﴾ Then We gave the turn back to you, against them, and kept you supplied with wealth and sons, and made you greater in those who go out when called. ﴿
The verse says "Then We gave the turn back," not fa-radadnā, "and so We gave back," and thumma, "then," calls for a slackening of interval, in rank and in time. Between the going to and fro through the gaps and the giving back of the turn lies a space the wording does not fill; a verse that knows how to keep silent leaves the interval to a particle to carry.
The verse before has "We roused against you," and this one "the turn," "against them": the very same particle, ʿalā, with its address changed. The sense of coming down remains, and what was replaced is the one it comes down upon. Read together, the two verses show one sentence turned round, with its weight falling on the other side.
Lakum, "to you," carries the lām of benefit, not the lām of direction: the wording is radadnā lakum, "We gave back for you," not radadnā ilaykum, "We gave back toward you." So the turn is given back into your account, rather than merely set down before you. Giving back, in r-d-d, is the returning of a thing to its first place and the fixing of it there, so what is given back is what was, then lapsed, then was restored to its place, not something new.
"The turn," al-karra, is definite, that is, the turn already known. Karr, in k-r-r, is a wheeling back after a turning away, a motion that went off and then bent round returning. So what was given back is a round that comes about and returns, not a victory begun afresh, and whoever reads the turn as a turn knows that it has another face it can come round to.
Amdadnā, "We kept supplied," is on the pattern afʿala from m-d-d, and madd is a joined lengthening that does not break, while imdād is the joining of giving to giving until no end of it can be seen. So the gift in the verse is a tributary that keeps running, not something handed over once.
"Wealth and sons" are both indefinite, with no number and no description, left unbounded because abundance is not what the detail is aimed at. The measure that is set out in detail comes at the end of the verse.
Jaʿalnā, "We made," is here as in "and made it a guidance," a setting that turns a state into one that holds: the people were set into the state of being many, and it is not said that they grew many.
Nafīran is a specifying word that makes clear in what the greatness of number lay. Nafr, in n-f-r, is a sudden going out from a place of rest, a going that runs and does not linger, and the nafīr are those who go out when the call is raised among them. So wealth and sons were named in the lump, and the last measure was then set out in detail: the number of those who go out at the call.
The verse reports the giving and names no cause for it; it does not say that they did well and so the turn was given back to them. The report stops at what took place, and the law comes in the next verse as a law, not as a verdict on anyone.
An interval is carried by the particle "then," followed by three gifts in order. The first is a turn given back "to you," with the lām of benefit, and "against them," with the particle that had been against you: the sentence is turned round, not replaced. The second is a supply joining giving to giving without a break, with wealth and sons neither counted nor described. The third is a setting into the state of being many, with its measure alone set out: "greater in those who go out when called." Wealth is gathered and sons are born, while strength remains in finding who will go out with you when the call is raised.
