﴾ Whoever obeys the messenger has thereby obeyed Allah; whoever turns away, We have not sent you over them as a keeper (ḥafīẓ). ﴿
The verse opens with a condition that covers everyone who acts, "whoever obeys the messenger", and makes its answer "has thereby obeyed Allah". It names the one obeyed by his work, al-rasūl, "the messenger", and a rasūl, from r-s-l, is one sent out from one side with what he carries until he brings it to another side; the same root came in the verse before: ﴿وَأَرْسَلْنَاكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُولًا﴾, "We have sent you to people as a messenger." Yielding to the messenger is yielding to what he carries, and what he carries came from the presence of the one who sent him; that is why the answer ends on the name of Allah.
The verb of the condition is in the imperfect, yuṭiʿ, and the answer is in the perfect, preceded by qad: fa-qad aṭāʿa llāh, "has thereby obeyed Allah". What hangs on the condition is stated in the answer as a thing already accomplished, as though obedience to Allah takes place in the very act by which a person yields to the messenger, with no stretch of time and no second act between them. Obedience, ṭāʿa, is from ṭ-w-ʿ, and ṭawʿ is the opposite of compulsion (kurh): the one who obeys softens toward the command and goes along with it willingly on the path opened for him. Here that path is the messenger's path, and it is opened from the presence of Allah.
Obedience has already appeared in this Surah in other forms: ﴿وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ﴾, "whoever obeys Allah and His messenger", in the thirteenth verse; ﴿أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ﴾, "obey Allah and obey the messenger", in the fifty-ninth; ﴿وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ﴾, "whoever obeys Allah and the messenger", in the sixty-ninth; and between the last two came the statement that a messenger is sent to be obeyed: ﴿وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ﴾, "We have not sent any messenger except to be obeyed, by the leave of Allah." There the two names were joined one to the other under a single verb, or each had a verb of its own. This verse lays the verb on the messenger alone in the condition and then brings out the name of Allah in the answer, so that the two obediences become one act called by two names.
Then comes the opposite condition: "whoever turns away". Tawallā is from w-l-y, a root that turns on one thing coming next to another and joining it with no gap: one says waliyahu of one who comes right after another, and wallāhu ẓahrahu, "he turned his back to him", of one who makes his back the side that lies next to the other. The one who turns away wheels round until his nape is what lies next to the side he had been facing, the movement opposite to the obedience that goes along with the command on its path. The two conditions stand facing each other in one verse: one yields and walks with the messenger, the other wheels round and gives his back.
The answer to this condition turns from the one who turns away to the one addressed: "We have not sent you over them as a keeper." The pronoun in "over them" is plural and goes back to man, "whoever", which is singular in form and general in meaning, so the answer widens to take in everyone who turns away. Ḥafīẓ, "keeper", is from ḥ-f-ẓ: one who surrounds a thing and closes over it so that nothing of it is lost; one says ḥafiẓa al-matāʿ of one who gathered in his goods and kept them safe. A keeper "over them" is one whose surrounding comes from above them, who holds them so that none of them slips from his hand, and it is this surrounding that the verse removes from the sending of the one addressed.
The verb echoes the verse before, which said ﴿وَأَرْسَلْنَاكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُولًا﴾, "We have sent you to people as a messenger", while this one says "We have not sent you over them as a keeper". The verb is the same; what has changed is what stands around it: there a lām makes the sending for people, with "as a messenger" beside it; here ʿalā places it over them, with "as a keeper" beside it, negated. The sending is directed to people, with what is carried to them, and a surrounding that stands over them lies outside it. The same wording comes in Sūrat al-Shūrā as the answer to a turning aside, ﴿فَإِنْ أَعْرَضُوا فَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًا ۖ إِنْ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا الْبَلَاغُ﴾, "if they turn aside, We have not sent you over them as a keeper; on you is only the conveying", and these two places are the only ones in the Book where it occurs.
The verse makes obedience to the messenger, from ṭ-w-ʿ, obedience to Allah itself, and states it in the answer as a thing accomplished, with qad: the messenger, from r-s-l, carries what came from the presence of the one who sent him, and yielding to what he carries is yielding to the sender, so the two obediences that came joined, or each with its own verb, in the earlier verses meet here in a single act. It then sets over against it the turning away, from w-l-y, which puts the back where the face was, and turns the answer to what the one addressed was sent with: he was sent to people as a messenger, and he was not sent over them as a keeper, the keeper, from ḥ-f-ẓ, being one who surrounds a thing and closes over it so that nothing of it is lost.
L'obéissance a déjà paru dans cette sourate sous d'autres formes : ﴿وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ﴾, « quiconque obéit à Allāh et à Son messager », au treizième verset ; ﴿أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ﴾, « obéissez à Allāh et obéissez au messager », au cinquante-neuvième ; ﴿وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ﴾, « quiconque obéit à Allāh et au messager », au soixante-neuvième ; et entre les deux derniers est venue la parole selon laquelle un messager est envoyé pour être obéi : ﴿وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ﴾, « Nous n'avons envoyé aucun messager que pour qu'il soit obéi, par la permission d'Allāh ».
