Commentary
This verse moves from the plural in "reaches them" (tuṣibhum) to the singular in "reaches you" (aṣābaka). The "you" here is the one to whom it was said "from your presence", who was commanded "say", and who is addressed at the end of this verse in "We have sent you". What was related of them as a group in the previous verse is now spoken as a rule to one, the very one they made the outlet of the bad thing. A general rule addressed to a single "you" reaches everyone who hears it, each in himself, so the verse carries both faces: that the one addressed is the messenger whom it names at its end, or that it is every hearer taken one by one; it leaves this open.
The verb changes as the one addressed changes: "if it reaches them" in the previous verse relates a saying renewed whenever something happens, and "whatever reaches you" here, with a past verb and the all-embracing mā, takes in every reaching, so the rule falls on what has reached and what will reach. Min in "of good" (min ḥasanatin) and "of bad" (min sayyiʾatin) makes plain the kind of what reached, so the rule takes in everything of this kind or of that. Reaching, iṣāba, is from ṣ-w-b: what is pressed in and then released so that it pours down on its place, and the place it pours down on in the verse is the one addressed himself.
In the previous verse ʿinda, "presence", came in every ascribing: "from Allah's presence", "from your presence", "all of it is from Allah's presence". In this verse ʿinda falls away and min, "from", remains alone: "is from Allah" (fa-mina llāh), "is from your own self" (fa-min nafsika). ʿInda names the side in which a thing is held and from which it comes out, and min alone names the starting point from which it begins. The previous verse answers people who divided what reaches them between two sides, and makes all of it "from Allah's presence"; this verse names for the one addressed the starting point of what reached him: the good thing from Allah, the bad thing from his own self. The Book also joins ʿinda to the selves: of a blow that struck a people it says ﴿قُلْ هُوَ مِنْ عِندِ أَنفُسِكُمْ﴾, "say: it is from the presence of your own selves", so the change of word does not by itself divide a side that belongs to Allah alone from a starting point in the self; the difference between the two verses lies in their setting: an answer to people who laid the bad thing on another, and a rule spoken to one addressed.
Nafs, the self, is from n-f-s: the living self whose inside holds what is in it and then lets it out, as it was read at the opening of the Surah, and its attachment to "you" in "your own self" gives every one addressed an inside that is the starting point of what harms him. The two clauses are built on a single mould, "whatever reaches you of ... is from ...", and part in two places, the kind of what reached, "good" and "bad", and its starting point at their end, so the name "Allah" stands facing "your own self": the good thing has its starting point above the one it reaches, and the bad thing has its starting point in him.
The two verses stand side by side with their two statements: everything that reaches is from Allah's presence, and whatever bad has reached the one addressed is from his own self; their saying "from your presence" falls by the answer of the previous verse, "all of it is from Allah's presence". The Surah has already shown how the reaching comes back on its owner, in the sixty-second verse: ﴿أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ﴾, "a blow strikes them for what their hands have sent ahead", so what the hands send ahead comes back on their owners as a blow, set down there under idhā, "when", as what comes to pass. The verb "to reach" (aṣāba) comes in the Surah in this passage alone: in the sixty-second verse, then in the seventy-second and the seventy-third, a blow that reaches and a bounty from Allah that reaches, then in this verse and the one before it, so the passage runs the verb between what pleases and what harms.
The address then names the work of the one addressed: "We have sent you to people as a messenger." Sending, irsāl, is from r-s-l: letting a thing go so that it runs along a connected course until it reaches the one it was meant for, and "as a messenger" (rasūlan) brings the root back as a noun after the verb, fixing on the one addressed the quality of what was done with him. His work in the verse is to reach people with what he was sent with, and with this what they ascribed to him in the previous verse is cut off: the one sent is sent to them with speech, and the good and the bad reach them from a side other than his. The lām in "to people" (li-l-nāsi) turns the sending toward them.
Then "and Allah suffices as a witness". A witness, shahīd, from sh-h-d, is one who was present so that what he saw became fixed with him, and "suffices" (kafā), from k-f-y, is a closing of need so that nothing else is sought with it; the bāʾ in bi-llāhi enters on the one who suffices, so Allah is the one who suffices as witness. The witnessing in the verse is left unbounded, and the nearest things it falls on are what was named before it: the sending of the one addressed, and what reaches people and what they say about it; whoever has Allah as his witness needs no other. This close suits a setting in which a claim has been raised against the messenger, and a claim calls for a witness.
