Commentary
After the judgment at the end of the hundred and nineteenth verse on whoever takes the shayṭān for an ally, this verse returns to the shayṭān himself and describes what he does: "he promises them and fills them with wishes". The two verbs are imperfects free of the oath's lām and nūn, so what was an oath about the future in "I will surely fill them with wishes" becomes here a running work that is reported. The pronoun "them" goes back to those mentioned in his oath and in the judgment that followed it, and the wording leaves their bounds as wide as they are.
The verse holds a verb that was not in the oath: yaʿiduhum, "he promises them". Promising, waʿd, is from w-ʿ-d, a root that is a word held and then pushed toward a time to come, so it is a raising of hope by speech, by which the promiser binds the hearer's self to a thing that has not yet come. Yumannīhim, from m-n-y on the pattern faʿʿala, sends into them images they desire and toward which they stretch their longing: the promise gives them a word about something to come, and the filling with wishes gives them the image of that thing within themselves. The thirty-second verse forbade a wish that a person fastens on what is in another's hands; these are wishes that another makes within a person.
The verb is then repeated in a second clause, "the shayṭān promises them nothing but delusion", and there the doer is named outright where a pronoun would have served, so the judgment falls on the name itself. Mā … illā restricts the promise to a single thing, so it has no content other than delusion. Ghurūr, delusion, is from gh-r-r, a reality running hidden beneath a soft surface that tempts: from it come al-ghirra, heedlessness, al-ghirr, one who has not tried things, and gharrahu, he tempted him with what is false until he deceived him. Ghurūran, after illā, stands in the place of what is promised, or describes the promise itself, a deluding promise, and in either reading the promise ends in delusion.
This clause occurs in the Book in these very words twice: here, and after a command addressed to the shayṭān in another place, ﴿وَعِدْهُمْ ۚ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا﴾, "promise them; the shayṭān promises them nothing but delusion". The Surah said in the seventy-sixth verse ﴿إِنَّ كَيْدَ الشَّيْطَانِ كَانَ ضَعِيفًا﴾, "the scheming of the shayṭān has ever been weak": his scheme is weak there, and his promise is empty of content here. The roots m-n-y and gh-r-r come together in another place of the Book, ﴿وَغَرَّتْكُمُ الْأَمَانِيُّ﴾, "wishes deluded you", where the wishes themselves are what delude.
What faces this verse from both sides follows it: in the hundred and twenty-second verse a promise ascribed to Allah, "a promise of Allah, true", and in the hundred and twenty-third the root m-n-y comes back as a plural, ﴿لَّيْسَ بِأَمَانِيِّكُمْ وَلَا أَمَانِيِّ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ﴾, "it is not by your wishes, nor by the wishes of the people of the Book", after which requital is set on the deed: "whoever does ill will be requited for it". The Surah thus sets against the shayṭān's promise a true promise, and against the wishes a deed for which its doer is requited.
The verse returns to the shayṭān and describes his running work: he promises, from w-ʿ-d, a word bound to something to come that has not come, and he fills with wishes, from m-n-y, images he sends into others toward which their longing stretches; what he swore to has become a deed, and the promise is added to it. It then restricts his promise, naming him outright, to delusion, from gh-r-r, a reality sunk beneath a soft surface that tempts; the clause occurs once more in the Book in the same words, and it stands beside what the Surah said of the weakness of his scheming. After it come two verses that face it: a promise from Allah that is true, and a setting aside of wishes in which requital is set on the deed.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as saying that the shayṭān promises his followers long life and the getting of this world, and that there is no raising and no reckoning, and fills them with wishes of rescue and forgiveness while they stay as they are, and that his promise is a falsehood by which he deceives them and of which he keeps nothing.
A reading that fills the promise and the wishes with contents handed down: long hope, the denial of the raising, and rescue without deeds.
A root-reading
Yaʿiduhum (root w-ʿ-d): a word held and then pushed toward a time to come. Yumannīhim (root m-n-y): an image sent into the self toward which longing stretches. Ghurūran (root gh-r-r): a reality sunk beneath a soft surface. The verse becomes: "He binds their selves to something to come that has not come, and sends images into them toward which they stretch their longing; the shayṭān binds them to nothing but a soft outside under which the truth sinks from view."
A reading that hears the promise and the wish as two movements toward what is not present, and delusion as a surface that veils what lies beneath it.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names what the shayṭān promises and what he makes them wish for; the second hears in the roots the shape of promising, of wishing and of delusion before any of them is filled with a content. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Promising (w-ʿ-d) is an enclosing that grips a word and then pushes it toward a time to come; wishing (m-n-y) is a gathering held within that is sent out and stretches toward what is desired; delusion (gh-r-r) is a depth that runs hidden beneath the surface and is then clothed in a thin, soft outside. The letters draw three movements, all of them toward what is not yet present: a word pushed forward, an image stretching out from within, and a soft surface under which the truth sinks from view.
Second: the scene
The one who swore in the hundred and nineteenth verse to fill the servants with wishes is now seen at his work: he promises and fills with wishes, and those promised walk behind a word about something to come, with the image of that thing present in them before its time. Then the content is laid bare in a single clause: delusion and nothing else. In the next verse the road ends at a shelter from which there is no veering off, and after it stands another promise, ascribed to Allah.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
A person may be promised what he desires, and the image of what is promised may then stand whole within him, so that he settles into the image and sits back from the road that leads to it, for the wish gives him the taste of arriving before he has moved. The Surah answers this pattern in the hundred and twenty-third and hundred and twenty-fourth verses: "not by your wishes", then "whoever does ill will be requited for it", then "whoever does of the deeds that set things right", moving the weight from the image to the deed. The pattern recurs wherever a wish stands in the place of striving, or a promise becomes an end that one is content merely to hear.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
This may parallel what Gabriele Oettingen and Doris Mayer published in 2002, distinguishing two ways of thinking about the future: expectation, a person's judgment of how likely he is to reach what he wants, based on what he has experienced, and fantasy, pleasing images of the future that run through the mind. In one of the studies of that paper the two were measured in university students about to graduate and enter the job market, who were then followed up two years later: those who had indulged more in positive fantasies about their move into work had sent out fewer job applications, received fewer offers and were earning less. Perhaps the verse's joining of "he promises them" and "he fills them with wishes" falls on this very point: the image of the goal, when it is handed over ready-made, may spare its holder the road that leads to it.
The overall finding of that paper was that positive expectations went with more effort and more success, and positive fantasies with less effort and less success. The graduates' study rested on following the participants through time, without assigning them at random, so it shows an association and does not by itself show that the fantasy was the cause. Perhaps the difference they draw between a judgment resting on what one has tried of oneself and an image that stretches to the goal cut off from its road comes near what the verse describes when it restricts all that is promised to delusion: a soft outside that tempts, and beneath it a road that has sunk from view.
