﴾ The Jews said the Christians stand on nothing, and the Christians said the Jews stand on nothing, while they recite the same Book. In the same way, those who do not know said a thing like their saying. ﴿
The wording is a complete negation with no portioning in it. Neither side said the other was partly right or partly in error; each denied the other "anything", indefinite, which in this construction covers the whole ground. The pattern goes past a dispute over rulings and into total cancellation. The verse is not describing a difference over one piece of a creed; it is describing a practice in which the worth of the other side falls away entirely. And there the criticism lands: a just mind separates the rejection of a particular error from the cancellation of the whole party, and whoever crosses over into total cancellation has left criticism behind and entered enmity.
The root t-l-w is a following piece by piece, with holding. "While they recite the same Book" is a clause of circumstance with a reproach folded into it. Reciting requires the following of every piece of the Book, and a reader is bound to arrive at pieces in which the other side and its connection are mentioned. For one of the two sides to recite a text in which the other is named and then to say that the other stands on nothing is a contradiction inside the act of reciting itself. The argument here comes back on the reader and not on the text: the Book was followed through, and the fault lies in the mind that followed it without taking it in.
"In the same way, those who do not know said a thing like their saying" is a structural move and not a rhetorical one only. Those who do not know are a kind with no book at all, and they have said the same thing as the people of the Book. The levelling uncovers that holding the Book is not enough if it does not come back out in the act. Carrying the Book is a function and not an identity, and whoever carried it and did not work by it has landed in the same column as the one who never carried it, and under a heavier reproach at that, since a larger argument stands against him. This is a rule that holds for every carrier of a book after them.
The root kh-l-f is one thing hanging on after another, and out of it come both succession and difference. The eighth form, yakhtalifūn, indicates a sharing between two sides, each of them setting himself behind the other. The verse did not say that they cover each other over, and did not say that they show enmity; it said that they differ, and that is an exact classification of the real state. They come at origin from one school, and their difference is over branches that get magnified. The Book carries a gathering origin, and the difference has its seat in the branches and not in the roots.
"God will judge between them on the day of standing up, in what they were differing over." The one who judges on that day is the same one to whom the ownership of the heavens and the earth belongs in verse 107, and the same one who measures every thing in verse 106. The sequence holds together: whoever owns the running order owns the settling of what was disputed inside it. The verse does not hurry the ruling into this world; it refers it to the place where things come clear. And what the referral means is that the difference is not settled by one party gaining the upper hand here, but by the pattern showing itself at the close. Whoever grasps this settles down out of the attempt to force an early verdict, and is freed for his own work.
The word precedes the term and the role precedes the identity: "stand on nothing" is a total cancellation that has gone past criticism, reciting is an argument that comes back on the reader when it does not change him, carrying the Book is a function and not an identity, and the settling of a difference is the role of the one who owns the running order.
From the root n-ṣ-r the helpers inherited their name as a support that passes through and extends; the name carries a function and not a signboard. But the verse uncovers that the carrier of a name may let go of its function, and he does so when he ends at "stand on nothing", a wording of complete negation with no portioning in it and no acknowledgement of a part. What sharpens the argument is that both sides recite the Book, and from the root t-l-w reciting is a precise following piece by piece that takes in what it follows; whoever truly recited was bound to reach pieces that name the other side and its connection. With that, reciting turns into an argument against the reader and not against the text. Then the verse levels the people of the Book with "those who do not know" in one and the same saying; holding the Book does not raise its holder as long as it does not come back out in his act. And from the root kh-l-f it appears that the standing difference is each party hanging on to a gap that opened after its own separation from a shared origin, and not a divergence in the first roots. So the settling is referred to the one who owns the running order, from the root ḥ-k-m: a cleaning up of the difference by firm binding, then a gathering of the settlement into a day that has an edge to it, from the root y-w-m, a day in which matters close up after their long extension. The function comes before the signboard, reciting is an argument that returns upon its carrier, and the settling of every difference between the heirs of one origin belongs with the owner of the running order.