The verse moves from a group that divides what reaches it between two sides to one addressed as "you", and tells him a rule for everything that reaches, from ṣ-w-b: the good thing, from ḥ-s-n, has Allah as its starting point, and the bad thing, from s-w-ʾ, has the self, from n-f-s, as its starting point. The ʿinda that carried the dispute of the previous verse has fallen away: that verse answers people who divided what reaches them and makes all of it "from Allah's presence", this one is a rule for the one addressed about what reached him, and by the answer of the former the bad thing is left no outlet in the messenger's presence. The verse then names the work of the one addressed, a messenger, from r-s-l, sent to people to reach them with what he carries, and closes on a witness who suffices, from sh-h-d, who witnesses the sending and what is said about it.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read with the address directed to the Prophet and meant for every human being, and it is joined to the previous verse in this way: the good thing and the bad thing are both from Allah in that He creates and brings them about, and the bad thing is "from your own self" in that it comes because of one's own dhanb (the fault that trails); in support they cite ﴿وَمَا أَصَابَكُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ﴾, "whatever blow strikes you is for what your hands have earned", so the good thing is a bounty from Allah and the bad thing a requital for deeds. Some read the verse as a question whose hamza has been dropped: "is it then from your own self?". "We have sent you to people as a messenger" is taken to mean that his message is for all people, and "Allah suffices as a witness" as a witnessing to his being sent.
A reading that reconciles the two verses by separating creation from cause, and makes the message one for all people.
A root-reading
Aṣābaka (root ṣ-w-b): what is pressed in and then pours down on its place and reaches it. Ḥasana (root ḥ-s-n): what comes out pure and falls gently on the self. Sayyiʾa (root s-w-ʾ): what seeps in, closes down on its owner and cuts off his soundness. Nafsika (root n-f-s): a living inside out of which what is in it comes. Rasūlan (root r-s-l): one let go, running with speech until he reaches the one it was meant for. Shahīdan (root sh-h-d): one who was present so that what he saw became fixed with him. The verse becomes: "Whatever pleasing thing has poured down on you has Allah as its starting point, and whatever harmful thing has poured down on you has as its starting point your own inside, out of which what is in you comes; We have let you go to people with speech to deliver, and Allah suffices as one present who witnesses."
A reading that hears in the verse a single pouring down whose starting point differs: a good thing from Allah, a bad thing from the self of the one it reaches.
The two readings do not conflict. The first reconciles the two verses through creation and cause; the second hears the difference in the wording itself: "from the presence of" in the previous verse, and "from" alone in this one. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Reaching, from ṣ-w-b, is what is pressed in and then pours down on its place and arrives there; a good thing, from ḥ-s-n, is what comes out pure and falls gently on the self; a bad thing, from s-w-ʾ, is what seeps in, closes down on its owner and cuts off his soundness; and the self, from n-f-s, is a living inside out of which what is in it comes. The letters set the bad thing and the self in a single movement: something that comes out of an inside and then returns to pour down on its owner, while the good thing comes down from above him and falls on him gently.
Second: the scene
After the speakers have divided what reaches them between Allah's presence and the messenger's presence, and after the two parts have been gathered in "all of it is from Allah's presence", the address turns to one who is spoken to as "you": whatever good reaches him is from Allah, and whatever bad reaches him is from his own self. His work is then named, a messenger sent to people, and the scene closes on a witness who suffices.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
Among people it recurs that they ascribe what pleases them to themselves or to what they honor, and ascribe what harms them to others, and the Book gives this on the lips of another people: ﴿فَإِذَا جَاءَتْهُمُ الْحَسَنَةُ قَالُوا لَنَا هَٰذِهِ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ يَطَّيَّرُوا بِمُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُ﴾, "when the good thing came to them they said, this is ours, and if a bad thing reached them they took an ill omen from Moses and those with him". The verse turns this direction round at both ends: the good thing is sent back to Allah, so a person does not take it for himself, and the bad thing is sent back to the self, so he does not throw it on another. It is a pattern that serves every community: that a person begin the reckoning of what harms him with himself before looking for someone to load it on.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
This may correspond to what social psychology calls the self-serving attributional bias: the tendency of a person to ascribe his success to himself, to his ability and effort, and his failure to circumstances outside him or to others. In 2004 Mezulis and colleagues gathered the results of two hundred and sixty-six studies in a meta-analysis, and found the bias large and widespread across the ages and cultures studied, smaller in some Asian samples, and weaker among people with depression or anxiety.
The verse sets for attribution a division reversed at both ends: what pleases is ascribed to what is above the self, to Allah, and what harms is ascribed to within the self. Perhaps there is in this reversal a remedy for the tendency the research describes: the good thing sent back to Allah checks its owner's pride, and the bad thing sent back to the self turns him away from looking for a culprit outside himself. Perhaps, too, the previous verse keeps this from becoming self-punishment: the starting point is in the self, and the side from which everything comes out is with Allah.
Il se répète parmi les gens qu'ils attribuent ce qui leur plaît à eux-mêmes ou à ce qu'ils honorent, et ce qui leur nuit à d'autres, et le Livre le donne sur les lèvres d'un autre peuple : ﴿فَإِذَا جَاءَتْهُمُ الْحَسَنَةُ قَالُوا لَنَا هَٰذِهِ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ يَطَّيَّرُوا بِمُوسَىٰ وَمَن مَّعَهُ﴾, « quand le bien leur venait, ils disaient : ceci nous revient, et si un mal les atteignait, ils en tiraient mauvais présage à cause de Moïse et de ceux qui étaient avec lui ».
