﴾ So he denied, and he stiffened against being led. ﴿
The fa here marks a sequence with no interval in it: the sign was set down in the verse before, and the answer comes pressed up against it. The verse that follows this one will open a gap with thumma, "then he turned his back, straining onward"; in this place there is no gap.
K-dh-b denotes the putting out of an outside that does not match what was kept within. The root does not say that the man was mistaken; it says that there is a parting between what he showed and what he held, and the word describes a distance inside the man himself.
The verb comes in the doubled form, and the doubling makes the act repeated and pursued, a denial kept up rather than a word said once and forgotten. It comes, moreover, with no object, so what was denied is not named, though it stands in the verse just above; what is denied is known by its position rather than by a name.
A wāw joins the verbs here, not a fa, and the two stand together rather than in sequence: one state said in two words, not one stage following another.
ʿ-ṣ-y denotes an emerging out of a depth that then clamps down hard, holding its own direction without being turned from it. The Arabic istaʿṣā al-amr is said of a thing that hardened so that it would not yield to whoever worked at it. The word carries no wavering and no hanging back, only a hardness that keeps its bearing, which agrees with what was said of him earlier: a man who has gone past his limit is not brought back to it by an offer laid before him.
This verb too comes with no object. In ordinary speech one says ʿaṣā amrahu, he disobeyed his order, but that is not said here; there are two verbs in one verse, and for neither of them is the thing they fell upon named.
The offer came in two verses under a single question, one half something he does himself upon himself, one half something done to him by another. The answer comes in two words, and two are set against two.
With "he has overreached" in the seventeenth verse, three completed verbs now describe the man, and not one of them is given a stated object. He is described by what stands in him, not by what he did to anyone.
One verse earlier it was said that the sign was shown to him, and r-ʾ-y is a light touch out of which a perception bursts and extends. The showing reached the eye, and what reaches the eye has no power to reach the heart.
Two words answer two verses of offer and one verse of showing. The fa presses the answer against the sign with no interval, while the verse that follows this one will open an interval with thumma, so the two particles differ in their two places. Kadhdhaba, from k-dh-b, is the putting out of an outside that does not match what was kept within; the word describes a parting inside the man and not a mistake in his looking, and it is in the doubled form, so the act is pursued and not done once. ʿAṣā is joined by wāw and not by fa, which makes the two one state in two words, and ʿ-ṣ-y is a hard, fixed going-out that holds its own bearing and is not turned from it. Neither verb has a stated object, just as "he has overreached" came before them with none, and the three verbs describe the man by what stands in him. The sign was set within reach of his eye, and showing, in its root, is a light touch. The largest thing that can be seen reaches the eye and has no power to reach what lies behind it.
