﴾ And keep your guard toward a day in which you will be returned to God; then every soul will be paid in full what it earned, and they will not be wronged. ﴿
The verb "keep your guard" is not followed here by "God", as it was in 278, but by "a day". The choice is rare. Guarding toward God makes a person guard himself at every moment; guarding toward the day makes him guard one appointed day, the day of the reckoning. The rhetorical shift is deliberate: the close turns the shielding toward a single determined moment. Nothing stands in need of shielding like that day, because after it no second chance for correction comes.
The verb "you will be returned" is built on the passive. This is more exact than "you return", because a person does not go back to God by his own choosing, he is brought back to Him. The passive drops the agent out of magnification: God is the one who returns them, and the naming of Him in a detailed construction is not what is wanted. The difference between "he returns" and "he is returned" fixes the difference between the illusion of human independence and the truth of his dependence: the return does not rest on his will, it falls upon him.
The verb "will be paid in full" is from w-f-y, the discharging of a right entire, with no shortfall and no excess. It came before in 272, in the setting of whatever good you spend being fully repaid to you. The return of this verb here, in the setting of the total reckoning, confirms that the logic of the divine scales is one: what you paid out comes back to you whole, and what you earned you are owed whole. This root structure denies any favour: no one is given more than his work, and no one falls short of his work.
The verb "earned" is fastened to "every soul". The individual fastening fixes the reckoning as personal and not collective. And k-s-b is the getting of a thing by effort until it clings to the one who got it. Everything a person has come by through his own effort, small or great, has its recompense paid in full. And the pointing to "earning" rather than to "working" is exact: earning takes in the financial gain as well, so the direction is plainly toward the setting of ribā. The wealth the usurer earned will be reckoned upon him; he cannot leave it standing at the door.
"Every soul" is a decisive formula: each individual is reckoned with alone. There is no collective reckoning inside which a person hides behind his tribe or his class or his state. And the soul is the living, perceiving self. This individual from whom there is no hiding is the very individual the usurer wanted to disappear into, away from the responsibility for his theft. In this world he managed it; in the hereafter he does not.
"And they will not be wronged" is a direct echo of "you do no wrong, and you are not wronged" in 279. As though the verse brings back into memory the worldly principle on which the legislative cycle was built, and draws it out to the last day. Divine justice in this world is a rule; in the hereafter it is a guarantee. The repetition announces that "you do no wrong, and you are not wronged" in the matter of ribā is not merely a legal ruling, it is the extension of a great divine law running through this world and the next.
The Quranic arc opens in al-Fātiḥa with "Holder of the Day when every obligation is called due", and shuts, at the end of al-Baqara's passage on ribā, with "a day in which you will be returned to God". So the Quranic cord seals itself with the day of the reckoning as it opened with it. And ribā, in this place, is a legislative field closed shortly before the end of the sūra, so that the economic ruling and the mention of the last day gather in a single ayah.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the role of "the day of the return, in which the worth of every economic gain is uncovered as it truly is" precedes the role of "the worldly accounting that can be deceived by the visible operations and so praise the usurer and blame the giver", and the role of "the paying in full to every soul of what it earned" precedes the role of "the collective reckoning that spreads the responsibility until it is lost".
The cycle of ribā closes inside a frame of the hereafter, so that the speech on ribā ends on the last day, on justice and on recompense. The command to guard does not attach here to God, as it did in 278, but to "a day": the guarding of one determined moment after which no chance comes round again. "You will be returned", from r-j-ʿ, in the passive: a person does not go back by his own choosing, he is brought back, and that uncovers the ending of the independence he imagined for himself in this world. Then the paying in full, from w-f-y, to every soul, from n-f-s, of what it earned, from k-s-b. "Earned" and not "worked": it takes in the financial gain that was the subject of the whole cycle, so the usurer finds his wealth in the scale as well. "They will not be wronged", from ẓ-l-m: an absolute justice running both ways, with no shortfall and no addition. Whoever spent finds what he spent, and whoever took beyond his right is reckoned with for what he took.
