﴾ Say: If you yourselves owned the storehouses of my Lord's mercy, you would then hold back, out of a dread of the spending. And the human being has always been one who narrows what he gives. ﴿
The verse opens with the same wording that opened a supposition a few verses back in this Surah: a command to say, and then the particle of the barred condition. There what was supposed was that the earth's dwellers be other than they are; here it is supposed that those addressed own what is not theirs. And there is a precision in the build. It does not say "if you owned"; a detached pronoun stands between the particle and the verb, and that separation throws the weight onto the persons rather than onto the act. What is supposed is not that the owning should come about, but that it should come about in your hands. And the verb is in the present, which gives continuance rather than a moment. Owning has its own entry in the glossary. The supposition is set up and left to its answer, and no one is argued with.
What is supposed into their hands is not wealth and not provision. It is storehouses; and then storehouses of a mercy; and then a mercy belonging to "my Lord". Three links in a chain, and with each of them what is supposed moves one step further from the one it is supposed for. The root kh-z-n is a hollow in which goods are packed under pressure and then shut away in a closed interior; from it comes the verb for putting a thing in safe keeping and so withholding it. A storehouse, in these letters, is a place of holding and not a place of giving out, and here the word is plural rather than single. So the very thing supposed to be handed over to them is the thing whose office is to keep. Mercy has its own entry in the glossary; what this clause adds is that it is annexed to "my Lord", with the speaker's own pronoun, so that it is ascribed to the Lord of the one speaking and not to those addressed. Even inside the supposition it stays unowned by them, though they own its storehouses.
The answer comes with two markers, a particle that requites the condition and then an emphatic prefix on the verb: emphasis over emphasis for a result that has not occurred and will not. The root m-s-k is a holding that takes something into a narrow compass and then closes over it so that it is held fast in place. So the withholding is a grip that encloses and shuts, letting nothing under it slip. And no object is given to the verb: they would hold back, and what they would hold back is not said. The motion itself is the report. Look at the match. Storehouses in the hand, whose office is to keep; and a hand that closes and keeps. Hand the keeper over to a keeper and nothing comes out of it.
"Out of a dread" is an accusative of stated cause: a ground put in the accusative, declaring the reason for the act rather than describing it. And this is the second such dread in this Surah in exactly this case. The first stands in ﴿وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَوْلَادَكُمْ خَشْيَةَ إِمْلَاقٍ﴾, the second here in ﴿لَّأَمْسَكْتُمْ خَشْيَةَ الْإِنفَاقِ﴾. One word, one position, and a different thing feared. There, the dread of a state that might come down on the one who dreads; here, the dread of an act that would issue from him. The first fears what falls on you; the second fears what you do. And look at the definite and the indefinite. The first thing feared is indefinite, fixed to no time and no measure; the second carries the article, so it is the whole kind and not one outlay. Spending has its own entry in the glossary, and so does dread. Then see what each of the two brings forth. The first is the ground of a killing that falls on someone other than the one who fears; the second is the ground of a holding that closes inside his own hand. A fear that reaches out until it takes a life, and a fear that draws in until it makes a fist. In their grammar they are the same, a cause in the accusative given for an act, and neither of them is excused by it.
Up to this point the address has been plural throughout. Then those addressed are left behind and the kind is named with the article, so the ruling moves out of a particular set of people and onto the kind they belong to. The verb of being here gives permanence rather than a past that stopped, and the human being has its own entry in the glossary. The closing description is on the pattern faʿūl, which makes a description a settled habit rather than an event that occurs. The root q-t-r is a holding-in that tightens and then narrows finely, so that what comes out of it runs thin and unbroken; from it comes the word for the fine thread of scent rising off a roast, and the verb for narrowing what one spends on one's household. So the one described is not a man who cuts off giving; he is a man who narrows its channel, letting the little out and keeping the greater part. Hand him the storehouses and only that thread would come out of them.
Two dreads in one Surah, both in the accusative as declared causes: one reaches out and kills, one draws in and keeps. Neither is excused by being named.
