﴾ He said: have you come to us to drive us out of our land by your sorcery, Moses? ﴿
An interrogative prefix stands at the head of a past verb. So the question is not about something awaited but about something already done and standing. The coming has happened, and the questioner is asking after its purpose. The root j-y-ʾ is a running gathering that is cut off at its arrival, so a coming is a completed reaching and not an approach only. Which is why the arrival itself cannot be denied, and what is denied is what it came for.
This very verb was said in this same exchange ten verses earlier: ﴿قَدْ جِئْنَاكَ بِآيَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكَ﴾, "we have come to you with a sign from your Lord." There, "we came" and "you"; here, "you came" and "us." One verb, the two pronouns turned about, and in both places a preposition of instrument after the verb. What follows that preposition is where the matter lies.
"Come to us," "drive us out," "our land." Three first-person plurals in nine words. And this exchange began with a question about ﴿فَمَن رَّبُّكُمَا﴾, "who is the Lord of you two," where the questioner was one man addressing two. Now he is a body addressing one. The numbers have turned over on both sides. And whoever gathers himself into a group at the moment of answering has moved the affair from a questioning into a quarrel. The question is no longer about a Lord; it is about ground.
The prefix on "to drive out" is one of purpose, and the one assigning the purpose is the questioner, not the doer. He supplies the coming of another with an aim he never heard him state, and then asks after it in the manner of one settling a matter rather than one seeking an answer.
"Drive out" stands on the causative pattern of kh-r-j, and this material now runs for the third time in this near context: growth was brought out of the earth by water; then it was said ﴿وَمِنْهَا نُخْرِجُكُمْ﴾, "and out of her We bring you out"; and now a man is accused of having come to bring a people out of a land. Twice the bringing out is attributed to the first-person plural, and the third time to the "you" being addressed. The material is one and the one it is attributed to changes. And whoever fears being brought out of a ground was told, three lines earlier, that out of it he is brought in any case.
"Our land" is annexed to them. The root ʾ-r-ḍ is a base along which a thing runs and is then gathered into it and grows heavy on it, so it is the site upon which traces settle. He annexes to himself what was described a few lines earlier as a bedding made for people at large. And this phrase will not stay in his mouth: it is said again later in this sūra by other mouths, with the pronoun of its annexation changed. That it travels is said here; where it travels to is not.
Go back now to the two prepositions. In the first place it was "with a sign from your Lord," so what is carried is indefinite and its source is named by annexation. Here it is "by your sorcery," so what is carried is made definite by annexation to its own bearer and has no source at all. One preposition in both places, and what follows it changes. What had been referred to a Lord is stripped off and stuck onto the man, and given another name. The effect is not denied; its origin is relocated.
The root s-ḥ-r is a veiled running that moves on unbroken, an effect that passes without its channel being seen. So the accusation, in its own wording, does not deny that something happened; it says that its channel is hidden. And whoever refers an effect to a hidden channel has admitted the effect.
He threw the accusation and then called the name. The vocative stands at the end of the line, as it stood at the start of this exchange. So both his speeches here end on the same name: a question closed by it and an accusation closed by it. The words are put first and the man addressed is put last, twice and not once.
One preposition of instrument in both mouths, with a different noun after it. What was referred to a Lord is stuck onto a man and renamed; the effect itself is never denied.
