﴾ He said: go. Then whoever of them follows you, Jahannam is the requital of you all, a requital kept whole. ﴿
A question, a claim, an oath and a request for reprieve came before, in one long verse, and the answer is a single word.
The answer is not "I have put you back." The request is not answered in its own wording, the argument it was built on is not debated, and nothing is returned to him about the material he argued from. He is commanded to move on, and the address is cut off at its edge.
The verb of going, in its letters, is a piercing that runs through an emptiness nothing obstructs and then opens onto an exit. So the word puts him out and does not debate with him. He asked for a respite and was told to move on; he was not answered in the wording of what he asked.
Here lies the finest thing in the verse. The claim was "I shall surely take his offspring by the hold within," in which they are the object and he is the subject. The answer says "follows you," in which they are the subject and he is the object.
Nothing is denied him, and his oath is not broken; only the grammatical station is moved. The grip he claimed inside the hollow has become a step walked in the open, and the one whose step it is is the one who walks.
The word "whoever" is conditional, so there is no report here of anything that has happened, only a ruling hung on its happening. "Of them" is partitive: it is not said that they are all of them, nor that they are few. The number was taken out of the claimant's hand and put into the condition.
The kāf and the mīm repay attention. The verse does not say "their requital," nor the singular "your requital," nor the two set apart; it says jazāʾukum, "the requital of you all," and the caller and the one who answered him are gathered into one word.
Requital has its own entry in the glossary: a measure that separates from what has gathered out of the act and passes back to its doer. This image connects recompense to the measure of the deed and to its doer, without by itself determining how that recompense is brought about. What this verse adds is that the pronoun is one for two acts, a calling and a following. One outcome came back over both, because the two had met on one road.
Jazāʾan, "a requital," is an absolute object: the word of the statement is repeated in the accusative, so the ruling is fastened and no slackness is left in it. The repetition serves to cut off any possibility of lightening, not to lengthen.
Then mawfūran, "kept whole," is a passive participle from w-f-r: gathered, with nothing taken off it. Wafr is what has been enclosed and so kept entire, and then runs on freely; no measure fell short, and no edge was trimmed away.
Here the facing-off can be heard. The one who swore closed his oath with a breach he made with his own hand, "all but a few"; the answer closes with a word whose whole meaning is that there is no breach in it. A claim with a hole in it is set against a requital that cannot be holed.
The long verse is answered with a single word. The answer is not "I have put you back," and the argument is not debated; he is only commanded to move on, with a verb whose letters are a piercing through an emptiness that ends in an exit. Then the grammar shifts, and the shift is the whole answer: those who were the object in "I shall surely take" have become the subject in "follows you," and the grip claimed inside the hollow has become a walking in the open. "Whoever" is conditional, so nothing is reported as having happened, and "of them" is partitive, pulling the number out of the claimant's hand. A single pronoun then gathers the caller and the one who answers in "the requital of you all," and requital, in the glossary, is what comes out of the deed cut to its own measure and then returns to its doer: since the road was one, the outcome was one. The verbal noun is set in the accusative for emphasis and qualified by "kept whole," that is, enclosed, with nothing taken off it. So the verse that ended on an exception the swearer made inside his own oath is faced by a verse that ends by denying any exception in the requital. He holed his own claim, and he was told that what comes back to him has no hole in it.
