﴾ those, they are the ones who cover, in truth. We have made ready for those who cover a humiliating punishment. ﴿
The verse brings what the verse before it was waiting for: there, a long description of a group by four verbs; here, a ruling on it in a few words: "those, they are the ones who cover, in truth". "Those" (ulāʾika) is a pointer that gathers the four descriptions into one word, so the ruling falls on the group with all it was described by, what they wanted and what they said. "They" (hum) is a pronoun of separation standing between "those" and "the ones who cover", which confines the name to them and strengthens it, and "the ones who cover" (al-kāfirūn) is made definite by the article, so they are the people of this name in full.
Covering, kufr, from k-f-r, is a cover laid on what is opening, sealing its outlet and lasting. The verse before described these people as saying "we give trust to some", and the name then comes here whole, with nothing of the trust they declared sharing in it. Trust in some with the cover over some does not move them to a rank between the two names; the verse places them in the name of the people of the cover.
Then "in truth" (ḥaqqan). Ḥaqq, from ḥ-q-q, is a thing's being fixed in its seat so that it does not budge; here it is a verbal noun in the accusative that confirms the content of what precedes it, the sense being: that is fixed, firmly fixed. The wording also allows ḥaqqan to describe an unexpressed covering, "a covering in truth", and the sense of the two is close. The verse thus fixes the name in its bearers so firmly that what they said does not budge it, and the word that closes the ruling comes from a root that means being fixed in one's seat: they are fixed in the covering beside which they wanted to find a way.
This construction has a counterpart in the Book, in the same words on the opposite side: "those, they are the ones who give trust, in truth", in two verses of Sūrat al-Anfāl, the fourth and the seventy-fourth, and "the ones who cover, in truth" occurs in the Book only here. The construction that fixes trust in its people there fixes covering in its people here, and those who wanted a place between trust and covering are set at one side by a word that has room for nothing else.
Then "We have made ready for those who cover a humiliating punishment". The speaker here uses the plural, "We have made ready", after the name of Allah had been mentioned in the third person in the verses before. Making ready, iʿtād, from ʿ-t-d, is a thing gripped and completed and then held present for its time, and the verb is in the past, so the punishment is prepared before its people reach it. "For those who cover" (li-l-kāfirīna) is a general name that comes after "the ones who cover" confined to "those", so the punishment is prepared for everyone the name falls on, and "those" are among them in the fullest sense.
Punishment, ʿadhāb, from ʿ-dh-b, is a grip from which pain passes and is held upon the one it takes, and it is described as "humiliating" (muhīn), from h-w-n, a lightness of worth that dwells within and then shows on the outside; muhīn is in the pattern mufʿil, a punishment that makes this lightness show on whoever it falls on. The phrase comes, whole and word for word, once more in the Surah, in the thirty-seventh verse, "We have made ready for those who cover a humiliating punishment", and occurs in this wording nowhere else. In this verse the humiliation comes after the wanting of a way that its people would take for themselves, so the way they wanted to take for themselves is met by a punishment made ready for them beforehand.
The verse gives its ruling on the group described in the verse before by four verbs: "those, they are the ones who cover, in truth". It gathers their descriptions in one pointer, confines the name to them by the pronoun of separation, makes it definite, and then fixes it with ḥaqqan, from ḥ-q-q, fixed in its seat so that the trust they declared in some does not budge it. The counterpart of the construction in Sūrat al-Anfāl is for those who give trust, so it fixes each side in its people. The verse then names a punishment that Allah made ready, from ʿ-t-d, for those who cover in general before they reach it, a punishment, from ʿ-dh-b, held upon its bearer, humiliating, from h-w-n, making his lightness of worth show; it is the phrase that closed the thirty-seventh verse of the Surah.
