Commentary
The verse opens with the relative alladhīna, "those who," and its tie to what precedes has two accounts: it may describe "the hypocrites" of the previous verse, standing in the accusative as they do, so that the verse completes their naming by stating their deed; or it may begin a new statement of blame, understood as "I mean those who" or "they are those who." On either account the description falls on those just named. Yattakhidhūna, "they take," is from ʾ-kh-dh on the pattern iftaʿala: taking a thing for oneself and making it into something else, which is why it governs two objects, "the ones who cover" and "allies"; the imperfect makes it a standing practice that renews itself.
Awliyāʾ is the plural of walī, from w-l-y: the walī is one who stands next to another with nothing between, draws close to him and takes charge of his affair, so those who take them make the ones who cover their next ones, and become theirs. "Short of those who give trust," min dūni al-muʾminīn, is from d-w-n: dūn is what lies lower than a thing and falls short of it, so the taking happens at a point where those who give trust are passed over for others. The words "the ones who cover as allies short of those who give trust" occur in three verses of the Book: as a prohibition to those who give trust in the twenty-eighth verse of Sūrat Āl ʿImrān, as a description of the hypocrites here, and then as a prohibition to those who have given trust in the hundred and forty-fourth verse of this Surah, "do not take the ones who cover as allies"; so the deed by which the hypocrites are described here becomes, in that verse, a prohibition to those addressed.
The question then comes with the hamza, "do they seek unassailable strength with them?", a question that rejects what it asks about and at the same time names what is sought through that taking. Seeking, ibtighāʾ, is from b-gh-y on the pattern iftaʿala: a seeking that fastens on something not yet reached and strains to arrive at it. ʿIndahum, "with them," is a word of presence and possession, and it makes the unassailable strength, in the question, a thing kept in the holding of the ones who cover, who are sought out so that it may be had from nearness to them.
Al-ʿizza is from ʿ-z-z, a root that names a fused hardness that nothing penetrates: arḍ ʿazāz is hard ground in which the foot does not sink, ʿazza al-shayʾu is said of a thing that has become hard to obtain, and ʿazzahu of one who has overcome another, as in the Book, "and he overcame me in speech." ʿIzza, then, is the state of one who is not overcome and whose side cannot be reached; in the question it is something sought with certain people, and the answer that follows returns it to the One whose it is.
The answer then comes with the fāʾ, "for unassailable strength belongs to Allah, all of it": the fāʾ gives the ground of the rejection and shows its point, and inna confirms it. The question said "with them," and the answer says "to Allah," so the strength has moved from a word of presence to the lām of what is due: what is sought with certain people belongs, in the answer, by right to another. Jamīʿan, "all of it," describes the strength as taken in whole, so what is sought with the ones who cover falls entirely within what belongs to Allah.
The sentence occurs word for word, without the fāʾ, in the sixty-fifth verse of Sūrat Yūnus, "unassailable strength belongs to Allah, all of it," and in the tenth verse of Sūrat Fāṭir the wanting of unassailable strength is joined to its answer as it is here: "whoever wants unassailable strength, to Allah belongs unassailable strength, all of it." When the Book returns to the hypocrites and unassailable strength in the eighth verse of Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn, it joins to the name of Allah His messenger and those who give trust: "to Allah belongs unassailable strength, and to His messenger and to those who give trust"; so the side passed over in this verse, "short of those who give trust," is named there among those to whom unassailable strength belongs.
The verse describes the hypocrites named before it by a standing deed: they take, from ʾ-kh-dh on the pattern iftaʿala, the ones who cover as allies, from w-l-y, who stand next to them and whom they draw close to, short of those who give trust, from d-w-n, passing over those who give trust for others, a deed that the Surah forbids in the same words in the hundred and forty-fourth verse. It then asks a question of rejection that names what is sought through this nearness: unassailable strength, from ʿ-z-z, a hardness nothing penetrates and the state of one who is not overcome, which they seek, from b-gh-y, with them. The answer moves the strength from "with them" to "to Allah," and "all of it" takes it in whole, so what is sought in nearness to the ones who cover falls entirely within what belongs to Allah, and those who give trust, passed over here, are named in another place of the Book among those to whom unassailable strength belongs.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read about hypocrites who took the Jews or the associators as allies, hoping that they would prevail, so that nearness to them would bring protection and standing; "do they seek unassailable strength with them?" is explained as "do they seek strength and support with them?". In explaining "unassailable strength belongs to Allah, all of it," it is reconciled with the verse of Sūrat al-Munāfiqūn: all of it belongs to Allah, and whoever Allah makes strong among His messenger and those who give trust has strength from His.
