plain. Yatūba (root t-w-b): a return that follows a letting go. The verse becomes: "Allah means to show you the bounds set apart and plain, to carry you along roads trodden by those who were before you, and to turn back toward you; Allah is knowing, wise."
A reading that hears in the verse a road that is uncovered, walked and returned to.
The two readings do not conflict. The first fixes what is made clear and who went before; the second hears, in the roots, a road that is uncovered, then walked, then returned to. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Making clear, from b-y-n, is an opening that brings the inner out into view and sets a thing apart from what surrounds it; guidance, from h-d-y, is a gentle going ahead in front of the traveller; sunan, from s-n-n, is a narrow channel through which everyone who takes it passes until it becomes a road; turning, from t-w-b, is a letting go followed by a return that stretches on; and will, from r-w-d, is an effort that goes ahead toward its aim. The letters draw a single road: it is aimed at, then uncovered, then walked; feet have trodden it before, and for whoever has let go of it there is a way back.
Second: the scene
A people has had a long list of bounds recited to them: which near kinswomen are not to be married, who may be married and with what wealth, what dues are to be given, and when patience is better. Then the counting stops and the gaze rises to what lies behind it: a will that wills to make clear, to guide along roads others have walked, and to turn back toward them. Those addressed stand in the scene at the start of a road on which many walkers went before them.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
Whenever a group receives an order of kinship and marriage, it receives with it roads older than itself: the bounds that join people and separate them in this matter rarely begin from nothing, and most of them are inherited and well trodden, made clear again and refined. A second pattern recurs in the verse: an order that announces its aim after setting out its detail is nearer to being understood and carried, and a road that is made clear and guided along still needs a door of return for whoever strays from it, which is why the verse gathers making clear, guidance and turning into a single will.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
"The ways of those who were before you" may parallel what students of societies observe, that hardly any human group has been found that does not forbid union between parent and child and between brother and sister, so that this prohibition is counted among the most widespread rules in humankind; Claude Lévi-Strauss saw in it the threshold at which kinship becomes a social order, since it obliges families to marry into one another and so to be joined by marriage. It may perhaps also parallel the fact that the oldest collections of written law to reach us from the ancient Near East, such as the laws of Hammurabi in the eighteenth century before the common era, contain articles punishing a man who goes in to his daughter, his son's wife or his mother, so that the bounds of these verses would lie on an old and well-trodden road.
Among these ways there may be what Edvard Westermarck proposed at the end of the nineteenth century, that those who grow up together in the first years of childhood develop an aversion to union with one another; later studies of children raised together in communal dwellings, and of marriages arranged between a man and a girl brought up from infancy in his family's house, have been read as evidence for this proposal. There may be, in the verse of prohibition making suckling a tie by which it names a mother and a sister, and in its describing the stepdaughters as "in your laps", a pointer that a shared upbringing makes of nearness what lineage makes of it.
