Commentary
Then a third condition with man takes up the verb of the previous verse, "earns", and gives it two objects with aw between them: "a deed that misses the mark or a burden". Khaṭīʾa is from kh-ṭ-ʾ, a root that is a reaching that ends out of its place, like an arrow that lands off the target; from this root came khaṭaʾan in the ninety-second verse, a killing that falls on what was not intended, and elsewhere khiṭʾan, for a killing that is intended: ﴿إِنَّ قَتْلَهُمْ كَانَ خِطْئًا كَبِيرًا﴾, "killing them is a great khiṭʾ". Khaṭīʾa, on the pattern faʿīla, names the deed by its having gone off its mark, and it meets earning in ﴿بَلَىٰ مَن كَسَبَ سَيِّئَةً وَأَحَاطَتْ بِهِ خَطِيئَتُهُ﴾, "whoever earns something bad and is encompassed by his khaṭīʾa", where the khaṭīʾa surrounds its earner and does not leave him.
Ithm (burden), from ʾ-th-m, is a weight that stays on the doer from his deed and slows him, the very thing the previous verse restricted to its earner's self. The two names thus name what the hand draws in from two sides: khaṭīʾa by the deed's going off its mark, ithm by the weight it leaves in its doer, and aw makes each of them open what follows on its own. The khaṭīʾa stays open in the verse to what was intended and what was not, and the two names alone are what the verse gives of the difference between them.
Then a second deed after the earning: "then throws it at one who is clear of it". Throwing, ramy, is from r-m-y, a root that is what runs held within the palm and is then let go toward its goal; the bāʾ of bihi, "it", fastens the verb to what is thrown, and the one thrown at is barīʾan, "one who is clear of it". The Book uses this verb for casting a charge on another: ﴿وَالَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ الْمُحْصَنَاتِ﴾, "those who cast charges at the fortified women". The pronoun in bihi is singular after two nouns joined by aw, and it may refer to the burden, as the nearer of the two; or to whichever of the two it is, since aw makes what is earned one of them; or to the earning implied by "earns". The three ways meet in this: what is thrown is the very thing that was earned.
Barīʾ is from b-r-ʾ, a root that is a going out of a thing that carries on until what lay between them is cut: bariʾa min al-dayn is to become clear of a debt, and baraʾa min al-maraḍ to part from an illness. The verse thus names the one thrown at by a name that bears witness to his having come out of what is thrown at him, and the earning that the hundred and eleventh verse restricted to its earner's self is what the thrower tries here to pass on to a person who did not earn it.
The answer to the condition is "has taken up", and qad with the past, in the answer to a condition, makes the taking up certain: it happens with the throwing itself. Iḥtimāl is from ḥ-m-l on the pattern iftiʿāl, a root that is a thing drawn to its bearer, who lifts it and goes on with it, and iḥtamala is to lift a load onto oneself and shoulder it; the Book has ﴿فَاحْتَمَلَ السَّيْلُ زَبَدًا رَّابِيًا﴾, "the torrent carried a swelling foam", that is, the torrent lifted it on its back and went on with it. The one who threw what he earned out of his hand has become, in the wording of the verse, one who lifts a load onto his back.
What he carries is two things: buhtān, from b-h-t, a falsehood that stuns the one faced with it, so that he stands bewildered and finds no reply, here what the one clear of the deed was faced with, a deed he did not do; and "a manifest burden", mubīn being an active participle of abāna, a burden that shows itself and lays bare the one who bears it. The verse began with "a deed that misses the mark or a burden", two names with aw between them, and ended with "a falsehood that stuns and a manifest burden", two names joined by wa: what was one of two things has become two things together, and the burden that was earned has become manifest. The same pairing came in the twentieth verse of this Surah, ﴿أَتَأْخُذُونَهُ بُهْتَانًا وَإِثْمًا مُّبِينًا﴾, "would you take it by a falsehood that stuns and a manifest burden?", and it came with the same verb in ﴿بِغَيْرِ مَا اكْتَسَبُوا فَقَدِ احْتَمَلُوا بُهْتَانًا وَإِثْمًا مُّبِينًا﴾, "for what they have not earned, they have taken up a falsehood that stuns and a manifest burden"; earning is present in both verses: there, harm falls on those who have not earned it, and here, an earning is thrown at one who did not earn it.
