﴾ And whoever turns his side away from the remembrance of Me, for him there is a living pressed narrow, and We gather him on the Day of Standing, blind. ﴿
The clause opens on a conditional pronoun that names no one. Not a people, not a man, not a class: a door left open for whoever walks through it. And the verb is from ʿ-r-ḍ, on the fourth form. A ʿurḍ is the broad side of a thing, and to do this to something is to turn your broad side to it. The one described here did not deny, did not argue, did not say anything at all. He turned his shoulder. That is the lightest act in the line and the heaviest description in it: the denier is still standing in front of the thing, contending with it; this one has moved it out of his field of sight with a movement of the body. And the particle after the verb is one of passing beyond, not of stopping: he neither halts at it nor goes by it, he crosses over it and moves on.
What he crosses over is dhikrī, "the remembrance of Me." The word, with that same possessive, has already stood twice in this sūra, and each time a different particle governs it: once with the lām of purpose, in "and set the prayer upright for the remembrance of Me"; once inside a place-particle, in "and do not slacken, the two of you, inside My remembrance"; and here with the particle of passing beyond. One word aimed at, worked inside of, and gone past. The word does not change; the particle is what stands a man up or takes him out.
The answer does not begin by taking anything away. It begins by granting: "for him there is." He has something, and that something is then described. What he has is a maʿīsha, from ʿ-y-sh: a gripping that opens out, runs softly, and then spreads through every direction. That is what the root says on its own, an extension that becomes general; and the noun names not life itself but what a person lives by. Then the description falls on it, ḍankan, from ḍ-n-k: a densely pressed holding that is stopped up so that it finds no outlet. The description closes on the thing described from every side the thing was spreading through. Nothing is said to be withheld. It is said that he has a living, and then the living is qualified. The walls come in toward the ribs and the house stays standing.
Both words are indefinite. It is not said which living, nor when the narrowness comes, nor in what it is felt. And the qualifying word takes no feminine ending, no dual, no plural: a feminine noun is described by it exactly as it stands, as though narrowness took no shape from the shape of what it narrows.
In the first half of the verse no agent is named. Then, in the second, the plural of majesty enters: "and We gather him." The narrowing is stated with no one stated as doing it; the gathering is stated with the One who does it. The verb is from ḥ-sh-r, the drawing together of scattered things by a running motion until they are taken in, a word whose material belongs to crowds pulled in from their edges. Here it falls on a single pronoun. The wide verb of assembly is conjugated over one man, and that is to be read and not passed over: whoever turned his side alone is drawn in alone.
The last word is a state he arrives in. ʿ-m-y is a running confusion in which the differences between things are lost, not the going out of a light but the going out of the edge between one thing and another. So the one who moved a single thing out of his line of sight is gathered with every distinction gone. The same word, in the same setting, stands elsewhere in the Book, in "he is blind in the last one." The neighbouring is noted here, and what stands there is not explained again.
He turned his shoulder to one thing, and was gathered with the difference between all things gone. Nothing was taken from him; the walls simply came in.
