﴾ Those who say: our Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), we have made trust secure, so cover our wrongs for us and guard us from the torment of the Fire. ﴿
"Those who" ties this verse to the one before it: the people of the gardens and the acceptance are now disclosed from inside their own speech. Qawl, from q-w-l, is a cutting release that extends and stays attached to its source, so that a word leaves its speaker as a thread binding him to what he uttered. The prayer that follows is therefore the place where the direction of the heart shows itself, not an ornament laid over the qualities.
The first thing they say is "our Rabb." The possessive joins them to the One who tends them and brings their growth forward. They call from the position of one who knows that his own completion does not stand up by itself, not from a position of needing nothing.
The doubled emphasis and the repeated "we" fix the acknowledgment: "we have made trust secure." Īmān, from ʾ-m-n, is the confirming of a gathering out of which security emerges. The verb stands in the past, so they acknowledge that they entered into the making of security and trust. The sentence does not stop at that acknowledgment.
The connective arrives at once: "so cover our wrongs for us." Trust, rather than turning into a claim of completeness, opens the door of asking for covering and repair. What they made of security leaves them better able to see what stands in need of covering, not better able to deny it.
Ghufrān, from gh-f-r, is a covering depth that penetrates and then keeps flowing: a covering that reaches the site of the flaw and shields it from staying exposed and in command. The preposition in "for us" makes the covering a gift returning upon them, not a bare erasure standing on its own.
Dhunūb, from dh-n-b, is a sharp penetration that emerges and then clings like a tail trailing an act. A wrong is a moment that passes, and it is also an effect that follows the one who made it. They ask that the covering reach these trailing effects, so that the effects no longer keep hold of the course they walk.
"Guard us" comes from the very root that appeared in "kept guard" in the verse before: w-q-y. There they took up a protection; here they ask their Rabb to join them to a protection they do not hold on their own. Guarding is at once a work they perform and a gift they lack, both together.
ʿAdhāb, from ʿ-dh-b, is an appearance rising from depth that penetrates sharply and then stays attached. Joined to the Fire, it makes the prayer a request that the outcome be guarded, the outcome the wrongs arrive at if their effects remain. So the speech reaches from a past, "we have made trust secure," through a present that asks for covering, to a future that asks for protection.
The verse listens to the prayer of the people of the promise instead of naming them with a fixed label: an acknowledgment of the security they made, then a request that the effects of their acts be covered, then a request that their outcome be kept. Trust inside the speech does not cancel the wrong, and covering does not cancel the guarding. Between "kept guard" and "guard us" stands the whole equation of servanthood, in which the heart takes up its own protection and knows that complete protection is granted by its Rabb.
