﴾ And they said: we will not give you credence until you split open for us, out of the ground, a wellspring. ﴿
"And they said" consists of a wāw, a verb and a plural pronoun, with no name after them. The speech opens on a verb of saying attached to that pronoun of a group, and who they are is not stated: no description marks them off, no number fences them in, no place gathers them.
This is a choice in the wording, not a gap in it. Had the speakers been named, the passage would have become the report of a people who have passed; left unnamed, it remains the shape of a saying, fitted to any mouth that can manage it. A saying, from q-w-l, is a sound released from the mouth, cut off, that stretches out and stays attached to its owner: what has gone out remains attributed, even when its owner is unknown.
"We will not give you credence" cuts off what is to come, with a lām that shifts where credence lands. Lan cuts the verb off from the future and denies it there. So what is denied is a door shut from now on into all that follows, not a single occasion.
The finest point in the sentence is a single letter. The verse says "we will not give you credence," with a lām, rather than "we trust in you," with a bāʾ. The bāʾ fastens credence to a content that is credited, whereas the lām directs it at a person to whom it is given. So what is denied here is credence given to one particular person, not the weighing of a content laid out.
The root ʾ-m-n denotes a firmness that is held and taken into the interior until it comes to rest. So what has been withheld is the settling of the inward toward him, and this explains what follows: whoever withholds his settling from a person does not ask for an explanation to be understood; he asks for a mark to be pulled from that person's hand.
"Until" marks an end that the one demanding sets, and at which he halts. Ḥattā gives the refusal an end at which it is lifted. So the shut door has a described key, and the key is forged here, not there.
Whoever reads the verse sees where the hand has come to rest. The condition is laid down by the one who refuses, while the carrying out falls on the one addressed: the one called on to act has become the one who is waited on, and the one who waits has become the one who writes the condition.
"Split open for us" loads an act onto him and stipulates a benefit along with it. The verb is attached to the one addressed alone: it is "you" who must "split open," not a spring bursting open of itself. The demand is that he be the one to make it, not that the thing happen.
The root f-j-r denotes a narrow split that lets out what had massed behind it, which then runs on and on. That is the whole of the picture: a confined thing opened, not water made out of nothing. The confined thing is there before the split, and the split brings it out.
"For us" follows. The lām is a lām of assignment, so what is asked is that the confined thing open, and that it open for them in particular. The effect is stipulated, and then the one who is to have it is stipulated too.
"Out of the ground, a wellspring" names a place of issue and leaves the thing demanded indefinite. Min, "out of," fixes the outlet. The ground, from ʾ-r-ḍ, is a held mass, pressed and dense, that carries what is above it and confines what is below it. So the demand falls on the most tightly held thing under the foot: open for us what the earth closes down on with its weight.
What is demanded is "a wellspring," a single indefinite thing, neither described nor counted. The root n-b-ʿ denotes an emergence from the interior that shows itself out of a depth, and the yafʿūl measure intensifies the act and makes it lasting: a spring that does not run dry, not a seep that stops.
This is the first thing asked, and what comes after it is measured against it: water, for which the weight of the earth is to be split. Whoever makes the settling of his heart the price of a spring bursting open has priced himself at what comes out from under his feet.
A verb of saying is attached to a plural pronoun with no name after it, so the saying is kept and its speaker left aside; and q-w-l is a sound released and cut off that stretches out and stays attached to its speaker, so it remains attributed. Lan then cuts off what is to come, and the lām in "we will not give you credence" turns the refusal from a content to be weighed to a person to whom credence would be given; and ʾ-m-n is a firmness held in the interior until it comes to rest, so what is refused is the settling of the inward toward him. Ḥattā then opens for the refusal an end written by the one refusing and carried out by the one addressed. What is written is an act, not an occurrence: "split open" is attached to him, and f-j-r is a split that lets out a massed, confined thing so that it runs, so what is asked is the opening of what exists, not the making of what does not. "For us" then stipulates the owner of the effect, and min fixes the outlet in the ground, from ʾ-r-ḍ, holding and dense, confining what is beneath it; what comes out is "a wellspring," indefinite, on the yafʿūl measure of what does not stop. The first demand goes down to what is under the foot, and the rest rise after it.
