﴾ Or are you secure that He will not send you back into it a second turn, and send against you something that snaps, out of the wind, and drown you for the covering you did, and then you find for yourselves no one to press the claim against Us for it? ﴿
Am joins a question to a question. The speech has not moved into statement; it has stayed inside the interrogative and grown a second branch. And the first is still unanswered. The matter is left open and another supposition is added on top of it, so the listener stands between two possibilities and is told nothing about either. One asked once and left silent may think he has escaped; asked a second time, he learns that silence is not an answer. The two suppositions differ in direction: the first makes the dry land itself the place of danger, while this one sends you back to the place you came out of. Both doors are shut: where you are, and where you were.
The verb is causative: "that He send you back," not "that you go back." The agent is not the one returning; the return happens to you, not from you. The root ʿ-w-d is a going back that fuses with a prior state and settles into it, and from it comes ʿāda, a habit, what has recurred until it holds. So the second place is not a new one; it is the first, refastened. As for the pronoun in "into it," this verse alone gives it no antecedent; it reaches back into what preceded, and the drowning that follows is what fixes it. Then "a second turn": a second implies a first, and the first is the one you were brought out of. In this setting the earlier rescue is counted rather than covenanted: one has passed, and it was not said to be the last.
Another indefinite active participle, preceded by "He send" exactly as the first one was. One and the same construction in both places, and two different directions: the earlier on land, this one at sea. Q-ṣ-f is a breaking that comes of a confined intensity, and the sound scatters off it; from it qaṣafa al-ʿūd is to snap the branch, and qaṣf is the loudness that goes with a snapping. So the description names an act you hear the effect of before you see it. And "out of the wind" states the genus, not the individual. What kind of thing it is has been said; which thing it is has not. Whoever fills that space with a particular episode narrows what was left wide.
No cause was given in the first supposition. Here one is: "for the covering you did," with the bāʾ of cause returning the act to what warrants it. And the word is the one that closed the verse two before: ﴿وَكَانَ الْإِنسَانُ كَفُورًا﴾. There it was a description being laid down; here it is an act being answered for, and it has moved from a general description of the kind to a deed fastened to those addressed by their own suffix, "you covered over." The root gh-r-q is a sinking that runs on until the way out is cut off above it, so drowning is not wetness and not falling into water; it is being taken under with the opening sealed. This verb too is causative: the one who sends you back is the one who takes you under.
Set the two closings side by side. There: ﴿ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوا لَكُمْ وَكِيلًا﴾, one attachment before the denied word. Here there are three: "for yourselves," "against Us," "for it." What was denied there is a holder who stands in the matter; what is denied here is a pursuer who follows up a claim. T-b-ʿ is a continuous coming-after that runs behind the thing it follows, and from it tabīʿ is one who keeps after his debtor for what is owed and does not let him go. The first is wanted before the event; the second, after it. And read the three attachments in their order: "for yourselves" fixes who wants him, "against Us" fixes whom the claim is brought against, "for it" fixes what it is brought over. Every direction is named, and then the one wanted is left indefinite and the finding of him denied. It is not said that the claim is dismissed. It is said that no one is found to raise it.
A second question laid on an unanswered first, and every road to a claim named except the one who would walk it. What kind of wind was said; which wind was not.
