﴾ And so We made you a middle community, to be witnesses over the people, and the messenger will be a witness over you. We only set the direction you used to face to sort out who follows the messenger from who turns back on his heels. It is heavy, except for those God has guided. God would not let your trust go to waste. God is gentle and loving with people. ﴿
"And so", ka-dhālika, points back to what stood before it in the matter of the direction: just as the direction was stripped of being a badge of inherited belonging, so you were made a middle community. The verb is "We made", from j-ʿ-l, not from kh-l-q: khalq is a bringing into being out of nothing, and jaʿl is the turning of a thing that already is from one state into another. So the community was not raised as middle from its beginning; it was moved into that post by a decision at a particular moment, in the way the House was made a place of return and Abraham was made a guide for people in the verses just before. The difference matters: middleness is no inborn trait that comes with the body, it is a station held on the condition of its function. And the pattern shows itself here: a making that comes before the carrying of a task, and a task that demands the station of the making be kept.
The root ʾ-m-m in its nucleus: a hamza that affirms a presence, and a mīm that gathers and welds; and the root itself yields umm, the mother, imām, the one in front, and umma, the community: all of them centres to which whatever is around them is drawn in. And w-s-ṭ in its nucleus: a wāw that takes in and contains, a sīn that runs out finely, then a ṭāʾ that firms the enclosing and widens it. So wasaṭ is, letter for letter, a point that takes in what surrounds it from every side. To say "a middle community" is therefore an emphatic doubling of the sense of centre, not a mixture squeezed between two jaws: the middle here is not the mean struck between two excesses; it is the point that is seen from every side and sees every side. And out of the position of seeing, the position of witnessing is born.
"To be witnesses over the people, and the messenger will be a witness over you": the particle "over" in both places carries height and enclosure, not neighbourliness. Witnessing here is not being present at an event; it is standing at a higher post from which sight can gather the whole and judge. And out of sh-h-d testimony comes with its two faces: an appearing that fills the space, sh and h, that then settles and extends, d. The threefold build of testimony is completed here: the community over the people, the messenger over the community, and God over all of it. Each layer draws the standing of its testimony from the layer above it, and so the testimony of whoever is cut off from his messenger falls, and the message of whoever is cut off from his Lord falls.
"We only set the direction you used to face to sort out who follows the messenger from who turns back on his heels": the restriction in "only" reports that the first direction was no cancelled draft but an instrument of sorting, meant as such from the beginning. And ʿ-l-m, said of God, does not mean the discovery of something not yet known, for the divine knowing is prior and encompassing; it means the bringing out of what is known in the unseen onto the stage of the seen, so that the reckoning may stand on what can be handled. What "so that We may know" carries here is that whatever lay covered inside the chests turns into conduct that can be looked at, and the conduct parts the follower from the one who backs away. The first direction was not a mistake put right; it was a hinge set there in order to open.
The verse sets "who follows the messenger" against "who turns back on his heels", and the facing of the two roots is exact. t-b-ʿ is a walking behind a guide in the guide's own direction, while q-l-b together with "his heels" draws a going backwards with the whole body swung round. The matter is not a sitting down and not a slowing; it is a full turn towards what was left behind. And "his heels" is a dual, pointing at the undersides of the feet, the place that presses on ground already walked, so the one who backs away on his heels returns to the place of the old track and not to what is opening in front of him. Turning the direction, read this way, is no random test but a test with a logic in it: whoever stood on the first direction because of what he was used to went back to it on his feet, and whoever stood on it for God walked on with the turning of the command.
The prayers made towards the first direction before the turning were not voided, and the trust that went with them did not go. "God would not let go to waste" comes as a denial stiffened by the lām: it does not happen, and it does not befit Him. So the turning does not confiscate what came before it; it rests on it. And the close of the verse, "God is gentle and loving with people", joins r-ʾ-f to r-ḥ-m in a chosen order: raʾfa at root is a kindness that arrives before the need and lifts before the hurt lands, and raḥma is an answer that comes after the need. Since the turning of the direction lay heavy on souls attached to what they were used to, the name of gentleness was put first, to say that the lightening came before the complaint.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: middleness inside the word is a centre that is seen from and on which the witnessing stands, not a brittle mean between two extremes. Whoever stood in it as a witness followed, and whoever read it as an inherited belonging turned back on his heels.
The kāf of likening in ﴿وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ﴾ points back to the stripping of the direction of prayer of any inherited belonging, so the making of the community as middle arrives as the fruit of that severance and not as an independent beginning. The verb j-ʿ-l and not kh-l-q is exact: middleness is no inborn trait but a station held on the condition of its function. The gathering in ʾ-m-m gives a point that draws in what is around it, and w-s-ṭ in its nucleus is an extended enclosing that takes in every side, so "a middle community" doubles the sense of centre; it is not a halfway settlement between two parties. The particle "over" in ﴿شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ﴾ carries height and enclosure and not neighbourliness, so witnessing is a higher post and not a presence at the side, and the build runs in tiers: the community over the people and the messenger over the community. Then the Book states outright what the turning of the direction uncovers, ﴿إِلَّا لِنَعْلَمَ مَن يَتَّبِعُ الرَّسُولَ مِمَّن يَنقَلِبُ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ﴾, and God's knowing here is the bringing out of what is known in the unseen onto the stage of the seen, not a discovery. The facing of t-b-ʿ with q-l-b and the heels is the heart of it: following is a walk behind a guide and forward, and turning on the heels is a full swing round to what was left behind the feet. And the close of the verse, ﴿وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيُضِيعَ إِيمَانَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِالنَّاسِ لَرَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ﴾, puts gentleness before mercy, because r-ʾ-f is a kindness that comes before the need and lifts before the hurt: whoever found the turning heavy was reached by the care before he complained.
