❮ Those who spend their wealth in the way of God, then do not follow what they spent with reminder-of-favor or injury: their reward is with their Lord, and no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve. ❯
n-f-q, the spending itself: a repetition that carries a task
The verse comes back to the wording "spend their wealth in the way of God" that the verse before it used inside its likeness. This repeating is not ornament but structure: the verse before described the yield of the sown field with no moral restriction upon it, and this verse returns to the same doer in order to lay the restriction down. The multiplying by seven hundred is not released to every spender, but to the one whose spending came through safe from the two blights, the reminder of favor and the injury.
t-b-ʿ, the work of "then" and of the following-up
The root t-b-ʿ in "do not follow" points to a thing that comes after another thing in time, not to an act standing on its own. And "then," in its sense of a loose interval, means that the stretch of time between the spending and the following-up is left open: a day may pass, or a month, or a year, and then comes the wounding remark or the weighing reminder. The Quran fortifies the giving across time, and not at the instant alone. The truthful spender does not spoil his gift after a while with a word that comes down upon him out of his own memory.
m-n-n, the reminder of favor: a recalling of merit that turns the scales over
M-n-n, set inside a giving, turns into its own opposite. When it comes from God it is a blessing; but when a human uses it toward another human in the setting of a gift, it becomes a weapon of reminding by which the giver establishes his own merit and makes the one given to feel his lowliness. The reminder of favor, then, is no crime in the word itself, but in the social position: the created being reminds another of what was never his own to begin with, and so spoils the giving.
ʾ-dh-y, the injury: a wound of meaning, not of matter
The root ʾ-dh-y in this setting does not carry a grave harm but a light hurt: a word, a look, a remark, a gesture. The choice of sense is exact: the Quran did not say "wrong" and did not say "harm," because the blight of giving is not the great deeds but the small cuts that gather in the memory of the one given to until they wipe out the trace of the blessing. Injury here is the spoken opposite of doing well.
The reminder of favor and the injury as a pair that completes itself
The text couples the reminder of favor with the injury because the two cover two fields: the reminder lifts the giver above the one given to, and the injury brings the one given to down beneath the giver. They are two motions in one direction: the fixing of a social ladder where the giving was supposed to be the erasing of that ladder. A gift that carries either of the two is no longer a gift; it becomes a re-manufacture of the differences.
ʾ-j-r with r-b-b: the place of the reward, not its time
"Their reward is with their Lord" moves the place of the settlement, and not its time alone. "With" is an adverb of place, and "their Lord" points to the sustaining, the raising and the tending and the standing over. The reward is kept in a location outside the social order. And this cuts the problem of the reminder at its root: if the reward is with the Lord, then any reminder of favor in the dwelling of people is the asking of a doubled wage, once with God and once in the eyes of humans, and that undoes the very structure of "in the way of God."
kh-w-f with ḥ-z-n: the lifting of the feelings that come after the giving
"And no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve" are two clauses describing the state of the truthful spender after his giving. Fear is the looking ahead to an ill that is coming, and grief is the sorrow over what has gone. The spender who reminds, or who injures, lives inside both: he fears to lose the standing he built upon the mention of his merit, and he grieves over the wealth every time he sees the one given to failing to thank him in a way that pleases him. So the lifting of fear and grief here is not only the promise of a garden, it is an immediate release of the soul that comes the moment the tongue is held back from following the gift.
"In the way of God" as a guarantee against the reminder of favor
The repeating of "in the way of God" is no verbal surplus but the logical ground for the lifting of the reminder. Whoever spent in the way of God aimed at God and not at the human, and the reminder of favor uncovers that the human had been the aim from the start. So the reminder that comes after the spending is a trace left behind that testifies about the intention that preceded it, not an event standing on its own: it shows that "in the way of God" had been a wrapper over the way of the self.
The equation of giving in the wording of the verse
The verse in its bare shape: a spending, plus the following-up, plus (no reminder of favor and no injury), equals reward, plus safety, plus ease of heart. Any flaw in the materials voids the result. And this is exactly what makes the spending a work of formation and not an act of charity alone: the spender works upon himself before he works upon the one given to.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the role of "the giving after which the tongue falls silent" precedes the role of "the announced and recorded donation," and the role of "the reward held in place with the Lord" precedes the role of "the recovering of standing in the social arena."
Result
Here is the moral condition that brings the likeness of the sown field in the verse before to life: the spending on its own is not enough. "Then," in its loose interval, uncovers that the danger stretches out in time: a day may pass, or a month, and then comes the wounding remark. The reminder of favor, m-n-n, is a recalling of merit that sets the giver above the one given to, and the injury, ʾ-dh-y, is a light wound of meaning that gathers in the memory. Both turn the giving into a re-manufacture of the social ladder that the spending had been erasing. And "their reward is with their Lord" cuts the reminder at its root: if the reward is with the Lord, then reminding people of the favor is the asking of a doubled wage and the undoing of the structure of "in the way of God." The close, "and no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve," uncovers an immediate effect in the soul: fear, kh-w-f, is the looking ahead to what is coming, and grief, ḥ-z-n, is the sorrow over what has gone, and both are the dwelling of the spender who reminds, because he lives in the fear of losing his standing and in the grief of the ingratitude of the one given to. The freeing from the reminder of favor is no deferred virtue; it is a release of the soul in the present.
