Commentary
The verse moves from the witness borne to what was sent down to people standing on the other side, opening with inna and a relative whose clause is two past verbs, the second joined to the first by wa: "have covered over and turned away." Covering, from k-f-r, is a veil that closes the outlet of appearing and stays over what is beneath it; the verb comes absolute, with no object, so it describes the state they are in, and the context sets it beside what Allah bore witness to in the verse before. That verse closed with "and Allah suffices as a witness," and at the head of this one comes kafarū; the two verbs share their k and f and part at the third letter: there, a sufficiency that stops the need for another witness; here, a veil that stops the outlet of appearing.
Ṣaddū, from ṣ-d-d, is a hard push that turns one who is heading somewhere away from his direction and stands firm before him. The verb comes both intransitive and transitive: ṣadda ʿanhu, he turned away from it himself, and ṣaddahu ʿanhu, he turned another away from it. It comes here with no object expressed, so the wording allows both that they turned away from the way of Allah themselves and that they turned others away from it, and both readings stand together. Before this verse the root came in three verses of the Surah: "among them are some who turned away from it" in the fifty-fifth, "turning away from you, a turning right away" in the sixty-first, and wa-bi-ṣaddihim ʿan sabīli llāhi kathīran in the hundred and sixtieth, the last with the very same phrase, "from the way of Allah."
The way of Allah, sabīl, from s-b-l, is an open, drawn-out channel travelled towards its end, and its attachment to the name of Allah marks it by the One to whom it belongs. The turning away in the verse falls, then, on an open route: a hard push that stands before a road left unclosed, whether the one who turns away turned himself from it or turned others.
The predicate of inna is the sentence "have strayed," and qad with the past fixes the straying as something that has taken place and is complete. Straying, from ḍ-l-l, is a going out into an open, spread expanse in which the one who goes out flows on with nothing to hold him, until the landmarks of his route vanish from him. The verse thus names first an open road that was turned from, then an expanse with no landmark in which those who turned away ended.
The verb is then made firm by its own verbal noun, ḍalālan, and the verbal noun is described by baʿīdan, "far off," so it is an absolute object (mafʿūl muṭlaq) that sets out the kind and the measure of the straying: the verb establishes that they strayed, and the described verbal noun turns their straying into a distance that can be measured. Farness, from b-ʿ-d, is a position that has passed beyond nearness and become fixed behind it, so their straying lies at a point that has passed beyond the nearness of the road and become fixed beyond it. The verse keeps a proportion between what they did and what they came to: the turning away is a push away from the road, and what they ended in is a fixed distance from it.
Ḍalālan baʿīdan occurs in the Surah four times, and this is the last. It came in the sixtieth verse as the absolute object of a leading astray that the shayṭān wants, "and the shayṭān wants to lead them astray, a straying far off"; it came in the hundred and sixteenth and the hundred and thirty-sixth as the answer to a condition with man, "has strayed, a straying far off," a ruling hung on anyone who does what the condition names. Here it comes as a report about a group known by what they did, so the far straying moves, within the Surah, from something the shayṭān wants, to a conditional ruling, to a fact established by qad in people known by their deeds.
The verse describes people by two deeds: covering, from k-f-r, a veil that closes the outlet of appearing, coming after a verse that closed on a sufficiency sharing its k and f; and turning away, from ṣ-d-d, a hard push that may be their own turning aside or their turning of others, falling on the way of Allah, which is, from s-b-l, an open channel that is travelled. It then reports of them "have strayed," straying, from ḍ-l-l, being a going out into an expanse with nothing to hold one, made firm by its verbal noun and described by farness, from b-ʿ-d, so that it becomes a distance fixed beyond the road. This is the fourth and last place of ḍalālan baʿīdan in the Surah, and in it the far straying, which was first wanted by the shayṭān and then a conditional ruling, becomes a report of fact about people known by what they did.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as about the People of the Book mentioned in the verses before it: they covered over the Prophet and what was sent down to him, and turned people away from Islam by concealing what their books contained of his description; others apply it to anyone who joins covering over to keeping others from the dīn. Most read ṣaddū as transitive: they kept others away.
A reading that names the people, and makes the turning away a keeping of others from the way.
A root-reading
Kafarū (root k-f-r): a veil that closes the outlet of appearing. Ṣaddū (root ṣ-d-d): a hard push that turns one from one's direction, falling on oneself or on another. Sabīl (root s-b-l): an open channel that is travelled. Ḍallū ḍalālan (root ḍ-l-l): a going out into an expanse with nothing to hold one. Baʿīdan (root b-ʿ-d): a position that has passed beyond nearness and become fixed behind it. The verse becomes: "Those who closed the outlet of appearing and stood before an open road, turning themselves or others back from it, have gone out into an expanse with no landmark, and have become fixed at a point far beyond the road."
A reading that hears in the verse an open road turned from, and a distance that becomes fixed after the turning.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names the people and reads the turning away as a keeping of others; the second hears, in the roots, a veiling and a turning from an open road that end in a fixed distance. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Covering, from k-f-r, is a closing that holds back what was opening through a narrow slit and stays over it; turning away, from ṣ-d-d, is a hard hold that pushes back what comes towards it and then stands firm as a barrier; the way, from s-b-l, is a drawn-out channel that opens for the one who travels it; straying, from ḍ-l-l, is a going out into an expanse with nothing to hold one; farness, from b-ʿ-d, is a position that has passed beyond nearness and become fixed behind it. The letters draw a single movement: an outlet closed within, a barrier raised on an open road, then a going out into a space where the one who went out stays far off.
Second: the scene
People let down a veil, then stand at an open road and turn from it, themselves or others. Then they are looked at, and they are in a wide space with no landmark, the road at which they stood now far from them. The verse sets the beginning and the end side by side: the turning away in the relative clause, "have strayed" in its predicate, and the walk between the two folded away.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
Whoever stands at a road and turns people away from it needs reasons to tell them, and then finds himself settled behind what he said, so that it becomes hard for him to take a road from which he turned others. It recurs in groups that the person farthest from a matter is the one who made turning people from it his business. The verse sets the turning from the road beside the far straying from it, and the one who turns others away ends, in the verse, at a distance from what he turned them from.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
If ṣaddū is read as transitive, that is, they turned others away, its pairing with "have strayed, a straying far off" may parallel what Irving Janis and Bert King found in 1954 in an experiment with university students: each was asked to play the role of a sincere advocate of a view assigned to him on a given question, one that might not match his own conviction, and to give an unscripted talk built from an outline he was handed, while fellow students listened to his talk. The speakers' opinions moved towards the view they had defended more than the listeners' opinions did, on two of the three questions tested. Perhaps the one who argues so as to turn others from a road persuades himself before them, and moves away from the road as far as he moves others from it.
