﴾ The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of God is as the likeness of a grain that sprouted seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains. And God multiplies for whom He wills, and God is vast, knowing. ﴿
m-th-l: a likeness, not a comparison
"The likeness of those who spend ... is as the likeness of a grain." The root m-th-l is at base the standing in the place of a thing, or the resembling of it in an attribute. And the mathal of the Quran is finer than a comparison: a comparison holds to one chosen point held in common, while a mathal carries a whole structure across. So "the likeness of those who spend" does not mean "those who spend resemble a grain in such and such a respect," it means "the structure of spending is the structure of a sown field." This is a shift of concept: spending is not an immediate material loss, it is a sowing inside a growing order.
n-f-q and m-w-l: the spending that runs all the way through
"They spend their wealth." The root n-f-q is at base the nafaq, the tunnel that runs beneath the ground. From it anfaqa is said of wealth: to put it out until nothing of it is left. And m-w-l at root is what one leans toward and loves, that to which the soul attaches itself. The meeting of the two roots gives an exact sense: the putting out of what the soul is attached to, until it has run through. And the verse did not say "they give" but "they spend," because a gift may come out of a surplus that was never loved, while spending takes in the beloved as well.
"In the way of God": the qualifying restriction
"In the way of God" is a restriction that cannot be stepped past. A sabīl, from s-b-l, is at root a trodden road. The likeness does not cover every spending, only the spending that walks the way of God. And "the way of God" is a gathering expression: it holds everything in which there is a face turned toward God. So the qualifying restriction keeps the likeness inside what has a divine face, and outside any spending that is merely consumption or merely of this world.
ḥ-b-b and n-b-t: the grain as a unit of meaning
"As the likeness of a grain." The root ḥ-b-b carries two senses that complete each other: love, and the seed. Both name a nucleus out of which things multiply. "Sprouted" is from n-b-t, at root the climbing of a plant up out of the ground. The doer of "sprouted" here is the grain itself, not the sower. The point is telling: the grain "sprouted," as though it were the one that performed the sprouting, though sprouting is a divine law. It is as if the verse hands the merit to the grain and not to the sower, to make plain that the one who spends is a link in a chain whose merit ends with God by way of His law of the sown field.
s-b-ʿ and s-n-b-l: a yield that begets
"Seven ears." The number seven in the old Semitic usage tells of completeness and abundance, not of an exact count. Spread over seven ears means that the single seed brings forth a whole frame, not merely copies. An ear, sunbula, from s-n-b-l, is a distinct unit of harvest that carries grains of its own. The move from a grain to an ear to further grains is a move of two stages: first a change of kind, from a grain to an ear, and then a doubling of quantity, in every ear a hundred grains.
"A hundred grains": the inner count of each ear
"In every ear a hundred grains." A hundred is a large number in old Arabic usage, saying an abundance that takes in what it holds. The final yield is seven times a hundred, seven hundred grains. This reckoning is no fixed recompense; it is a model that shows. And the verse goes on to state as much: "And God multiplies for whom He wills," so seven hundred is an approximate measure and not a ceiling. Whoever counts his spending by multiplying it by seven hundred and expects that number has gone wrong: what is meant is that the structure of growth reaches this level, not that the number itself arrives.
ḍ-ʿ-f and sh-y-ʾ: the open multiplying
"And God multiplies for whom He wills." The root ḍ-ʿ-f is at base an accumulated strength, and from it ḍiʿf, the like of a thing added to itself. Yuḍāʿif is of the form that says a doubling repeated time after time. The sense: He may multiply seven hundred into a thousand, into two thousand, and further. And the willing, sh-y-ʾ, sets the measure outside the reckoning of the one who spends: no one can claim that his spending has earned a stated sum. This wording breaks the logic of trade outright: in trade the value is fixed by the agreement of two parties, and here the value is fixed by the choice of one party, and that party is God.
w-s-ʿ and ʿ-l-m: the composite close, given as a reason
"And God is vast, knowing." W-s-ʿ at root is width and room, and the name "the Vast" tells of the width of the bounty and of a giving that does not run out. ʿ-l-m tells of the grasp of intentions and of aims. Joining the two attributes yields a complete equation: the Vast owns what He multiplies, and the Knowing knows who deserves the multiplying. Were He vast without being knowing, His giving would be arbitrary; were He knowing without being vast, His giving would be bounded. And the order is meant: first the width, because the power is the condition of the giving, then the knowledge, because the telling apart comes after the power.
The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the role of "the seed that sprouts of itself" precedes the role of the commercial bargain, and the role of "the open multiplying that hangs upon a will" precedes any picture of a closed recompense counted out in numbers.
Result
The mathal, m-th-l, is not a comparison but the carrying across of a whole structure: spending, n-f-q, is not a financial loss but a sowing inside a growing order. "As the likeness of a grain that sprouted seven ears, in every ear a hundred grains": the grain, ḥ-b-b, sprouts of itself, so the merit is ascribed to it and not to the sower, because the one who spends is a link in a chain whose merit ends with God. The restriction "in the way of God" belongs to the substance: it holds the likeness to the spending that has a divine face, and not to any spending whatever. The yield is seven hundred, and it is no ceiling: "And God multiplies for whom He wills," so the multiplying, ḍ-ʿ-f, stands open by a will that does not submit to the reckoning of the one who spends. And the verse closes upon a pair that supplies the reason: vast, w-s-ʿ, who owns what He multiplies, and knowing, ʿ-l-m, who knows who deserves the multiplying. Were the Vast without knowledge, His giving would be arbitrary; were the Knowing without width, His giving would be bounded.
