Commentary
Sight returns to a second scene of the passage: "have you not looked at those who". The people of the forty-fourth verse were known by what they were given; these are known by what they do to themselves: "they purify their own selves". Tazkiya, from z-k-w, is a store packed inside a thing that stretches out from it so that it grows and becomes clear, and the doubled form yuzakkūna attributes this growth and clearness to what the verb falls on: it may be a making-to-grow, or a testimony to soundness, as a witness is vouched for. What the verb falls on here is "their own selves", so the witness and the one witnessed for are the same people: they testify, and they are testified for.
The Book forbids this act in one other place and gives its reason: ﴿فَلَا تُزَكُّوا أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ﴾, "so do not purify your own selves; He knows best who guards himself". Tazkiya is a testimony that needs knowledge of what is inside, and the growth the root means is packed within, seen by the One who knows the within; whoever testifies for himself testifies in a matter that another knows better.
Then the verse turns, with bal, "rather", from their act to the act of Allah, and the verb returns in the same form, yuzakkī, "purifies", with Allah as its doer and "whom He wills" as what it falls on. The purifying they claim for themselves is, in the verse, the act of Allah, who brings it upon whom He wills. The phrase comes in the same words in another place, after mention of the favour and mercy of Allah: ﴿وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ مَا زَكَىٰ مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَبَدًا وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ يُزَكِّي مَن يَشَاءُ﴾, "were it not for the favour of Allah upon you and His mercy, not one of you would ever have grown pure, but Allah purifies whom He wills"; there growth is a favour and a mercy from Allah, without which no one would have grown pure.
Man yashāʾu, "whom He wills", joins this verse to the one before: there "He covers what is short of that for whom He wills", here "Allah purifies whom He wills", so covering and growth both go back to the will. One who purifies himself claims for himself what the verse places in the will of Allah, and judges for himself in a matter that was not given to him.
The verse closes with "they will not be wronged by so much as a thread". The verb is in the passive, which leaves its doer unnamed, and its plural "they" may refer to those who purify themselves, who lose nothing of their due even if their claim is turned back, or to those whom Allah wills to purify, who are denied nothing of their right; the wording has room for both groups. Ẓulm, from ẓ-l-m, is a screening that holds a right back from its owner, and fatīl, from f-t-l, is fine strands wound one over another until they become a thread, among the finest things by which a measure is taken.
The Surah measures the denial of wrong by the finest quantities in more than one place: ﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَظْلِمُ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ﴾, "Allah does not wrong the weight of a speck", in the fortieth verse; fatīl here and in the seventy-seventh; and ﴿وَلَا يُظْلَمُونَ نَقِيرًا﴾, "they will not be wronged by so much as a pit-mark (naqīr)", in the hundred and twenty-fourth. The reckoning to which the verse refers the claim of those who purify themselves reaches the thread: what is claimed adds nothing to it, and what is refused of the claim takes nothing from it.
The verse shows a second scene of looking: people who purify their own selves, tazkiya, from z-k-w, being the attributing of growth and clearness to what the verb falls on, so that the witness and the one witnessed for become one; the Book forbids this in another place, since Allah knows best who guards himself. It then turns, with "rather", to the same act with Allah as its doer, who brings it upon whom He wills, and so meets the verse before it, which tied covering to the same will. It closes by denying wrong to a group the wording extends both to those who purify themselves and to those whom Allah purifies, measured by a fatīl, from f-t-l, a thread of wound strands, in a Surah that measures the denial of wrong by the speck, the thread and the pit-mark.
Commentaire
L'expression revient dans les mêmes mots en un autre endroit, après la mention de la faveur et de la miséricorde d'Allāh : ﴿وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ مَا زَكَىٰ مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَبَدًا وَلَٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ يُزَكِّي مَن يَشَاءُ﴾, « n'eussent été la faveur d'Allāh sur vous et Sa miséricorde, nul d'entre vous n'aurait jamais été pur, mais Allāh purifie qui Il veut » ; la croissance y est une faveur et une miséricorde d'Allāh, sans lesquelles nul ne serait devenu pur.
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as being about the Jews and Christians who said ﴿نَحْنُ أَبْنَاءُ اللَّهِ وَأَحِبَّاؤُهُ﴾, "we are the children of Allah and His beloved", and who claimed that their faults would be forgiven them; some relate that they would bring their small children forward and say that these had no faults, and that they themselves were like them. The fatīl is taken as the thread in the groove of a date-stone, or the dirt rolled between the fingers.
A reading that names those who purify themselves by a people and a claim, and measures the fatīl by what is in the date-stone.
A root-reading
Yuzakkūna (root z-k-w): attributing growth and clearness to what the verb falls on. Anfusahum (root n-f-s): their living selves. Yuẓlamūna (root ẓ-l-m): the screening of a right from its owner. Fatīlan (root f-t-l): fine strands wound into a thread. The verse becomes: "Do you not see people who testify to their own growth? Growth is given by Allah to whom He wills, and not a thread's worth of anyone's right is held back from him."
A reading that returns testimony to the One who knows the inner, and keeps the balance fine.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names those who purify themselves and their claim; the second hears, in the roots, a growth that is given and a balance that reaches the thread. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Tazkiya (z-k-w) is a store pressed within that stretches out as growth and clearness; nafs (n-f-s) is an inner held within, from which something runs out; ẓulm (ẓ-l-m) is a screening that holds a right back from its owner; fatīl (f-t-l) is fine strands wound until they become a thread. The letters place growth in an inner reached by the One who knows the inner, and set against it a reckoning that reaches the finest of threads.
Second: the scene
People stand before their own selves as a witness stands before a judge, and testify for them to clearness and growth; then a single word turns the scene, "rather, Allah": the one who purifies becomes another than they, and the one purified becomes whom He wills. At the end of the scene a fine balance remains, from which not a thread falls, keeping for the claimant his right even when his claim is turned back.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
In individuals and in groups it recurs that a person writes his own testimony with his own hand: a group that names itself the chosen and the saved, an individual who keeps a record of his good deeds to present whenever he is called to account. The higher the self's testimony for itself rises, the less it hears from others, since witness, the one witnessed for and judge have become one. The verse takes the testimony out of its owner's hand and returns it to the One who knows the inner, and at the same time assures that turning a claim back takes not a thread from the right.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
"They purify their own selves" may parallel what social psychology calls the "better-than-average effect": most people see themselves as above average in desirable qualities, which can hardly be true of the majority at once. It may meet what Nicholas Epley and David Dunning found in studies published in 2000 under the title "Feeling 'holier than thou'": participants expected to behave more generously and more fairly than others, the actual behaviour of people placed in the same situation fell short of what they had predicted for themselves, and their predictions for others came closer to what happened.
If the parallel holds, there may be in ﴿هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اتَّقَىٰ﴾, "He knows best who guards himself", something that meets this finding: a person is a weaker witness in his own case than in the case of others. Researchers also describe what they call "moral licensing": one who calls up his own good image may afterwards allow himself what he used to refrain from; perhaps this is among what the verse hints at when it lifts the reckoning from the self's claim to a balance from which not a thread falls.
