﴾ A thing to enjoy for a term, for you and for your grazing herds. ﴿
At the head of this count it was said: ﴿فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ﴾, "so let the human being look at his food." One pronoun referred the food to him. Then acts were counted in which he had no hand at all. And now a single word arrives and calls what was referred to him by its true name: matāʿan.
And matāʿ, from m-t-ʿ, is an extension cut off at its completion, so the word carries the benefit and the end of the benefit in one utterance. It stands in the accusative, gathering all that went before it, the pouring and the splitting and the growing, and saying what all of it was for.
So what he took for property is named a use, and what he called his own is handed back to him with a term on it. The pronoun fixes a hand on the thing; matāʿan fixes a term to the thing.
The count opened with an absent singular, "so let the human being look," and it closes on an addressed plural, "for you." The one absent has become a company present, and what was being said about him is now said to him.
And the turn happens at the share and not at the acts. While the acts were being counted he stayed far off, looked at; when his portion came, he was called. Name the share and its owner steps forward.
Two lāms, not one. Had it been "for you and your herds," the herds would have entered the share of those addressed as a tail of theirs; because the lām is repeated, a portion stands for them in the sentence on its own.
And anʿām is from n-ʿ-m: a giving that rises out of a source and settles in its receiver, clinging to him. So the name these animals carry is taken from the very root of giving, and here they are among those given to, and not only among what is given.
And the human was ordered to look at "his food," and when the count ended there was another eater on the list. There is no table for one in this counting.
And this clause returns letter for letter as the seal of another count: ﴿مَتَاعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ﴾. There a sky, a ground, a water, a pasture and mountains were counted; here what is eaten and what is grazed.
Two counts whose contents differ and whose closing agrees. The word does the work of a seal: set at the end of what has been tallied, it says that the whole tally was for this, and for a time.
One pronoun at the head of the count referred the food to the looker, and one word at its end gives it its name. Matāʿan, from m-t-ʿ, is an extension cut off at its completion, so the benefit and its ending sit in one word, and the accusative gathers the pouring, the splitting and the growing into a single purpose. Then the speech shifts from an absent singular who was ordered to look to an addressed plural whose share is named: "for you." Then a second lām is repeated and raises for the herds a standing portion with no dependency in it, and they are from n-ʿ-m, the root of giving: a giving that rises from a source and clings to its receiver. And the clause returns letter for letter as the seal of another count, doing the work of a seal in both places. He was ordered to look at his food, and when he held the look long enough he found in the bowl a hand that was not his, a term he had not set, and another mouth eating beside him.
The look that began at "his food" ends at a word that gives it back to him with a date on it, and with someone else at the table.
En tête de ce compte il fut dit : ﴿فَلْيَنظُرِ الْإِنسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ﴾, « que l'être humain regarde donc sa nourriture ».
