﴾ The one who whispers in the chests of mankind. ﴿
"The one who whispers in the chests of mankind" is a relative clause that comes after two namings, al-waswās al-khannās, to add to the definition. As though it were said: do not suppose that the one whose name is al-waswās is anything other than "the one who whispers in the chests." And do not suppose that the whisperer performs any act other than casting his voice into this place in particular. The Surah closes every loophole through which an ambiguity would enter upon the reader.
And in the return of the root from the preceding verse, al-waswās and then yuwaswisu, there is an indication of the fixity of the act: the one who has been named by the attribute of repetition does what his name carries. Do not expect anything else of him. A number of whisperings come to the reader as though they were pieces of reasoning, and he does not notice that they are whispering of one single kind. The Surah makes it firm: "the one who whispers," not "the one who puts forward an argument," not "the one who reminds," not "the one who analyses." The name of the act is the act.
The Qur'an uses exact words for the inner organs, and does not mix them. The qalb, the heart, is in the Qur'an the place of faith, of the binding and of the settling into calm (﴿أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ﴾). The nafs is the place of the will, of the choice and of the leaning. The lubb is the place of the kernel drawn clear. As for the ṣadr, the chest, it is the widest space, the one in which the stirrings arise before they have taken a shape: a narrowness or a breadth, a blaze or a stillness, a doubt or a certainty.
And the one who whispers chooses this place in particular because it is a layer beneath the intellect. Before the thought is a position to be disputed, it is a narrowness rising. Before the hatred is a decision, it is a leaning gathering. The whisperer sows in this soil that has not yet taken form. Had he entered the intellect directly, the reader would have met him with the argument. But he enters the chest, where there is no argument yet.
And al-Baqara uncovers the same site from another angle: ﴿فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا﴾. The heart here produces what gathers in the chest. And the sickness passes from the heart to the chest, and from the chest to the conduct. The whisperer, at the close of the Book, works in the space al-Baqara described at the opening of it: what arises there runs through all the rest.
The chest, in the Qur'an, comes with two opposite words: al-sharḥ and al-ḍīq. Sharaḥa ṣadrah: he widened it and opened it. Ḍāqa ṣadruh: it narrowed and closed. The whispering works at the narrowing: every time it sows a troubled thought in the chest, the place grows tight, and its tightness produces other thoughts. A ring turning upon itself.
And the reader who understands this does not treat the thoughts one by one; he treats the place. He asks for the widening of the chest through remembrance (dhikr), and the ground on which the whispering moves grows wide, so that it finds in it no spot where it can gather. And so the first thing Mūsā asked of his Lord when he was sent was ﴿رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي﴾, "My Lord, widen for me my chest." Before every task outside, this widening within. And the place the whispering enters is the place that asks to be widened.
The word "mankind" returns five times in the Surah, and this is its fourth coming: "the chests of mankind." The place described here does not belong to one group of people to the exclusion of another. The whispering does not, at the outset, distinguish between a heart that guards itself and another heart; every human chest is an open field for this kind of thought. The difference is not in the existence of the whispering, but in the manner of receiving it.
And this lifts from the reader the guilt of the whispering itself. Its falling upon you is not a fault; its function is to enter "the chests of mankind." The fault begins when a human being receives it and opens for it the door of the nafs, and then the door of the act. The whispering in the chest is a thought that recedes at remembrance; it becomes a fault only if it passes from the chest to what lies beyond it. The first of shelters is that the reader should know these limits.
The preceding verse named the enemy; this one fixes with exactness the place of his work: not in the hands, not in the tongues, not in the eyes, but in "the chests." And the chest, in its root ṣ-d-r, is what puts itself in front, what comes first: the place from which the stirrings and the intentions set out before they settle upon a shape. The Qur'an distinguishes its inner organs with exactness: the qalb is the seat of the binding and of the settling into calm, the nafs is the place of the will and of the leaning, the ʿaql is the place of the argument, and the ṣadr is the widest space in which all of these arise before they take up a position. The whisperer chooses this space in particular because it is a layer beneath the argument: when the whispering reaches the level of the thought it has already covered most of the road, and the intellect can dispute with it; but in the chest there is no argument yet, only a narrowness, a leaning, a hatred gathering. And so the thought is not treated one by one, but the place itself is treated: sharḥ al-ṣadr, the widening of the chest, which Mūsā asked for as soon as he was sent ﴿رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي﴾. And the verse, together with its fixing of the place, carries a hidden mercy: it says "the chests of mankind," that is, every human chest without exception. The coming of the thought is therefore neither a fault nor a sign of weakness; its own function is to enter, and the reader's function is to know what makes it recede. The fault begins when the thought passes from the chest to the nafs, and then to the act, and not before. The first of shelters is that the reader should know these limits.
