﴾ They say, 'Obedience!' Then, when they have gone out from your presence, a party of them settles by night something other than what you say. Allah writes down what they settle by night. So turn aside from them and rely on Allah; Allah suffices as a trustee (wakīl). ﴿
The verse opens with what some people say with their tongues: "They say, 'Obedience!'" Ṭāʿatun is in the nominative as the predicate of an omitted subject, understood as "our part is obedience", so what they say is a single noun standing for the whole sentence, and it declares a settled state more than it promises a deed to come. The word is from ṭ-w-ʿ, the root with which the previous verse opened, "whoever obeys the messenger": after that verse made obedience to the messenger obedience to Allah, this one gives the name of obedience as it runs on the tongues of some people. The verb yaqūlūna is in the imperfect and speaks of a saying repeated whenever they are present; its pronoun refers to absent people whom the verse describes first by their saying, and then by what some of them do once they have gone out.
Then fa-idhā comes with a verb in the perfect, "when they have gone out from your presence", and idhā with the perfect sets what comes about each time its condition is met, so the verse describes what happens every time they go out. Barazū is from b-r-z: al-barāz is the open expanse that hides nothing in it, and baraza al-shayʾ is said of a thing that comes out of its cover to where it is seen. "From your presence" makes the presence of the one addressed the place they come out of: being with him was the place of saying "Obedience!", and going out from him is the first step toward something else.
The answer to idhā is bayyata ṭāʾifatun minhum, "a party of them settles by night". Tabyīt is from b-y-t: the bayt is the shelter in which its owner is cut off from the outside and stays the night, and bāta is said of a man whom the night overtakes and who stays in it. Bayyata, on the pattern faʿʿala, carries the verb over to the matter itself, so that bayyata al-amr is to settle a matter by night, turning it over under the cover of night until it is fixed; this Surah also has ﴿إِذْ يُبَيِّتُونَ مَا لَا يَرْضَىٰ مِنَ الْقَوْلِ﴾, "when they settle by night words He does not approve". The verse thus holds two opposite movements: a coming out into the open from the presence of the one addressed, and then a drawing back into the cover of night, where another matter is settled.
"A party of them" is some of those who speak: the saying "Obedience!" is ascribed to all of them, the settling by night to a party among them, and the verse keeps that difference in its wording. What is settled is "other than what you say", and the verb taqūlu in the phrase bears two readings: it may be addressed to the one spoken to, so that what is settled is other than what he says to them; or it may belong to the party, so that it is other than what the party itself says in his presence. Both readings stand in the wording, and in both, what is settled at night goes against what is said in the presence.
A writing then falls on what is settled by night: "Allah writes down what they settle by night." Writing, kitāba, is from k-t-b: holding speech in lines that fix it, so that it remains after the one who spoke it has passed. The verb is in the imperfect, so the writing runs alongside the settling itself: each time a matter is settled at night, it is fixed in writing. Yubayyitūna comes in the plural after bayyata ṭāʾifatun came in the singular; the party is a group, the verb passes from the word "party" to the people in it, and the writing falls on what they settle. What is settled under the cover of night is fixed in the writing.
The speech then turns to the one addressed, with two commands: "So turn aside from them and rely on Allah." Turning aside, iʿrāḍ, is from ʿ-r-ḍ: al-ʿurḍ is the side, and aʿraḍa ʿan al-shayʾ is said of one who turns his side toward a thing and takes his face away from it. The same command came earlier in this Surah, ﴿فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ وَعِظْهُمْ﴾, "so turn aside from them, and admonish them"; there the turning aside was coupled with admonition, here it is coupled with reliance. Reliance, tawakkul, is from w-k-l: wakala ilayhi al-amra is said of one who puts a matter in another's hand for him to take care of it, and tawakkala ʿalā llāh is to take Allah as the wakīl to whom one hands over one's matter.
The verse closes with "Allah suffices as a trustee." Sufficing, kifāya, is from k-f-y: closing the gap of need so that nothing else is sought beside it, so the trustee to whom the matter of the one addressed is handed is enough for him. Between this verse and the one before there is a sharing out of parts: there the one addressed was not sent "over them as a keeper", and here he is told to hand his matter over to Allah "as a trustee". The two words meet in Sūrat al-Anʿām, both denied of the one addressed there: ﴿وَمَا جَعَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًا ۖ وَمَا أَنتَ عَلَيْهِم بِوَكِيلٍ﴾, "We have not made you a keeper over them, nor are you a trustee over them"; in these two verses the keeping is denied of the sending of the one addressed, and the trusteeship is given to Allah.
The verse opens with a single noun that some people say in the presence, "Obedience!", from ṭ-w-ʿ, then follows them when they go out, from b-r-z, from the presence of the one addressed into the open, where a party of them settles by night, from b-y-t, under the cover of night, a matter other than what is said; the wording allows what is said to be the saying of the one addressed or the saying of the party itself. It then makes what is settled at night a thing written, from k-t-b, which Allah writes down as it runs, and tells the one addressed to turn aside from them, from ʿ-r-ḍ, and to rely on Allah, from w-k-l, closing with Allah's sufficing as trustee; so what the previous verse began is completed: the one addressed was not sent over them as a keeper, and Allah is the trustee who suffices.
Les deux mots se rencontrent dans la sourate al-Anʿām, tous deux niés de celui à qui la parole s'y adresse : ﴿وَمَا جَعَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًا ۖ وَمَا أَنتَ عَلَيْهِم بِوَكِيلٍ﴾, « Nous ne t'avons pas fait gardien au-dessus d'eux, et tu n'es pas garant sur eux » ; dans ces deux versets-ci, la garde est retirée à l'envoi de celui à qui la parole s'adresse, et la charge de garant est donnée à Allāh.
