﴾ He said: my Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), why have You gathered me blind, when I used to be one who sees? ﴿
The one who turned his side away now speaks, and the first thing a turner-away utters is a call: the first word in his mouth is the name whose remembrance he went past.
"My Rabb" is a call with its calling particle dropped and its possessive letter dropped too, leaving only the vowel. It is the shortest form a call can take, and the nearest. The one who crossed over with a particle of going-past calls with nothing in between.
The root r-b-b denotes a running attendance that carries what it attends from one condition into another. He calls, then, by the name that means his own carrying from stage to stage, and what he complains of is a carrying that has landed upon him.
The wording of the verse before returns in the mouth of the one it was said about. "Why" asks after a cause, not after a ruling: he does not say "do not gather me," nor "why am I here." He asked the reason for a state that came down on him, and granted all that stands beneath it.
He then gives back two words that had stood in the report made about him: the gathering and the blindness. It was said of him there "and We gather him on the Day of Standing, blind," in the plural of majesty and in the third person, and he says it with the letter of direct address. The verb is one, and its face has turned: a report made about him has become a question he raises.
He did not contest the gathering itself; he contested a state that came along with it.
A circumstantial conjunction is followed by the particle of realization, in a plea built on an eye that once was. The whole clause is set there to stand against one single word: "blind."
"I used to be" is a completed past. He did not say "I am one who sees"; he said that he had been so, and in this he is himself the witness that the first condition has run out.
"One who sees" is from b-ṣ-r: a firm unbroken holding of the seen that binds an eye to what is in front of it. It is on the pattern of what settles upon its owner and stays.
So the plea in this verse turns wholly on the axis of the eye: blind set over against one who sees. The verse before it named no eye and no looking; it named a side that was turned and a remembrance that was gone past. The answer that follows will take the pairing out of his hand and set it in another place.
He argues by what he used to see with, and makes no mention of what he used to see.
The one who turned his side away speaks, so that the first letter in his mouth is a call upon the name whose remembrance he went past, its particle dropped and its possessive letter dropped; it is from r-b-b, a running attendance that carries what it attends from state to state. "Why" then asks after the cause of a state, not after the ground of a ruling, so the claim is granted and only its description is contested. Two words are then given back exactly as they were said of him: the verb of gathering, which came in the plural of majesty and in the third person, returns with the letter of direct address in his mouth, and the state he was described by is the one he sets up as his objection. Then comes a circumstance made certain by the particle of realization: "I used to be" is a completed past in which the speaker concedes that the first condition has run out, and "one who sees," from b-ṣ-r, is a firm unbroken holding that binds an eye to what is in front of it, on the pattern of what keeps to its owner. So the whole plea is built on one axis, the eye, whereas the verse that laid down the ruling named no eye at all; it named a side that was turned and a remembrance that was gone past. He raises his plea by the instrument that was his, and never mentions what he turned it toward.
