﴾ Or did you suppose (ḥasibtum) that you would enter the garden without the pattern (mathal) of those who passed before you reaching you? Distress and harm touched them, and they were shaken (zulzilū) until the messenger and those who gave trust with him said: "When is the help of Allah?" Truly, the help of Allah is near. ﴿
ḥ-s-b: the reckoning as a mistaken estimate
The root ḥ-s-b names counting and estimating by a measure carried in the mind. "Or did you suppose" is not merely a question thrown in to object; it is an uncovering of the reckonings that run in silence among those newly come to trust. What is noticed is that people, in the moments of spiritual bargaining, reproduce the logic of the equation: "I have given trust, therefore the reward is owed." The verse strikes that equation and puts another in its place: the reward comes down after the crossing of the pattern, mathal, and not by the bare declaring of belonging.
d-kh-l with j-n-n: entering the garden as the crossing of a sill
The root d-kh-l names the going into a bounded space across a sill, and j-n-n names the covering and the protection that the one who enters finds there. What becomes clear is that the garden, janna, is at its root the covered and safe place, and not merely a place of ease. To enter it is therefore not a taking from the outside, but a passing toward the inside. The lesson here is that every passing requires the crossing of the sill, and the sill here is the pattern that went through those who came before.
m-th-l: the pattern as a recurring structure
The root m-th-l names structural likeness and not literal sameness. "The pattern of those who passed before you" does not mean that the details will repeat in their shape; it means that the underlying structure of the trial will repeat. What is certain is that the Qur'an uses "pattern" precisely in order to say that the pressure coming to you is not a private accident, but a law that holds steady through the history of the callings. Whoever grasps this stops asking "why me?" and moves to the sounder question: "how do I cross this same structure?"
m-s-s with b-ʾ-s and ḍ-r-r: the touch of affliction in its two kinds
The root m-s-s names a contact that leaves a mark without any deep piercing being required. The difference between b-ʾ-s and ḍ-r-r is fine: the first names the hard distress under which life grows narrow, the second names the harm that touches growth and usefulness in goods and in bodies. What is noticed is that the verse names the two kinds together, so as to say that the testing arrives on more than one face: suffering in the freedom of movement, baʾsāʾ, and suffering in the resources, ḍarrāʾ. And the one who gives trust crosses the two, and not one of them only.
z-l-z-l: the shaking as a jolt of the structure
The root z-l-z-l is among the doubled forms in Arabic, and it names a repeated trembling that reaches the base of a thing and not its edges. What becomes clear is that "they were shaken" is not a mere frightening; it is the jolting of what they had been counting as fixed: the bonds between them, the certainty, the possibilities, even the pictures they held of themselves. This kind of testing is necessary because it uncovers which structure the trust had been standing on: if it stood on returns, it came down; if it stood on a direct tie to the truth, it held.
n-ṣ-r with q-r-b: the help is near as an answer and not as a promise
The root n-ṣ-r names backing with force at the moment of need, and q-r-b names nearness in time or in place. The verse's close, "Truly, the help of Allah is near," comes as an answer to the question "When is the help of Allah?" What is certain is that the verse teaches that the help does not come before the question but after it, because the question is itself the proof that the sill has been reached, and past that sill lies the opening. The nearness here is not linear in time alone; it is structural: the moment in which it is uncovered that the help had been near the whole time.
Thus the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: "entering the garden" is the name of the role of one who crossed the sill of the pattern that recurs in the history of the callings; and the shaking, zalzala, is the name of the role of the testing that uncovers which structure the trust had been standing on; and the question "When is the help of Allah?" is the name of the role of the moment in which the pressure reaches the sill of the answer, and not the name of the role of doubt.
This verse cuts through the illusion of a reward without testing. The root ḥ-s-b, in "Or did you suppose," uncovers silent reckonings running in the minds of those newly come to trust: "we have given trust, so the sheltered passage is owed to us." And the verse strikes that equation with another: ﴿وَلَمَّا يَأْتِكُم مَّثَلُ الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِن قَبْلِكُم﴾. The pattern, from m-th-l, is structural likeness and not literal sameness: the law that repeats through the history of the callings. Then the root m-s-s describes a touch that leaves a mark: b-ʾ-s, the hard distress under which life grows narrow, and ḍ-r-r, the harm that touches resources and bodies, the two of them together, because the testing arrives on more than one face. Then comes the deepest of them: z-l-z-l, a repeated trembling that reaches the base of the structure and not its edges, and it uncovers which structure the trust had been standing on. And the question ﴿مَتَىٰ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ﴾ is not doubt but the proof that the sill has been reached, and its answer comes from q-r-b: "Truly, the help of Allah is near," a nearness that is structural and not merely linear in time.
