﴾ Allah does not cover the making of a partner with Him, and He covers what is short of that for whom He wills. Whoever makes a partner with Allah has strayed, a straying far off. ﴿
The rule that came in the forty-eighth verse returns in this one, word for word up to "whoever makes a partner with Allah has", and then the two closes part. Here it stands between a verse about one who follows other than the way of those who give trust and verses after it about what is called upon besides Allah. Ghafr, covering, is from gh-f-r, a cover cast over a thing that wraps it and keeps it safe, and what is kept from it is "that a partner be made with Him", a verb whose doer is folded away, so the withholding falls on the deed itself. Ishrāk, the making of a partner, is from sh-r-k, hands gathering on one thing until they interlace in it, and what is kept from the cover is setting beside Allah a partner who enters into what admits no division.
The same verb is then affirmed: "and He covers what is short of that for whom He wills". Dūna, from d-w-n, is what lies at a rank beneath another, so "what is short of that" is everything that comes below the making of a partner, and the cover over it is tied to the will. The root returns in the next verse with another face: ﴿إِن يَدْعُونَ مِن دُونِهِ إِلَّا إِنَاثًا﴾, "they call, besides Him, on nothing but females", where min dūnihi, "besides Him", is what is taken instead of Allah. The one root, in two neighbouring verses, thus places what is "short of" the making of a partner where the cover tied to the will reaches, and places what is called upon "besides" Allah where the making of a partner itself lies.
The doer then appears in "whoever makes a partner with Allah", and his answer here is "has strayed, a straying far off". Ḍalāl, straying, is from ḍ-l-l, a traveller who goes out into open space and drifts in it until the road is lost to him; ḍalla is a verb that takes no object and falls on its doer, ḍalālan, from the same word, follows to strengthen it, and baʿīdan, "far off", describes its reach. Buʿd, farness, is from b-ʿ-d, a position that has passed beyond nearness and holds fast behind it, so the one who makes a partner goes on through open space until he settles in a place beyond the nearness of the road. The same root in the verse before is time, "after the guidance has become clear to him", and here it is distance.
With this the verse parts from its twin in the forty-eighth verse, whose close is ﴿فَقَدِ افْتَرَىٰ إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا﴾, "has fabricated a great burden": the verb there falls on a made thing that its maker carries, while the verb here takes no object and describes the course of the one who does it. The rule is one in both places, and the two closes look at the making of a partner from two sides: what the one who does it makes and then carries, and where he ends up on his road. This second side suits what surrounds the verse here: before it, a way left, another followed and an end come to; after it, what the shayṭān says in the hundred and nineteenth verse, ﴿وَلَأُضِلَّنَّهُمْ﴾, "and I will surely lead them astray".
Ḍalālan baʿīdan, "a straying far off", in this wording belongs to this Surah within the Book, and comes in it four times: in the sixtieth verse, ﴿وَيُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَن يُضِلَّهُمْ ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا﴾, "and the shayṭān wants to lead them astray, a straying far off"; here; in the hundred and thirty-sixth, about whoever covers over Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers and the Last Day; and in the hundred and sixty-seventh, about ﴿الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوا عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ﴾, "those who have covered over and barred from the way of Allah". The farness in its first place is what the shayṭān wants for people who wish to take their case for judgment to the ṭāghūt; here it is a state that the one who makes a partner with Allah comes to; and the next verse names the shayṭān among what is called upon besides Him: ﴿وَإِن يَدْعُونَ إِلَّا شَيْطَانًا مَّرِيدًا﴾, "and they call on nothing but a rebellious shayṭān". The far straying in this Surah is thus joined to the mention of the shayṭān: in its first place within the same verse, and in this place in the verse that follows.
The verse returns to the wording of the forty-eighth verse up to "whoever makes a partner with Allah": covering, from gh-f-r, a cover that wraps and keeps safe, is withheld from the making of a partner, which, from sh-r-k, is setting beside Allah one who enters into what is His, and it is spread over "what is short of that" for whom He wills, the root d-w-n returning in the next verse for what is called upon besides Allah. The close then parts from its twin: there, a fabrication made and carried; here, a straying, from ḍ-l-l, that falls on its doer and carries him along, described by farness, from b-ʿ-d, a distance by which he has passed beyond the nearness of the road, so the close suits what surrounds it, a way, an end and a leading astray. "A straying far off" is a wording that belongs to this Surah, coming in it four times; its first place is joined to the mention of the shayṭān within the same verse, and this place in the verse that follows.
Ḍalālan baʿīdan, « d'un égarement lointain », en ces termes, est propre à cette sourate dans le Livre, et y vient quatre fois : au soixantième verset, ﴿وَيُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَن يُضِلَّهُمْ ضَلَالًا بَعِيدًا﴾, « et le shayṭān veut les égarer d'un égarement lointain » ; ici ; au cent trente-sixième, au sujet de quiconque recouvre Allāh, Ses anges, Ses livres, Ses messagers et le Jour dernier ; et au cent soixante-septième, au sujet de ﴿الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوا عَن سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ﴾, « ceux qui ont recouvert et barré le chemin d'Allāh ».
