﴾ He said: You have given him your trust before I gave you leave. He is surely your chief, the one who taught you the sorcery. I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will bind you up within the trunks of the palms, and you shall certainly know which of us is harsher in punishment and longer lasting. ﴿
One verse earlier they had said: "We have come to trust in the Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) of Aaron and Moses." The particle there was the bāʾ, and what it governed was a Rabb.
Here their saying is handed back to them: "You have given him your trust." The particle is the lām, and what it governs is the pronoun of a man.
So the particle changed and the governed word changed. The bāʾ delivers a resting to its place, whereas the lām assigns a thing to the one it is for; a saying about a Rabb was taken up and handed back as a saying about a man.
This is the first move of the verse: that they trusted is not denied, and their trust is carried over to someone other than the one they named.
The root ʾ-dh-n denotes a running-through that ends in a hollow which holds it; from it comes the ear, into which a sound runs and settles. Permission is the opening of a hearing to a matter so that the matter may pass.
The quarrel declared here is that they did not wait, not that they trusted. "Before" is an adverb of precedence, and what is named is that their act went ahead of his leave.
Whoever makes the dispute turn on the timing has conceded, without saying it, that the act does happen, and asks only that it happen at his word.
An emphatic particle stands at the head and an emphatic lām on the predicate. This is the same tightening of a sentence that was uttered earlier in this scene: "These two here are surely two sorcerers." The two fasteners come back, though there the first was the lightened in and its lām the distinguishing one. They fell upon two, and now they fall upon one.
The root k-b-r denotes a widening that comes out and runs on above its bound. "Your chief" is annexed to them: he is made of them and made theirs, and the man is bound to the company with a binding that makes their act his act.
The relative clause "the one who taught you the sorcery" then completes the binding. All of this is speech reported as it was spoken, and the verse says nothing about it after reporting it.
The lām of the oath and the heavy emphatic nūn stand on both verbs, and both are on the doubled pattern, the pattern that multiplies an event and distributes it over its places.
"On opposite sides" comes indefinite. The root kh-l-f denotes a thing falling into the place of a thing that has left it, so opposition is each limb falling where its fellow is not. This is what the wording says, and nothing is added to it.
"Within the trunks of the palms" comes with "in," not with "upon." "In" is the particle of place and gives containment inside, not elevation on a surface. The letter is read as it came, and no scene is described that the verse did not describe.
The root ṣ-l-b denotes a hardness on which whatever is hung upon it holds fast; from it comes the ṣulb, the column of the back on which the body stands. What is stated is the fixing of a thing upon something hard that does not give.
A third oath follows, and what is sworn to is a knowing, not a doing: "you shall certainly know." The matter is deferred to a knowledge that will come to pass.
"Which of us" asks after one of two parties, and a single pronoun has already gathered the two. He has set himself and another in two pans, and he has not named the other party.
Two comparatives follow: "harsher in punishment," with a specifier that shows in what respect the harshness lies, and "longer lasting," with no specifier at all. The first measures what falls now, and the second what stands after that.
The root b-q-y denotes a fixity that extends on after the going of whatever went. He said it inside a scale he set up himself, and he chose its wording himself.
This very wording will be said again in this scene.
Their saying is handed back with its particle changed: they said "we have come to trust in" about a Rabb, and it is said "you have given him your trust" about a man. The trusting is not denied; its place is moved. The quarrel is then tied to the time, not to what was said: "before I gave you leave," and ʾ-dh-n is a running-through that ends in a hollow which holds it, so permission is the opening of a hearing to a matter. The two emphatic fasteners that were spoken in this scene upon two come back and now fall upon one; "your chief" is annexed to them and so bound to them, the relative clause completes the binding, and the speech is reported, not ruled upon. Next come two oaths with a lām and a heavy nūn, two verbs on the doubled pattern for distributing, "on opposite sides" indefinite, with kh-l-f as each limb falling where its fellow is not, and "within the trunks of the palms" with the "in" of place, not with "upon." The letter is read, and what the verse did not describe is not described. A third oath then promises a knowing, not a doing; "which of us" gathers the two parties into one pronoun without naming the other; and two comparatives follow, a harshness measured now and a lasting measured after it. He set the scale up with his own hand and chose its wording, and this wording will be said again in this scene.
