﴾ He said: Then go. Yours, in the life, is to say: no touching. And yours is an appointment that will not be failed with you. And look upon your god, to which you kept cleaving: we shall surely burn it, then scatter it into the water, an utter scattering. ﴿
Going, in dh-h-b, is a passing through emptiness that ends in a departure from one's place. The form is a singular imperative, tied by the fāʾ of immediate sequence to the answer that came just before it.
That same imperative has stood in this Surah before, in "go to Pharaoh," where it was made transitive by the particle "to" and its end-point was named.
Here it comes with no "to" and with no end-point whatever: a verb of parting, with no direction mentioned in which to part.
"Yours" is a prepositional phrase fronted into the predicate slot, and its lām is the lām of assignment. What comes after it is something made his and referred to him.
What is made his is a verbal noun built from the subordinating particle and a verb: "that you should say." So what is made his is a saying he will say, not a blow that falls upon him and not a barrier set between him and something.
Then "in the life," with the article alone, rather than "this life" or "the nearer life." The word is left bare of everything that would bound it.
Touching, in m-s-s, is a light meeting that runs along a surface and does not sink in; from this material comes the word for the least that can pass between two bodies.
The negative here is the one that denies a whole kind. It works upon the verbal noun, and so lifts the entire class, not one instance of it.
What is lifted is the lowest thing in the field, not the highest. Whoever has the lowest lifted from him has what lies above it lifted without its being mentioned, and this is the completeness of the ruling, in two words.
"Yours" occurs a second time, so what is made his is two things: a saying he will say and an appointment he will await.
This material has run three times through this sitting. It was said to the people, "so you failed my appointment"; they said, "we did not fail your appointment"; and here it is said, to one man, that he has an appointment that will not be failed with him.
Failing, in kh-l-f, is a gap that stretches between two parties and pushes the one away from the other. The verb here is built without a named agent and denied with the strongest denial of the future: there is no gap in this appointment, and who will keep it is not mentioned.
The people said in this sitting, "this is your god," with the possessive of a group, and the verse now says "your god," with the possessive of one man. The word is one, and the annexation has passed from the many to the one.
The people said "cleaving to it," in the plural form, whereas here it is said "you kept cleaving to it," in the singular. The preposition is one, the noun is one, and the number is two.
The verb ẓalla, in ẓ-l-l, denotes a covering that closes over a thing and takes hold of it, then extends over it, spreading; from this material Arabic says of one who ẓalla doing a thing that he continued at it through his day. One of the two lāms is dropped in the script, and the script is the script and is read as it stands.
Both verbs carry the lām of the oath and the heavy emphatic nūn, and Arabic has nothing stronger than this for affirming a promise.
Between them stands "then," rather than the simple conjunction. The second comes after the first, not along with it, and the ordering is spoken rather than supposed.
Burning, in ḥ-r-q, is a confined heat that runs and cuts through the structure of whatever it passes, and it comes on the faʿʿala pattern of multiplying. Scattering, in n-s-f, is an issuing that runs out at length and then has its parts divided and driven apart; from this material comes the name of the winnowing tray by which the grain is parted from its husk.
"A scattering" is a verbal noun confirming its own verb. This very build, the verb together with its verbal noun, falls in this Surah upon the mountains: "my Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) will scatter them, an utter scattering." One root and one form appear in two places.
"Into the water" is the very word that has run twice before in this Surah: "then cast him into the water," and then "there covered them, out of the water, what covered them." There are three places and one word; the adjacency is noted, and no place is described and none is identified.
A command to part, from dh-h-b, a passing through emptiness that ends in a departure from one's place, comes here with no "to" and with no end-point mentioned, though it occurred earlier in this Surah directed toward a terminus named outright. Then "yours" twice, with the lām of assignment: a saying he will say and an appointment he will await are made his. The first is a verbal noun built from the subordinating particle and a verb, so the penalty is made of speech, not of body, and "in the life" carries the article alone with no qualifier to bound it. "No touching" denies a whole kind in m-s-s, a light meeting that runs along a surface and does not sink in, so the lowest thing in the field is lifted, and what lies above it goes with it unmentioned. The second is an appointment that will not be failed with, from the material of kh-l-f, which has run three times through this sitting as a charge, a reply to it, and then a promise with no gap in it; the verb here is built without a named agent and denied with the strongest denial of the future. The two pronouns then pass from a plural to a singular: the possessive of "your god" moves from the many to the one, and "cleaving" moves from the plural form to the singular, while the preposition stays the same in both places. ẓalta, from ẓ-l-l, is a covering that closes over a thing and takes hold of it, then extends over it, spreading, one of its two lāms dropped in the script, and it is read as it was written. The close consists of two verbs with the lām of the oath and the heavy emphatic nūn, with "then" between them rather than the simple conjunction, so the second is after the first and not with it: a burning, from ḥ-r-q, on the pattern of multiplying, then a scattering, from n-s-f, a dividing that drives the parts apart, with its confirming verbal noun. This is the build the mountains take in this Surah, in its verb and in its verbal noun, and the water is the water that ran twice through it before.
