🔬 Reflection
The Complete Arc: A Simple Unity, Then a Sending, Then a Fracture, Then Guidance
The verse traces an arc of the whole history of humankind in a single sentence: a first, simple, undifferentiated state, then an intervention by sending and the Book, then a rupture, then a correction. The precise point for reflection is that the arc neither begins with evil nor ends with it. Its beginning is unity, its end is guidance; and the fracture in the middle is an accident between two sound ends, not a fixed origin. So divergence, in the Qur'an's vision, is not a nature the human being is born into, but a historical event with a time at which it began, and therefore with a remedy that can be reached.
And this same arc recurs in the Qur'an in the very same words. ﴿وَمَا كَانَ النَّاسُ إِلَّا أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً فَاخْتَلَفُوا﴾ (10:19) repeats the same passage from unity to divergence. And ﴿وَلَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّكَ لَجَعَلَ النَّاسَ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً ۖ وَلَا يَزَالُونَ مُخْتَلِفِينَ﴾ (11:118) reveals that keeping unity by force was never the intent; divergence is left as a field for choice, not negated by compulsion. The first unity was not a lost paradise to be longed for, but a starting point for a path whose goal is a guidance that is chosen, not a uniformity that is imposed.
The Fracture Comes From the People of Knowledge, Not From the Ignorant
The most striking thing in the verse is that it attributes the divergence to the last party one would expect: "and none differed about it except those who had been given it, after the clarifying signs had come to them." Neither ignorance is the tearer, nor the obscurity of the text; the tearers are the bearers of the clear sign themselves, and after its clarity, not before. The named cause is one: "out of overreach among themselves", not a shortfall in understanding but an excess in demand, the will to monopolize the text as a badge of authority among factions.
And this very diagnosis recurs whenever the Qur'an returns to the fracture among the people of the Book: ﴿وَمَا اخْتَلَفَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُ بَغْيًا بَيْنَهُمْ﴾ (3:19), and ﴿فَمَا اخْتَلَفُوا إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَهُمُ الْعِلْمُ بَغْيًا بَيْنَهُمْ﴾ (45:17). Three sites with one structure: divergence + the after-ness of knowledge + overreach. So the Qur'an establishes a rule, not a passing incident: knowledge, when paired with overreach, turns from a gatherer into a divider. What divides people is not a lack of proof but a surplus of greed, which is why the fracture is not healed by more clarification alone, but by abandoning overreach first.
Fourthly: Anthropological Conjectures and Projections
What follows is speculation. We could not stop ourselves from naming it and trying to explore it.
The verse describes a beginning of "one community," then a branching. This may accord with what is observed in the history of human society: the earliest small groups are simple in structure and close in orientation, not because they are of finer character, but because the smallness of number and the narrowness of the stakes reduce the materials of conflict. And the more the settlement expands and resources and positions accumulate, the more the materials of contention multiply, and with them the opportunities for overreach.
What is striking is that the verse does not hang the fracture on the expansion of settlement in itself, but on overreach. Growth alone does not divide; what divides is that the shared thing, the Book, knowledge, the unifying symbol, is turned into a tool of monopoly. Perhaps this explains why divisions often intensify around the most sacred of shared things rather than the most trivial: the greater the value of the unifying thing, the greater the temptation to monopolize it. And the verse leaves the way out open at its final end: "Then Allah guided those who believed … by His permission", not by a return to a first simplicity whose return has become impossible, but by abandoning overreach in the midst of complexity itself.
This is our attempt to read what is hidden from us; we make no claim to have reached what God truly said.
Et ﴿وَلَوْ شَاءَ رَبُّكَ لَجَعَلَ النَّاسَ أُمَّةً وَاحِدَةً ۖ وَلَا يَزَالُونَ مُخْتَلِفِينَ﴾ (11:118) dévoile que maintenir l'unité par force n'a jamais été le but ; la divergence est laissée comme un champ pour le choix, non niée par la contrainte.
