Commentary
A second condition, and the first is still open. The wāw gathers without ordering, setting the two times on one thread and drawing the listener tighter still. Whoever was waiting for the answer after two verses is now waiting for it after four.
The build of the surah shows here: a time for what is above the head and a time for what is under the foot, each with its own acts, and both sealed by the same sentence. Two parties handled in one manner, and the verdict that comes down on one comes down on the other letter for letter.
Al-arḍ is from ʾ-r-ḍ: a base that breaks forth and runs out wide, then is drawn together with weight into a fixed place. In its root it is what loads rest on and what acts run across. It bears; it is not borne.
And here it comes in the nominative, ahead of its verb, as the sky came before it, and then the act falls on it while it owns nothing of it. The ground on which everything is laid is itself laid under a verb with no doer in sight. Whoever has carried loads all his life has a day coming in which he is carried.
M-d-d is the drawing out of what already stands, along its own direction, until it reaches its full extent. From it comes "he drew out the rope," lengthening it while keeping it joined, and madad, what is joined onto the first thing so as to keep it going. Drawing out presupposes a beginning already there; it originates nothing and turns nothing aside, it only brings what exists to the last of what is in it.
So the verse does not say the earth was destroyed. It says it was brought to its full reach. And what is spread to its limit keeps no fold and no crease in which anything can be tucked away. Full extension is an uncovering without a breaking.
And the verb is built for the object, so its doer is dropped, as it was dropped in "was held" before it. The surah names the dropped one in its own place two verses on: "and it gave ear to its Lord and was held to what was due of it." The name is held back and the trace is put first, and whoever saw the trace first knows whose it was when it is named.
A second condition joined before the first is closed, and the answer pushed five verses out. The bearer of every load is set under a verb whose doer is not shown, and the verb is a drawing-out and not an undoing: what is spread to its limit keeps no fold to hide anything in. The name behind it comes two verses later, in its own place.
Commentaire
وتُترجَمُ: «And when the earth is stretched out».
Two Readings
Common reading
Muddat is read as a spreading of the earth until it lies level, with neither mountain nor valley left in it, likened in the inherited reading to the stretching of a tanned hide, and said to be a widening so that it may hold all creatures on the day of gathering. It is given as part of the description of how the features of the earth are altered on the day of rising. Rendered: "And when the earth is stretched out."
A reading that describes the earth's shape after the stretching and explains the stretching by the room needed for a gathering.
A root-reading
Al-arḍ (ʾ-r-ḍ): a base that breaks forth and runs, then is drawn together with weight into a fixed place; it bears and is not borne, and here it is set ahead of its verb before the act falls on it. Muddat (m-d-d): the drawing out of what stands, along its own direction, until it reaches its full extent, so neither an originating from nothing nor an undoing, and what is spread to its limit keeps no fold or crease in which anything can be tucked away. Built for the object, it drops its doer, and the surah names him two verses on. Wa-idhā joins a second condition while the first is still open. The verse becomes: "and when the bearer is brought to the last of its reach."
A reading that hears in the stretching a reaching of full extent rather than a change of shape, and in the dropped doer a putting of the trace before the name.
The two readings do not conflict. The first describes the scene and gives its reason; the second reads the root and the build and stops where the verse stopped. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
In this surah the earth is not mentioned as a place but as an addressee. It is acted upon, then it acts, then it listens, then judgment falls on it, and that is an order resembling what happens to one who is held answerable rather than to a lifeless mass. The surah that calls the human being in its sixth verse prepares a likeness for him in its third: whoever bore is brought to his full reach.
Then the act chosen is not an act of undoing. A drawing-out keeps what it draws and brings it to its end, so there is no annihilation in the verse but an exhausting of the room a thing has. And whatever has its reach exhausted is wholly uncovered; nothing spread to its limit keeps a corner unseen.
And this joins what follows: it is drawn out and lies open, then it casts out what is in it and empties itself. Full extension is the opening move of full emptying, for what has no fold holds nothing back.
Perhaps an instance may be sought in what is observed of every holder in nature having a finite room: soil takes what it takes and then brings up what lay beneath it, a basin holds to a limit and then overflows, and whatever has reached its extent has nothing left to cover with. It may be that this points to something: that keeping and hiding are properties of the narrow and not of the wide. This is a conjecture offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse mentioned only an earth and a drawing-out, and gave the earth no shape, no composition, and no time.
