﴾ Are you then secure that He will not sink a flank of the land with you in it, or send against you something that pelts, and then you find for yourselves no keeper of your affair? ﴿
An interrogative hamza, then a connective fa tying the question to what came before it. So this is not a fresh opening. It is a consequence fastened to the turning-away of the previous verse. The verb is from ʾ-m-n, a joining to an origin that holds it and so keeps it, which is why security is the settling of the heart once it has reached what encloses it. But here the verb is attached to an with its clause, so what is at issue is security against something happening, not security in a place. You do not rest in the dry land; you rest in the assumption that the dry land will not do anything to you. And notice that the verse asks and gives no answer. It does not say "you are not secure," nor "yes, you are secure." The answer is left with the one questioned. A question that goes unanswered stays open in the listener longer than a statement stays.
The land in the previous verse was the place of the rescue. Here it is the place of the question. The danger has not been moved elsewhere; it has been set down in the very spot the foot settled on. The root kh-s-f is a thing's sinking into a hollow beneath it once whatever held it apart has come loose, and from it is said of an eye that it sank into its socket. So this is not a blow arriving from above; it is the withdrawal of what was underneath, and the thing goes down where it stands. The bāʾ in "with you" is the bāʾ of accompaniment: the ground does not give way and then you fall, you go down along with it in its going down. And the place is bounded: "a flank of the land," from j-n-b, a stretch that lies alongside something else and is never the whole of it. One flank is enough; the whole dry land need not be moved.
Then an indefinite active participle: something that pelts. Ḥ-ṣ-b is an abrading in a narrow passage from which fine grit scatters and is thrown, and from it ḥaṣbāʾ is small pebbles and ḥaṣabahu is to pelt him with them. The word carries no definite article, and it is given no time, no place, no attribute that would mark it off from anything else. It comes bare and indefinite, and the indefinite in such a position does a known work: it leaves the door open to everything the description fits. Whoever fixes it to one thing has narrowed what the verse widened. Set the two possibilities side by side: a sinking that comes from below, and a pelting sent from above. The aw between them leaves the choice of which occurs open, so the direction is not known either, and these two are both directions of the ground itself.
The thumma here does not mean "immediately after"; it marks a step further out in rank. The calamity is one thing; that you should search afterward and find nothing is a further thing. And read closely what is denied: "you do not find." W-j-d is a meeting that is actually made and then holds, not a notion in the mind. The negation falls on your hand coming to rest on him, not on there being anyone at all. You are searching, and the verse does not say the thing sought does not exist; it says you do not come upon it. And "keeper of your affair" is from w-k-l, a tie by which a matter is handed over to one who holds it and stands in the owner's place in it. The word runs four times through this sūra, affirmed once and denied three times, and this is one of the denials. The thread is read off that distribution: one holder is affirmed, and every other is denied to whoever went looking. Note also the "for yourselves" placed before the denied word: a keeper who is yours, who acts in your matter on your behalf. What is denied is not a holder in general but a holder attached to you. Whoever takes shelter on a flank of the earth might first ask who is holding the flank.
Two possibilities, both left unnamed, and one question left unanswered. What is denied at the end is not that a keeper exists, but that your hand will fall on one.
