﴾ And if We willed, We would surely go off with what We revealed to you; then you would find for yourself, concerning it, none entrusted with it against Us. ﴿
The lām on la-in is the prop of an oath that is never spoken; then comes the particle of condition; then the answer arrives braced with a lām and a heavy nūn: la-nadhhabanna. The whole construction is emphasis laid over emphasis. And notice what it is hung upon. It was not said "and if they cover it over," nor "and if they turn aside," nor "and if they do wrong." It was hung upon "if We willed," and on nothing else. There is no cause in the world that calls the taking down, and no act of anyone that earns it. The condition is a willing, not a wrongdoing. And the root sh-y-ʾ runs on, piercing and extended, until the glottal stop cuts it and it stands determined; from it Arabic has shayʾ, a thing, for whatever has become determinate enough to be pointed at. So willing is the singling out of one from among the possible, and the cutting off of the rest.
The verb is intransitive and made transitive by a bāʾ: "We go off with it." Had ruin been meant it would have said "We would destroy it"; had erasure been meant it would have said "We would wipe it out." It said "We would go off with it," and the bāʾ makes what it governs a companion of the one who goes. The root dh-h-b is a passing on that pierces so that its place stands empty, and then goes out from it. So the taking here is a departure that carries what was sent down and moves off with it, not a breaking that leaves rubble behind. The place is left vacant, and no trace remains in it to be gathered. And five verses back the sūra said that the hollow empties of its own accord. This one says that what was revealed may have its place emptied by a will, not by a nature. There an emptying that comes from inside the thing; here an emptying that comes only from a will above it.
What would be taken is not named. It was not said "the recitation," nor "the writing." It was said "what We revealed to you": a relative pronoun and one relative clause, and that clause is the act of the one who revealed it. This is the sūra's practice in more than one place. It says ﴿الرُّؤْيَا الَّتِي أَرَيْنَاكَ﴾ and identifies by the showing rather than by the thing shown. Here it identifies by the revealing rather than by the thing revealed. In both cases what is stated is a doer and a deed, and what is described is left without description. And the root w-ḥ-y is a bound conveying that runs inside a narrow channel and reaches one in particular. Which is why it says "to you" in the singular: a narrow course that opens for no one but its own receiver, and that is the very thing threatened with removal.
Thumma, not the fāʾ. Had it said "and then at once you would not find," the losing would have clung to the taking in the same instant. Thumma holds the two apart and leaves a stretch in which one may search and find nothing. The lack shows itself after the searching, not before it. And "you would find" is singular, addressed to one. The sūra said this same verb in the plural elsewhere: ﴿ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوا لَكُمْ وَكِيلًا﴾. There a group does not find; here one man does not find. One shape, and the number changed.
Before the thing denied is named, three prepositional phrases are lined up ahead of it: "for you," then "concerning it," then "against Us." For whom, in what matter, and facing whom. Only then comes "one entrusted." So the denial is not absolute but fenced by three restrictions, each closing off a side. The sense is not that such a one does not exist at all; the sense is that none is to be found who would stand for you, in this matter, facing the one who takes. And read "against Us" in particular. The three restrictions run out into this one: the direction in which the entrusted one is sought is the direction of the speaker himself. Nothing in the line denies that there is one entrusted; what is denied is one entrusted on that side. And this is the fifth and last occurrence of the word in the sūra. Four of the five are denials and one is an affirmation, and the affirmation alone is ﴿وَكَفَىٰ بِرَبِّكَ وَكِيلًا﴾. Taking one was forbidden in the sūra's second verse, ﴿أَلَّا تَتَّخِذُوا مِن دُونِي وَكِيلًا﴾, and it was denied of the one addressed before this: ﴿وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَكِيلًا﴾. This is the fourth denial, and the final one. And the root w-k-l is the tying of a matter to one who holds it and takes it into his keeping so that it stays with him; the word cannot be conceived without a named bearer. The sūra veils the bearer four times and names him once. Whoever gathers the five sees that the denial does not empty the place of a bearer; it returns the place to the only bearer it named.
The condition is a will and not a wrongdoing, and the taking is a carrying away and not a breaking. Three restrictions fence the denial, and the last of them settles it: what cannot be found is a keeper on that particular side.
