﴾ And they ask you about al-rūḥ. Say: al-rūḥ is of my Lord's command, and you were given, of the knowledge, only a little. ﴿
A word of this page must be said first. The Arabic word the questioners use is kept here in Arabic, as al-rūḥ, and is not replaced by an English word. That is not evasion; it is the verse's own procedure, as the next paragraphs show. Any English noun put in its place would be an answer, and the answer given is not of that kind.
The verb is in the ongoing present, not the past. It was not said "and they asked you," which would report one occasion; it was said "they ask you," which is a question repeated and renewed. And those who ask are a bare plural pronoun with no antecedent in the line. They are not named, not described, and not traced to anyone. The verse carries the question across and leaves its owner blank. And ʿan is the particle of going past: one asks about a thing, not asks the thing, so the question circles it and does not touch it. The line preserves the question's own shape and does not exchange it, and then answers from inside that same shape.
This is the fourth "say" in six consecutive verses. Before it came a command to say a request lifted upward, a command to say what has already happened, and a command to say that each works upon his own form and that the knowing of who is more guided lies with the Lord. This is the fourth, and the tightest of them in what it withholds. And read the first thing the answer does: it repeats the questioners' word exactly as they said it, with the article there and the article here. No other noun is set in its place, and it is not said "it is such and such." That alone rules over every explanation that comes after it. Whoever exchanges the word for another word has handed over what the line withheld, and the answer he is explaining refused that exchange in its first syllable. Even the letters give nothing that can be gripped. The root r-w-ḥ is a joined running that pierces and goes clear, and from it Arabic has rīḥ for moving air, rawāḥ for setting off at the end of the day, and rāḥa for the widening of the breath after a narrowing. A manner of going, not a thing to be set in a hand.
Min carries two faces here. It may draw a part, so that what was asked about is a part of His command; or it may mark a starting point, so that it comes forth from His command. Both faces are weighed and neither is settled. And they are not settled for two reasons. The first is that the line did not settle them. The second is that settling is itself an identification, and this line is built on withholding identification. The sūra has a precedent for this particle in its very first verse: ﴿لِنُرِيَهُ مِنْ آيَاتِنَا﴾, where the purpose is a part and not the whole. And amr is joined to "my Lord," and this noun occurs nowhere else in the whole sūra. Its root ʾ-m-r is a gathering that readies in its place and then runs on to its end, a binding word that goes out and travels beyond the one who spoke it. So look at where the answer landed and where it did not. It did not land in a kind under which the thing is classed, nor in a matter of which it is said to be made, nor in a function it is said to perform. It landed in a possessive. What was answered was a relation, and a relation says whose a thing is; it does not say what it is.
Count the persons in the line. Those who ask are plural: "they ask you." Those addressed at the end are plural: "you were given." Between them stands a single first person: "my Lord." It was not said "our Lord," which would take them in, nor "your Lord," which would turn toward them. The relation to which the answer is referred is stated in the line and not shared inside it. The one commanded to speak reports his own relation, and then reports their own measure.
The closing verb is passive: "you were given." And giving is giving. So the little in this line is granted, not withheld; had withholding been meant, it would have said "and you knew only a little." Nor is there any particle of rebuke in the line, no "why," no "will you not," no vocative of reproach. It is a report that states a quantity, and its reader stops at its being a quantity. And this min is the second in the line: of my Lord's command, and of the knowledge. Twice a thing is set as a portion of something wider. He was asked about a thing and answered by relating a part to a whole; then the askers were told that what they hold is a part of a whole. One shape at both ends. And the sūra says this same verb in the affirmative elsewhere: ﴿إِنَّ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ مِن قَبْلِهِ﴾. A giving affirmed there and measured here; one verb, and what differs is the amount it carried.
There is in this line no self, no mind, no substance called soul, no life force, no energy, no consciousness, and no angel named. Not one of these is in its letters or in its construction, and whoever supplies one has supplied what was not given. The question whose shape was preserved, the answer that repeated the word and did not exchange it, and the close that measured knowledge as little: three things in one line, all of them refusing an account that can be gripped. And this sūra has already forbidden it outright: ﴿وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ﴾, do not track what you have no knowledge of. The prohibition stands there and the measure stands here, and whoever joins them sees that identifying here is the tracking of what one has no knowledge of. And the line has a sister in the sūra that does what it does: ﴿وَلَٰكِن لَّا تَفْقَهُونَ تَسْبِيحَهُمْ﴾. A verse that reports a matter and then, in its own words, fixes the limit of the hearer's grasp of it. Here likewise: a report, and then a measuring of what the addressed were given of knowledge. A verse that states its own limit is not explained by anything that passes it.
A question is carried across and answered by a relation, not by a description. Whoever hands over a graspable account of it has refused the very answer he set out to explain.
Et cette sourate l'a déjà interdit sans détour : ﴿وَلَا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ﴾, ne piste pas ce dont tu n'as pas connaissance.
