﴾ So bring them the news that shows on the skin: a gripping confinement that takes hold and does not let go, ﴿
B-sh-r is an opening that goes out and spreads finely over a surface and then runs along it. From it comes bashara, the outer skin, which publishes what is inside by flushing and paling. And bashsharahu is to tell someone news whose trace shows on his skin, so what the letters carry is a surfacing and not a gladness. Gladness is one of the faces of what surfaces; it is not the root itself.
So the verb here stands on its own ground. Those who were described one word ago as having covered and then stored away are now given news that comes out on the surface. They screened what they knew and shut it into the hollow, and what answers that is a thing that cannot be screened or stored: a mark to be read on a face.
Then the address swings for the fourth time in nine verses. An oath was sworn to a company present, then absent ones were asked after, then reported on, and now a single hearer is commanded to carry them news. The imperative is singular and those who receive the news are many.
ʿ-dh-b is a grip that passes in sharply so as to hold fast and to withhold, and then joins on so that its holding lasts. In its letters, confinement is a shutting-in that does not release the one it has. And they had held fast and stored away, so what comes upon them holds them in the same manner. A hand that closed on something meets a hand that closes on it.
And alīm is from ʾ-l-m: an edge that falls, clings, and then shuts over what it has clung to. It is on the pattern of a fixed quality, one settled in what it describes rather than one that comes over it and passes. So the description belongs to the confinement itself: it is of its nature to take and not to send away. The verse described nobody's feeling. It described the nature of what grips.
And the two words came indefinite together. Neither "the confinement" was said, nor was it bounded by a time or by a place, so it stayed unspecified exactly as the objects of their own verbs stayed unspecified. The marks of what they are given news of are screened from them as they screened what they knew.
Bashshir, from b-sh-r, is an opening that goes out, spreads over a surface and runs along it, whence the skin that publishes what is inside: the root is a surfacing and not a gladness. So the one who covered and stored is met with news that cannot be screened or shut away. And the address swings for the fourth time: one man is ordered to carry it to many. ʿAdhāb, from ʿ-dh-b, is a grip that passes in sharply, holds fast and withholds, and whose hold lasts. Alīm, from ʾ-l-m, is an edge that falls, clings and shuts over what it clung to, on the pattern of a quality settled in what it describes: it describes the one that takes, not what the taken one feels. And both words are indefinite, with no bound and no hour. They hid, and it is published over them; they held fast, and what is described to them is what does not let go.