The verse brings a third condition with man, taking up the verb of earning from the previous verse and giving it two objects with aw between them: a khaṭīʾa, from kh-ṭ-ʾ, a deed that has gone off its mark, and an ithm, from ʾ-th-m, a weight that stays in its doer. The earner then throws what he earned, from r-m-y, at one the verse names barīʾ, from b-r-ʾ, one who has come out of what is thrown at him, and so tries to pass on what the hundred and eleventh verse restricted to his own self. The answer is that he has taken up, from ḥ-m-l, lifting onto his back a buhtān, from b-h-t, a falsehood that stuns the one clear of the deed, and a manifest burden that shows itself. The verse begins with one of two things joined by aw and ends with two things joined by wa, and what the earner threw comes back on him doubled.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as about the thief who cast his theft on an innocent man, in some accounts a Jewish man and in others a Muslim known for his uprightness. A distinction is drawn between khaṭīʾa and ithm: the khaṭīʾa is what is done without intent, or the lesser fault, and the ithm what is done deliberately, or the greater; others hold that the khaṭīʾa is what stays with its doer and the ithm what reaches another.
A reading that identifies the thrower and the one thrown at in a related incident, and tells khaṭīʾa and ithm apart by intent or by size.
A root-reading
Khaṭīʾatan (root kh-ṭ-ʾ): a deed gone off its mark. Ithman (root ʾ-th-m): a weight that stays in its doer. Yarmi (root r-m-y): what is held in the palm and then let go toward its goal. Barīʾan (root b-r-ʾ): one who has come out of a thing, with what lay between them cut. Iḥtamala (root ḥ-m-l): to lift a load onto oneself. Buhtānan (root b-h-t): a falsehood that holds the one it is thrown at over an emptiness where no reply comes. The verse becomes: "Whoever draws to himself a deed gone off its mark, or a weight, and then lets it go toward one who is out of it, has lifted onto his back a falsehood that stuns the one thrown at, and a weight that shows itself."
A reading that hears the throwing as an attempt to pass the load on, and the taking up as its answer: two loads in the place of one.
The two readings do not conflict. The first identifies the thrower and the one thrown at and tells khaṭīʾa and ithm apart by intent or by size; the second hears, in the roots, a hand that lets go of what it earned and has it come back heavier, and a name that bears witness to the one thrown at having come out of what was thrown. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Earning (k-s-b) is a hand stretching to a thing and drawing it to its owner; khaṭīʾa (kh-ṭ-ʾ) is a reaching that ends out of its place; ithm (ʾ-th-m) is a weight that piles up in the doer and slows him; throwing (r-m-y) is what is held in the palm and then let go to run toward its goal; the barīʾ (b-r-ʾ) is one who has come out of a thing until what lay between them was cut; taking up (ḥ-m-l) is lifting a load onto the back; buhtān (b-h-t) is a falsehood that holds the one it is thrown at over an emptiness where he finds no reply. The letters draw a hand that draws a weight to its owner, then lets it go toward another, and then its owner finds a heavier load on his back.
Second: the scene
A man carries something he has earned, a deed off its mark or a burden; he looks round, finds a man free of it, and throws it at him. The one thrown at stands stunned before a deed he did not do, and the thrower goes on with the load gone from his hand, while the verse shows him two loads on his back: a falsehood that stuns, which he threw at another, and a burden that has become manifest.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
It recurs in every community that a person, pressed by what he has earned, looks for someone to carry it for him. The verse keeps in this pattern two opposite reckonings: the thrower's, who sees the load gone from his hand, and the verse's, which sees him as having taken up more than he was carrying. Whenever an innocent is charged with what he did not earn, a falsehood that stuns is added to the first burden, and the burden becomes manifest.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
This may parallel what Zachary Rothschild, Mark Landau, Daniel Sullivan and Lucas Keefer found in three experiments published in 2012. In the first, 114 people on an American university campus were assigned at random to three conditions, and one group was asked to rate how true of them were statements describing everyday habits of theirs that harm the environment, such as driving where they could walk; these felt more guilt than a group who read statements unrelated to the environment, and they placed more blame on oil companies for the destruction of the environment, and wished more to see them punished, than that group did, the effect of the condition on blaming running through the feeling of guilt.
In the third, sixty-four university students were assigned at random to four conditions: half read an article presenting climate change as mainly the doing of young people like themselves, and the other half an article tracing it to unknown causes; then within each half some were offered oil companies as a party that could be blamed, and others a group that could not credibly be blamed, the Amish. Those who had read the article on young people and were offered someone to blame felt less guilt than those who read it and were offered the Amish, 3.17 against 4.25 on a six-point scale, and were less willing to take part in efforts to curb global warming, 2.74 against 3.57. The companies in the experiment are not innocent in the way the one in the verse is, so the parallel, if it holds, lies in the movement of throwing and its effect on the thrower: perhaps "then throws it at one who is clear of it, has taken up" falls on this very point, since the weight grows lighter in the thrower's feeling and his wish to repair weakens, while the verse counts him as having taken up more than he was carrying.
