﴾ So they pulled their affair apart between them, and they kept the low speech hidden. ﴿
A fā that follows without a gap. The saying was said and this happened; nothing stands between the word and its effect.
The root n-z-ʿ is an uprooting that comes up from within and draws a thing off its place: to haul the bucket up out of the well, to strip a garment off a body. The material sense is the extraction of something settled from where it had settled. And the verb comes in the sixth form, the form of mutual participation: every party pulls toward its own side. There is no puller and no thing pulled toward one place here, only many hands on a single object. And a single object pulled from several directions does not move. It tears.
What is pulled is not something outside them. It is annexed to them: "their affair." They drag at what belongs to them. A-m-r is a joining that runs through and extends, gathering a matter into one hand that decides; hence both the command that is obeyed and the affair that is managed, and each of the two requires a single quarter that holds the power to settle. By its own make, an affair does not bear being shared out among pullers. And what the affair actually was is not said. It is annexed and left unexplained: we know they had a matter and that they split over it, and we do not know over what.
Then a container: bayna, "between," the adverb of what falls in the middle of several parties. The dispute happened inside it and not outside it. This is a restriction to be read and not passed over. The rift stood up and did not leave the circle, and a man who quarrels among his own people is not the man who quarrels in front of his opponent. The speech just heard opened a crack in the assembly that was not visible from outside it.
N-j-w is a rising that comes up from within and gets clear: the najwa is the raised ground that stays safe from what floods around it, and to be delivered is to get clear. So najwā, low confidential speech, is speech lifted out of general hearing, set apart on a rise the flood does not reach. It is by its own nature covered. And then "they kept it hidden" is laid on top of that: s-r-r is a running held in a concealed place so that it does not appear. The covering happens twice: speech already set apart, and then a hiding added to it. What they said is not reported, not one letter of it. The next verse opens with "they said," and the audible speech is heard, while the low speech stays shut exactly as it was left. The act is named; the words are not. Whoever fills that space has opened what the verse closed with two words.
Many hands on one thing that was already theirs, inside a circle that keeps the tear from showing. Then a speech that is hidden twice, and reported without its content.