A reading that names those taken as allies, and makes the unassailable strength a prevailing and a support hoped for from them.
A root-reading
Yattakhidhūna (root ʾ-kh-dh): a readiness that reaches a thing until it has it for itself. Awliyāʾ (root w-l-y): those who stand next to another with nothing between. Dūni (root d-w-n): a rank that lies beneath another. A-yabtaghūna (root b-gh-y): a holding on that moves toward what has not been reached. Al-ʿizza (root ʿ-z-z): a fused hardness that nothing penetrates. The verse becomes: "Those who take for themselves the ones who cover as people of nearness who stand next to them, and leave those who give trust at a rank below them: do they strive for an unreachable hardness kept with these? That hardness belongs to Allah, all of it."
A reading that hears nearness as a means of borrowing what the one approached does not own.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names those taken as allies and makes the strength a hoped-for prevailing; the second hears, in the roots, a nearness taken in order to borrow a hardness whose ownership belongs wholly to Allah. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Taking, ittikhādh (ʾ-kh-dh), is a readiness that reaches a thing until it has it and takes it for itself; wilāya (w-l-y) is a joining that clings to what is next to it; dūn (d-w-n) is a rank that lies beneath another; seeking, ibtighāʾ (b-gh-y), is a holding on that moves toward what has not been reached; ʿizza (ʿ-z-z) is a fused hardness that nothing penetrates. The letters draw a hand that reaches out to take a nearness and seeks through that nearness a hardness not owned by the one approached; the answer then returns the whole of the hardness to the One whose it is.
Second: the scene
People stand between two sides, the side of those who have given trust and the side of those who cover over; they take the ones who cover as allies who stand next to them and whom they draw close to, and they leave those who give trust behind them. They go over to the other side as though seeking something kept with those who hold it, and a question meets them on the way: do they seek unassailable strength with them? The question is answered in the same verse: unassailable strength belongs to Allah, all of it.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
It recurs in communities that one who feels his place to be weak seeks a strength he can borrow from nearness to someone who looks strong: he announces his belonging to him and displays it often, and in doing so leaves behind those who were closer to him. The verse names in this conduct an error of place: the unassailable strength sought in the nearness of others belongs, in the answer, to Allah, all of it, so the nearness taken for its sake seeks what the one approached does not own. The pattern recurs wherever nearness to the strong becomes the measure of a person's worth, and the seeking of it grows whenever a person's standing is shaken in the eyes of others.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
"Do they seek unassailable strength with them?" may parallel what Robert Cialdini and his colleagues found in three field studies published in 1976 on what they called "basking in reflected glory": a person's announcing of his connection with someone who has succeeded, even when he had no hand in that success. In the first study, the clothing of students in introductory psychology classes was recorded at seven large American universities with strong American-football teams, every Monday over most of the 1973 season, and the wearing of clothes bearing the university's name or emblem was higher on the Mondays after the team's victories than on those after games that were not victories, while no such difference appeared in clothes bearing the names of other universities.
In the second study, 173 students at a large university took part by telephone: they were asked six questions about life at their university, half were then told they had answered well and half that they had answered poorly, and they were then asked to describe the outcome of a game their university's team had won, or of one it had lost. Among those told they had answered poorly, 40 percent used "we" in describing the win and 14 percent in describing the loss; among those told they had answered well, the two figures were 24 and 22 percent. The researchers held that people announce their connection with success to raise their image in the eyes of others, and that this grows stronger when that image is shaken. Perhaps "do they seek unassailable strength with them?" holds something close to this: a nearness announced in order to borrow what is seen with the one approached, and the close of the verse answers that what is sought through this nearness belongs, all of it, to Allah.
