﴾ They said: We will never set you above what has come to us of the clear proofs, nor above the One who split us into being. So decide what you are deciding. You decide only this nearer life. ﴿
They were promised cutting, binding and punishment. None of that appears in their answer: no hand, no foot, no trunk of a tree. The answer lands on one word of what was said to them, the word of preference. He had arranged two pans for them, and they reply about the arrangement, not about the threat. A-th-r is a mark left behind so that what passed can be followed by it; the causative is to put a thing first and go on after it, leaving the rest. The negation is the one that denies the future outright, and the preposition sets what is preferred above what is left. So what is denied is that this man be placed on top.
What he would have been placed above is named in two parts. The first is a bare relative whose kind is then given: what came to us, of the clear proofs. The kind is stated and no number is counted. And the verb is "came to us," not "we came to it": in this arrival they are the ones reached. They do not claim to have sought, searched or chosen. B-y-n is a separation by which a thing stands out from what borders it and so is known, and a clear proof is what has been cut off from anything it might be confused with. That stands against what happened in the assembly a short while ago: there, something blurred in the eye and a seeming arose; here, something is distinct and does not blur.
The second part is joined to the first: "and the One who split us into being." He is not called by a name. He is identified by a relative clause and its verb. F-ṭ-r is a splitting that begins what was not there before; the same material gives the cracks that open in a thing, and the breaking of a fast at the first taste. So this is an origination by cleaving, not a copying from a model. Two verses ago they had identified him by two men, saying that they trusted in the Lord of Aaron and Moses. Here they identify him by what he did to them. The relation has moved from other people to themselves.
Then they neither plead nor ask for delay. They order him to act, and the connective makes this follow from what precedes: since nothing remains to be bought from them, let what is going forward go forward. "What you are deciding" is a relative with a nominal clause after it whose predicate is a participle; what it is, is not said. The thing decided is left as blank as everything else withheld in this scene, so that what he threatened is not repeated back to him. Q-ḍ-y is a severing that completes a matter so that there is no returning into it; hence a judge, whose separating ends the quarrel.
And then a restricting particle, in the same breath. The command is handed over in the first clause and its field is bounded in the second, with nothing between them. The root has now run three times in this verse in three forms: an imperative, a participle, an imperfect. The act is granted to him three times over, and then its place is enclosed. "This" points to something present, indicated by hand, and "the nearer" is the feminine comparative from d-n-w. A comparative requires something it is compared against, and that other thing is not mentioned in the verse. So his authority is bounded by the nearer, and the farther is passed over and left folded inside the word. They gave him everything he owns, and in the same sentence told him how much that is.
The threat is not answered; the ranking is. They hand him his own command and, without pausing, draw its border with a comparative whose other term they never say.
