﴾ O you who have believed, spend from what We have provided you, before a day comes in which there is no selling, no close friendship (khulla), and no intercession. And those who cover over are themselves the wrongdoers. ﴿
"O you who have believed" is addressed to one who has already owned belief, not to one who covers it over. The Qurʾan reaches for this call when it means to turn a belief from a matter held in the mind into a deed done with the hands. The verse says: if you are one who believes, an affirmation is not enough for you; a deed done with property is required of you, and it is required before the window closes.
N-f-q is at root the nafaq, the passage that runs under the ground; from it comes anfaqa, to put property out until nothing of it is left in hand. R-z-q is a giving that comes on and on. "Spend from what We have provided you" sets two limits together: the property you spend is not yours at root, it is a provision granted to you; and the spending is partial, "from", and not entire. The wording keeps apart the one who truly owns the property and the one who carries it for a while.
"Before a day comes" is a condition set in time. Q-b-l names what stands in front of a thing and not behind it. "Before" here establishes that the spending has a window with an edge, and that once the edge is passed the door is shut for good. The verse does not name death outright, yet the day meant is the day of standing, or the moment of death that sorts a person toward that day.
It did not say "the day of standing", it said "a day", with no article. Leaving it indefinite here works as a magnifying and a dread. A day whose name is not given and whose hour is not fixed falls heavier than a day that has been named. The self holds no power over it, neither to fix it nor to put it off. This is a way the Qurʾan keeps to whenever it means to call the outcome to mind without handing over a calendar.
B-y-ʿ is the trading of goods for a price. "In which there is no selling" says that the machinery of ransom by property, which people lean on in this life to push a penalty away, does not run on that day. Property spent now to buy off a judge, or to pay a blood price, or to purchase a freedom, is worth nothing there. The verse is speaking to the economics of rescue as the human mind holds it.
Kh-l-l is at root the gap between two things; from it comes khalīl, the friend who has run into the cracks of your heart until he is inside them. Khulla is the deepened friendship that goes past acquaintance. What the verse cancels is not general friendship alone; it reaches the nearest circle of all. The friend you leaned on cannot ransom you.
Sh-f-ʿ is at root the joining of one to one until they are two. An intercession is the joining of the one who speaks to the one spoken for, so that they stand as two before a higher authority. The denial here is bounded: other verses establish an intercession by God's leave for one He is pleased with. What is denied here is the intercession that stands on its own without leave, and not every intercession. And the order of the three, selling, close friendship, intercession, is deliberate: from the gain of goods to the gain of feeling to the gain of office. Every worldly instrument of rescue is struck out.
"And those who cover over are themselves the wrongdoers" binds the two words with the separating pronoun "themselves", which fixes the matter to them alone. Wrongdoing is not only an aggression against another. Its root, ẓ-l-m, is the setting of a thing somewhere other than its place. The one who covers over sets his denial somewhere other than its place: he denies the giver who provided for him, and he holds back the spending that would have rescued him. He wrongs himself before he wrongs anyone else.
K-f-r is at root a covering and a screening; from it the farmer is said to kafara the seed when he buries it under the soil. "One who covers over", in the Qurʾan's usage, is one who has covered a favour by denying it. In this setting, which is the setting of spending, the covering has a plain face turned toward property: it is the withholding of the spending, whether the right of it is granted in theory or denied in practice. The verse is not using "one who covers over" in its later doctrinal sense alone; it is using it of the one who denies the favour of provision, the one who looks at his own spending and sees a loss.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the role of "spending before the window closes" precedes the role of leaning on selling, on close friendship and on intercession; and the role of "denying the favour" precedes the naming of anyone a coverer, for wrongdoing in this verse is defined by property set outside its place before it is defined by aggression against another.
A call aimed straight at the one who has owned belief, not at the one who covers over, and aimed at turning an affirmation held in the mind into a deed done with property before the hour is gone: "spend from what We have provided you". "Spend" is from n-f-q, at root the nafaq, a passage running under the ground with no coming back along it the same way: a putting out with nothing held back inwardly for return. "From what We have provided you" sets two limits together: the property is a provision given, from r-z-q, and no original possession; and the spending is "from", partial and not entire. Then the edge in time: "before a day comes". "A day" is left indefinite for magnifying, and what is neither named nor dated presses harder than what is fixed. And that day strikes out three machineries the self leans on for rescue in this life: "no selling", from b-y-ʿ, and the ransom by property falls; "no close friendship", from kh-l-l, and the friend who ran into the cracks of your heart avails you nothing; "no intercession", from sh-f-ʿ, and the mediation that stands on its own without leave falls. The order is deliberate: from the material to the affectionate to the official. Then it closes with a decisive stroke: "and those who cover over are themselves the wrongdoers". The separating pronoun fixes the matter to them alone. "Those who cover over" here are the deniers of the favour of provision, who look at their spending and see a loss. "The wrongdoers", from ẓ-l-m, the setting of a thing somewhere other than its place. Wrongdoing begins with the self before it reaches anyone else.
