﴾ And nothing held Us back from sending with the signs except that the earlier ones belied them. And We gave Thamūd the she-camel, one that sees, and they wronged by her. And We do not send with the signs except to make fear. ﴿
The verse opens on a restriction and closes on a restriction. The first confines the withholder to one thing; the last confines the purpose to one thing. Between them stands a place where a sending actually happened. And the withholder is not an incapacity or an exhausted power. It is the act of a people who came before: "that the earlier ones belied them." The root m-n-ʿ turns on a holding in the interior that is gripped so that nothing gets out, so what is named is a standing barrier, not a supply run dry. And "the earlier ones" are not named. No name, no era. They are described by their precedence in time rather than by their lineage, and by their act rather than by their place. The argument is in the precedence, not in the identity.
It is not said "that We send the signs." It is said "that We send with the signs." The preposition fastens the sent one to what he is sent with, so the signs are carried alongside the messenger and are not themselves the thing dispatched. The root r-s-l is a letting-run that stays hung on the one who let it run, so the sent does not come loose from his sender nor from what he was loaded with. Then read the same letter in what follows. "They belied by them," not "they belied them." Then "so they wronged by her," not "they wronged her." Three verbs in one verse, and each of them carries a preposition tying it to the signs: a sending by them, a belying by them, a wronging by them. The same letter passes from hand to hand. One is sent with the sign and carries it; another belies by it and pushes it back; another wrongs by it and puts it to use. The instrument is one and the hands change. What you are given to carry, you may carry the wrong way up.
The verse names Thamūd and names the she-camel, and they are mentioned exactly as far as it mentions them. Of their affair it says only two things: they were given her, and they wronged by her. What lies between the two is not in the line.
And mubṣiratan is a circumstantial description of her, an active participle and not a passive one. It is not mubṣara. She is the one that makes seeing, not the one seen. This very word passed earlier in this same sūra, describing something of an entirely different kind: ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا آيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً﴾, "and We made the sign of the daylight one that sees." There, daylight; here, a she-camel. The two kinds do not meet, and the description is one, letter for letter. What joins them is that each is a sign. The word "signs" occurs three times in this verse, so the she-camel is placed inside the very class being spoken of, and given the description already given to the sign of the day. A sign sees and is not seen: it makes the looker look, it is not the thing gazed at. Whoever stands admiring a sign has turned an active participle into a passive one.
Then a clause of two words, with a connective that follows the giving without an interval, and the one wronged is not mentioned. The object is dropped and the preposition is kept. Had it said "they wronged her," the wrong would have fallen on her. Saying "by her" makes her the one in whose regard and by whose means the wrong occurred, and leaves the wronged party without a name. The text stops here, and the reading stops with it. The root ẓ-l-m is a film that veils and clings to what it has covered. So half a line holds two facing descriptions: one that makes seeing, and a wronging that veils. They were given what opens the eye, and they drew something over it.
The last restriction says the purpose. Not persuasion, not compulsion, not the closing off of excuses. It says takhwīfan, a verbal noun in the accusative giving the reason for the act. Fear at its root is an inward hollowing into which the threat passes, and this form is the causing of that hollow in another. So the sign is sent to open a gap in what was closed, not to fill it. What enters the gap once it is open is the affair of the one it was opened in. Which is why the next verse states what happens when nothing enters: ﴿وَنُخَوِّفُهُمْ فَمَا يَزِيدُهُمْ إِلَّا طُغْيَانًا كَبِيرًا﴾. The act is the same in both places; the outcome waits on the ground it falls into.
The same preposition carries the sending, the belying, and the wronging: one instrument, changing hands. A sign is sent so that you may see by it, not so that you may stand and look at it.
