﴾ And with the right We sent it down, and with the right it came down. And We sent you only as one who announces and one who warns. ﴿
The preposition and its noun stand in front of the verb in both halves, and fronting of this kind draws the attention onto what is fronted and fixes the ruling there. And the bāʾ is the bāʾ of accompaniment. It does not say "for the right We sent it down", which would set the right up as an aim to be reached afterward, nor "from the right", which would make it a source departed from and left behind. The right keeps company with the descending itself: it comes down along with it, neither before it nor behind it. Ḥ-q-q is a fastened fixity that cannot be shifted, and from it comes the saying that a thing has fallen due on a man so that he has no way to push it off. What accompanies this descent is therefore not merely truthfulness in a report; it is something that will not be moved from its place.
The root is one across both halves and the form changes. The first is the fourth form with a doer and an object: One who sends down, and a pronoun going back to what is sent. The second is the first form, intransitive, with nothing beside it but itself. So the first half looks toward the side of the sending and the second toward the side of the arriving, and what clung to it in the one clings to it in the other, in the same letter.
Now look at what stands between the two ends. Not a word, not a condition, not an adverb. It does not say "then it came down", which would slacken the join, nor "and it had come down", which would begin afresh. A bāʾ at the issuing and a bāʾ at the arriving, and no place between them for anything to enter. N-z-l is a dense arrival that ends at one definite site and holds to it, not a stray falling with no destination, so the root itself carries a starting point and a landing, and the two forms have divided those two ends between them.
Then mā negates and illā excepts, which is restriction: every state is emptied out and two are left standing. And this same opening has already run in this Surah, ﴿وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَكِيلًا﴾. There one description is denied and nothing is excepted; here everything is denied and two descriptions are excepted. One opening doing opposite work in two places.
R-s-l is a setting-forth from a source that does not halt until it joins the one it is going to, and from the same root comes the phrase used for a gentle, unhurried gait. So sending, in its own letters, is a continuous going that is not rushed, and that letter comes back in the verse after this one.
"One who announces" is on the second form. B-sh-r is an appearing that runs finely along the surface, and from it comes the outer skin, which publishes what is inside. So an announcement is news measured by its trace on a face before it is measured by its wording. And this very verb has already been attributed in this Surah to the thing sent down rather than to the one sent with it, ﴿وَيُبَشِّرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ﴾: one work ascribed once to what descended and once to the one who carries it.
"One who warns" is on the pattern faʿīl, not on the pattern of the first. N-dh-r is a sharp driving-out that runs on until it reaches the one warned, and warning is a delivery before the event, not a report after it. So the two states are not cast in one form, and the wāw between them joins without ordering. Both of the two are a conveying. The restriction leaves two states in the account, and leaves no outcome in the hand.
One preposition heads both ends of a descent, and one root splits into a sending and an arriving with nothing set between them. Then a sentence that once struck out a role restricts the same man to two, and both of the two are a carrying of news.
Or cette même ouverture a déjà couru dans cette sourate, ﴿وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَكِيلًا﴾.
