﴾ Those who cover over Allah and His messengers, want to separate between Allah and His messengers, say, “We give trust to some and cover over some,” and want to take between that a way, ﴿
The verse opens with "those who" (inna alladhīna) and then describes them by four verbs joined by "and": they "cover over Allah and His messengers", "want to separate between Allah and His messengers", "say, 'We give trust to some and cover over some'", and "want to take between that a way". The verse ends and the sentence is not yet complete, so the ruling on these people comes in the verse that follows: "those, they are the ones who cover, in truth". The whole verse, then, is an extended description that shows the hearer the group by its acts before he hears its name, and the four verbs are in the imperfect, so the description draws a standing state that keeps renewing itself.
The first of the verbs is "cover over Allah and His messengers", and covering, kufr, from k-f-r, is a cover laid on what was opening, sealing its outlet and staying upon it. The verse begins by describing the whole of what they do before setting it out: they cover Allah and His messengers together, and it then reports that they say "we give trust to some". The verse thus counts what they do as a covering over Allah and His messengers together, even though they declare trust in part of it. "His messengers" comes in the plural, and in the hundred and thirty-sixth verse the Surah gathered Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers and the Last Day in the condition of covering; here it takes from that list its first and its fourth: Allah and His messengers.
Then: "and want to separate between Allah and His messengers". Wanting, irāda, from r-w-d, is a striving that stretches on, pressing toward what it aims at, so the separating is an end they strive toward, and the verse names it as a wanting and leaves its attainment open. Separating, tafrīq, from f-r-q, is a parting that runs through what was joined until each side stands apart from the other. Messengers, rusul, from r-s-l, is a connected going-forth that leaves one side and ends at another, where it attaches, so a messenger, by his root, is one end of a connected line that begins with the one who sent him. Whoever wants to separate between Allah and His messengers wants to cut this line in its middle: to take the Sender and leave those who came from Him, or to take some of the messengers and leave others, while the root itself makes what they want to cut a joined line.
Bayna, "between", from b-y-n, is an opening that brings what is within out into the open so that a thing stands apart from what surrounds it; it is the gap at which two things part. Bayna occurs three times across this verse and the hundred and fifty-second: "between Allah and His messengers", "between that", and "between any one of them". In the first it is the place of the cut they want, in the second the place of the way they seek, and in the third a gap that those who give trust did not open.
Their saying is then reported: "we give trust to some and cover over some". Baʿḍ, "some", from b-ʿ-ḍ, is a part that stands out from a whole and stays joined to it, so the word itself assumes a single whole from which the parts come, and they divide that whole between trust and covering. Baʿḍ comes both times with tanwīn, cut off from what it would be joined to, the tanwīn standing in for it, and the context points to what was cut off: some of the messengers, or some of what was mentioned of Allah and His messengers; the verse keeps the wording wide enough for both.
"We give trust" and "we cover over" stand side by side in one saying, with the same speaking "we" and the same bāʾ, so trust and covering come from one tongue in one breath. The Book has a question with the same two verbs in Sūrat al-Baqara, "do you give trust to part of the Book and cover over part?", where what is divided is the Book, and here it is Allah and His messengers; in both places the division falls on what came from a single source.
Then the fourth description: "and want to take between that a way". "That" (dhālika) points back to trust and covering, the singular demonstrative serving for two, as in "middling, between that". "Take" (yattakhidhū), from ʾ-kh-dh in form VIII, is a taking that the taker makes for himself, and a way, sabīl, from s-b-l, is a laid-out, open course travelled to its end. They want a course that they make for themselves in the gap between trust and covering. "Between that" came earlier, in the hundred and forty-third verse, describing the hypocrites: "dangling between that"; the place between the two sides is a place of swinging there, and here it is the place of a way someone wants to take.
"Between that a way" occurs in the Book in only two places: here, and in Sūrat al-Isrāʾ, "do not be loud in your ṣalāt (the continuous connection), nor sink it to nothing; seek between that a way", where the way "between that" is commanded, and its two sides are loudness and hushing, both of them manners of the voice. Here the two sides of the way are trust and covering, and the next verse names those who seek it "the ones who cover, in truth", so a way sought between the two is counted with one of its sides. This verse ends with "a way" (sabīlan), as do three verses before it in this passage, the hundred and thirty-seventh, the hundred and forty-first and the hundred and forty-third; in those three the way is denied, and here it is sought.
The verse describes a group by four verbs, and the sentence about it is not complete until the next verse: they cover over, from k-f-r, Allah and His messengers, laying the cover on them all; they want, from r-w-d, to separate, from f-r-q, between Allah and His messengers, and messengers, from r-s-l, are a line joined to the Sender, so the separating is a cut in what the root joins; they say "we give trust to some and cover over some", and "some", from b-ʿ-ḍ, is a part that stays joined to its whole; and they want to take between that a way, from s-b-l, a course in the gap between trust and covering. The phrase "between that a way" is commanded in Sūrat al-Isrāʾ when its two sides are two manners of the voice, and here it is blamed when its two sides have become trust and covering.
