﴾ And had We brought them to their end with a punishment before it, they would have said: our Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), why did You not send us a messenger, so that we might follow Your signs before we were brought low and laid open? ﴿
"And had" is a particle of withholding for withholding: the answer is withheld because the condition never fell. So what comes after it did not happen, and what stands in its answer was never said.
This is where a reader halts in the verse. The verse raises speech that would have fallen had its cause fallen, not speech that was spoken and is now retold: a saying put into a mouth that never opened on it.
Whoever reads it as a report of speech that happened has taken the particle out of its office.
"Had We brought them to their end" is from h-l-k: an emptiness that takes hold of its place until it is closed over, on the fourth form, with a doer from outside. It is the very word that stood in this passage six verses back, in "how many We brought to their end before them of the generations." There it is something that fell and passed; here it is something supposed that did not fall.
"With a punishment" is indefinite, and "before it" is a pronoun with no antecedent stated for it in the verse. So the supposition is dated by a thing that is not named.
An emphatic lām in the answer of the particle, and then a call.
The first word in their supposed speech is "our Rabb." One verse earlier they had said "a sign from his Rabb," with the pronoun of the absent: his Rabb, not theirs. When their own ending is supposed upon them, what is in their mouths becomes "our Rabb," with the nūn of the speakers.
The belonging they pushed away while awake is drawn close inside the supposition. The pronoun is the thing that moved, and nothing besides it.
"Why did You not" stands here over a past verb, so that it reproaches and blames over what was not done.
This is the third site of these two letters in this passage: they came over a noun and withheld, then over a present verb in their mouths and urged, then over a past verb in their mouths and blamed. Two letters that do not change, and three offices.
What they blame in the supposition is that no messenger was sent to them; in the verse before this one they are asking for a sign from one who was sent.
"A messenger" is indefinite, from r-s-l: a setting-out from a source that does not halt until it joins the one who receives it. In their speech the office is named and the one who holds it is not. In the supposition they ask for a description; awake, they turn away the one who stood in it.
A causal connective follows, and the verb after it takes its dependent ending: following, in their supposed speech, is a result of a sending, not a thing begun on its own.
"We might follow" is from t-b-ʿ on the pattern iftaʿala: a letting slip followed by a catching up and a clinging, and iftaʿala makes it a work the follower takes upon himself. So inside the supposition they bind themselves to something they would make with their own hands.
"Your signs": awake they said "a sign," indefinite, single, ascribed to an absent one, and in the supposition they say "Your signs," definite, gathered into a plural, joined to one addressed. The single word makes three turns: from indefinite to definite, from one to many, from the absent to the addressed.
What was asked for as one far thing is confessed as many near ones, in speech that was never said.
"Before" comes a second time in the verse. It was named first in the supposition, for the punishment, and it is named here in what they fear: one boundary-word setting two boundaries within a single verse.
"We were brought low" is from dh-l-l: a softness by which a thing is led by whoever has taken hold of it. So lowness, in its material, is a being-led, not a pain.
"Laid open" is from kh-z-y: an inward flaw that works its way out into the open and spreads. So this is the uncovering of what had been covered.
The two verbs face two directions, one softening and being led, the other opening and being seen: an inside that yields, and an outside that is laid bare.
They are the last thing feared, in speech that was never said.
A particle of withholding for withholding, so the condition never fell and the answer was never said: the verse raises speech in a mouth that never opened on it, and whoever reads it as a report of speech that happened has taken the particle out of its office. What is supposed, "We brought them to their end," is from h-l-k, the word that fell in this passage six verses back over generations that passed, so what fell there is supposed here. A call follows whose first word is "our Rabb," with the nūn of the speakers, where one verse earlier they had said "his Rabb," with the pronoun of the absent: the belonging pushed away while awake is drawn close inside the supposition, and the pronoun alone is what moved. Then comes "why not" a third time in this passage, standing over a noun and withholding, over a present verb and urging, over a past verb here and blaming: two letters that do not change, and three offices. "A messenger," indefinite, is from r-s-l, a setting-out from a source that does not halt until it joins the one who receives it, so the office is named and the one who holds it is not. A causal connective follows, with "we might follow," from t-b-ʿ on the pattern iftaʿala, a letting slip followed by a catching up and a clinging, taken on by the one who does it. "Your signs" is definite, gathered into a plural and addressed, after it had been, while they were awake, indefinite, single, and ascribed to an absent one. Then "before" comes a second time, with two verbs facing two directions: "we were brought low," from dh-l-l, a softness by which a thing is led by whoever has taken hold of it, and "laid open," from kh-z-y, an inward flaw that works its way out into the open and spreads. A being-led inside and an uncovering outside, both of them the last thing feared in speech that was never uttered.
