﴾ We have come to trust in our Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), that He may cover over for us our missings of the mark, and the sorcery you forced upon us. And Allah is better and longer lasting. ﴿
The first time, they said: "We have come to trust in the Rabb of Aaron and Moses," with the letter of attachment, and what it was annexed to was two men. It was given back to them as "you have given him your trust," with the letter of belonging, and what it governed was the pronoun of one man.
Now it is said: "our Rabb." The letter that had been stripped away returns, and the annexation then passes over to the speakers themselves.
Between the two there had been a third station: "the One who split us into being." These are three steps in four verses: the Rabb of two men, then the One who split them into being, then their own Rabb; through them the relation drew nearer until it was theirs.
The saying opens with the particle of emphasis, the same fastener with which speech was drawn tight against them twice in this scene; with it their own saying about themselves is now drawn tight.
The lām states the purpose, so the end is spoken and not inferred.
The root gh-f-r denotes a depth that covers thickly and then holds what it has covered. From it comes the helmet worn on the head, which covers it and shields it, and the wrap with which a thing is covered so as to be kept. In the material, then, covering over is a cover that shields; it is neither the removing of a thing nor the denial that it happened.
The root kh-ṭ-ʾ is a swerving from the aim that lands somewhere other than its place. "Missings of the mark" comes as a plural rather than a singular: acts that are counted, not one condition.
The phrase is joined to "our missings of the mark": the covering is asked for it as it is asked for the rest, and it was neither excepted nor taken out of the account.
The relative is bare and left unspecified, and its kind is then given by "of," just as in the verse before this one it was given by "of the clear proofs." The two places face each other in one pattern.
The root k-r-h is a hold that runs and then drives into the interior without its agreement. The causative form, governed by "upon," is the setting of a matter down upon its bearer, a laying on.
This is their own saying, carried over in its own words. The verse recounts it without confirming or denying it, and whoever rules for it or against it has said what the verse did not say.
Two verses earlier he had said to them: "which of us is harsher in punishment and longer lasting." In saying it he set up a scale with two pans, put himself in one of them, gathered both parties into a single pronoun, "us," and chose the scale's two words himself: a harshness and a lasting.
Here it is said: "better and longer lasting." The second word is his own word, letter for letter, and the form is his form: an elative joined to an elative. The scale he set up was used as it stood, not broken.
The first word, however, has changed: it had been "harsher in punishment" and it has become "better." He measured by what wounds, and he is measured by what is chosen. The root kh-y-r is something piercing that runs softly through a thing, its effect flowing on in it, and from it come the choosing and the thing chosen.
Something else has changed too. He asked "which of us," seeking that one of the two pans be named, and he is answered neither with "you" nor with "not you." The question is dropped entire and only the weightier pan is named, so the other side is left without mention at all.
In the verse just before this one it had been said to him that his deciding is in "this nearer life." So his field was bounded first, and then the lasting was said of another.
The root b-q-y is a fixity that extends on after whatever has gone has gone. He made it a description of his punishment, so it is made a description of one whom his punishment does not reach.
The threatened took the threatener's word and weighed him in it.
The letter that had been stripped away comes back when their saying is said again, and the annexation moves three steps in four verses: the Rabb of two men, then the One who split them into being, then their own Rabb. The saying is headed by the particle of emphasis, the fastener with which speech was drawn tight against them twice in this scene. Then comes the lām of purpose: gh-f-r is a depth that covers and shields, neither an erasing of a trace nor a denial that a thing happened, and kh-ṭ-ʾ is a swerving that lands other than in its place, here in the plural. Joined to it is what they say they were forced to, so it enters the request for covering and is not excepted; this is a saying carried over in its own words, which the verse neither confirms nor denies. Then the close. Two verses earlier a scale with two pans was set up, both parties were gathered into one pronoun, and two words were chosen for the scale: a harshness and a lasting. So it is said here: "better and longer lasting." The second word stands letter for letter and form for form, while the first has changed from the harshness to the good, and the question about "which of us" is dropped, so that nothing is named but the weightier pan. His deciding had been bounded one verse earlier to "this nearer life," so the lasting is said of what stands beyond the bound. b-q-y is a fixity that extends on after whatever has gone has gone; he made it a description of his punishment and it became a description of what his punishment does not reach. The word is his word, the scale is his scale, and the two pans are turned over.
Autre chose a changé.
