Commentary
The command is aqim, "set upright," not "pray." The verb comes from standing erect, on a pattern that carries the standing over to something other than the one who stands, so what is commanded is that the prayer be set up as a post is set up.
Performing a thing differs from setting it upright: a performance takes place and is over, whereas setting upright leaves something standing after its doer. "The prayer," al-ṣalāt, is a concept with its own entry in the glossary, to be consulted there, and it is not analysed again here.
The same root returns in the next verse as a noun rather than a verb: ﴿مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا﴾. A setting upright is commanded here, and a place of standing is mentioned there; the act lies in the hand of the one addressed, while the place does not.
The term al-dulūk, "the slipping off," is from d-l-k, a root whose base sense is a pressure that passes in contact with a thing and then slips loose of its place. The expression dalaka al-shayʾa is used when a thing is worked under the hand with weight pressed upon it, and it is seen to pass and go.
So the time is fixed by an event in the sun itself rather than by a number: its pressing passage until it slips loose of the place it occupied. The verse does not name that place.
The lām in li-dulūk is the lām of time, as in the expression laqītuhu li-thalāthin khalawna, "I met him when three nights had gone." So it marks the starting point from which one sets out, not the end at which one arrives.
Ilā, "to," draws a limit, and the stretch between the two ends becomes a distance rather than a point. It began on a movement, and on a movement it ended.
The term al-ghasaq, "the settled dark," is from gh-s-q, denoting a flowing cover that settles after it has flowed. The expression ghasaqa al-laylu is used when the night's darkness has run and then held still. So darkness is poured until it fills, rather than laid down.
The two ends of the stretch are, then, a sun slipping loose of its place and a darkness running until it settles. Neither limit mentions a number or the name of an hour; what is mentioned is two acts that can be seen. Time in this verse is something looked at, and so known.
Qurʾāna, "the gathered recital," is in the accusative and is joined to "the ṣalāt," not to the time. So two things are commanded: a prayer set upright across a stretch of time, and a gathered recital named at a limit.
The name, moreover, has changed: what was called a prayer at the head of the verse is called a recital at its close. The new naming brings one face of the first forward over another, without cancelling it.
The term al-qurʾān is from q-r-ʾ, a joining that closes together and is then released as one gathered whole; al-fajr, "daybreak," is from f-j-r, a split out of which what was held breaks forth and then runs. So the construction joins a word of gathering, in annexation, to a word of splitting, and speech is gathered at the hour when the darkness splits.
"The gathered recital of daybreak" is the one element of the verse repeated in its own words. Had brevity been intended, the verse would have said "it has always been attended"; the repetition places the weight where it falls.
The word mashhūdan, "attended," is an indefinite passive participle: attendance is affirmed of the recital while the one attending goes unnamed. The verse keeps complete silence about the witness, and that silence belongs to what it says.
It is joined to kāna, "has always been," so it is neither a promise to be awaited nor a state that comes about. It is a settled description that preceded the command, and the command did not bring it into being: the one addressed is commanded to something already attended before he himself attends it.
The command is to set upright, not to perform: aqim, on a pattern that carries the standing over to something other than the one who stands, so that the ṣalāt is left standing as a post is. The time is then fixed by two happenings that can be seen, not by a number committed to memory: a sun that passes, pressing, until it slips loose of its place, and a darkness that runs until it settles where it rests, with ilā making what lies between them a distance, not a point. A second thing is then joined to what is commanded, not a second time: "and the gathered recital of daybreak," so that the name changes from prayer to recital, and a word of joining falls in annexation to a word of splitting. The phrase is then repeated letter for letter, and what is repeated is described as mashhūdan, "attended," in the indefinite, so that attendance is affirmed and the one attending is not named; and its joining to kāna makes it a description prior to the command, not a trace of it. What was attended before the addressee does not wait for his attendance to become so.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as gathering the times of the five prayers: "the sun's dulūk" as the starting point, taking in the midday and afternoon prayers; "the night's ghasaq" as the end point, taking in the sunset and night prayers; and "the gathered recital of daybreak" as the dawn prayer, named after the reciting in it because the reciting there is long. There is disagreement over dulūk, whether it is the sun's turning past midday or its setting. And mashhūdan is read as an attendance witnessed by the angels of the night and the angels of the day as they change over, on the basis of a well-known transmitted report.
A reading that distributes the verse over the prayer times and identifies the witness by a transmitted report.
A root-reading
Aqim is causative, from standing upright, so what is asked is that the ṣalāt be set standing and not merely performed, and the same root returns as a noun in the next verse. Dulūk (root d-l-k) is a pressure that passes in contact and then slips loose of its place, so what fixes the time is a visible event in the sun and not a number to be counted, and the lām is the lām of time marking a start. Ghasaq (root gh-s-q) is a flowing cover that settles after flowing, and ilā makes what lies between the two limits a distance rather than a point. Qurʾāna (root q-r-ʾ) is a joining that closes and is released as one whole, and it is coordinated with "the ṣalāt," so two things are commanded; al-fajr (root f-j-r) is a splitting out of which what was held breaks and runs. And mashhūdan (root sh-h-d) is an indefinite passive participle joined to kāna: a settled attendance whose attender is not named.
A reading that takes both limits as acts one can see, and stops at the indefiniteness of "attended" without naming the attender.
The two readings do not conflict. The first divides the stretch into times and names the witness; the second hears in the roots the movement of both limits and leaves the indefinite indefinite. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

The command is to set upright, not to perform. What is performed happens and is over; what is set upright is left standing after the one who set it. Then the timing arrives with no number and no name of an hour: two happenings that can be looked at, a sun slipping off its place, and a dark that pours until it settles. And "to" makes what lies between them a stretch and not a point. A time known by looking, not by counting.
Then a second thing is joined to what is commanded, and not a second time to the times. The name changes: what was called a prayer at the head of the line is called a gathered recital at its end. And the word of drawing together is set upon the word of breaking open. Speech is gathered at the hour the dark is split.
And one thing alone in the line is repeated in its own words, and repetition puts the weight where it falls. The attendance is affirmed and the one attending is not named, and "has always been" sets the description before the command. What is commanded was attended before the one commanded came to it. The silence about who attends is part of what the line said.
Perhaps there is something to be heard in the fact that both limits are things the eye can check with nothing in the hand. For most of what is known of human living, the day was divided by what the sky does and not by what a made device points at, and the devices came later and were referred back to the sky rather than taking its place. A time built on two motions that can be seen binds to no one place and needs no craft: wherever the sky is open, the appointment can be kept. It may be that the hour named at the close, the hour of the splitting, is the quickest hour of the day to change before the eye, so that a gathering set there is set at a sign that announces itself. This is a speculation offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse commanded an uprighting, named two limits that can be seen and a second commanded thing, and affirmed an attendance whose attender it did not name, and settled none of this.
