Commentary
The verse completes the chain of wills with its third: "Allah wills to lighten for you". Takhfīf, lightening, is from kh-f-f; khiffa is the lessening of what weighs a thing down, the doubled middle letter makes it an act done to the load that lessens it, and ʿan, "from", makes it a lifting of what lay upon those addressed. In al-Baqara the widening opened in a ruling is called by this name, ﴿ذَٰلِكَ تَخْفِيفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ﴾, "that is a lightening from your Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer) and a mercy", and there the verb of willing is joined to ease: ﴿يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ﴾, "Allah wills ease for you, and does not will hardship for you".
The preceding verses hold something in which this lightening can be seen: a door opened for one whose reach fell short, a load placed on the young women at half of what is on others, and what had passed set apart from the prohibition. At the end of al-Baqara a prayer asks that those who pray not be loaded with what was loaded on those before them, ﴿وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَيْنَا إِصْرًا كَمَا حَمَلْتَهُ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِنَا﴾, "do not load upon us a burden as You loaded upon those before us", and the Surah here, after mentioning the ways of "those who were before you", announces the will to lighten.
What shows the aim of this will is then joined to it: "the human being was created weak". The verb is in the passive, which leaves the agent unnamed and turns the speech to the created one and his make, the Creator being known from the whole run of verses. Khalq, creation, is from kh-l-q, a measuring that passes into matter and binds it into a form, and "weak" describes the state of the created one at the moment of his creating, so the weakness in the verse is bound into the first form and came into being with the human being himself.
Ḍaʿf, weakness, is from ḍ-ʿ-f, a root that holds both weakness and the double: a joined structure with a crack through which it can be reached, and a like joined to its like that parts from it as a number. Al-insān, from ʾ-n-s, carries the article that takes in the whole kind, so the statement holds for everyone who bears this name. The Surah described with the same root offspring one fears for, ﴿ذُرِّيَّةً ضِعَافًا﴾, "weak offspring", and the scheming of the shayṭān, ﴿إِنَّ كَيْدَ الشَّيْطَانِ كَانَ ضَعِيفًا﴾, "the scheming of the shayṭān has ever been weak", so in the Surah the root describes those one fears for and that which one need not fear.
The verse, then, is two sentences side by side: a will in the first and a description of creation in the second, and the wa- holds them together, so the lightening is read to the measure of the weakness. In its context this weakness comes after the mention of the desires and the great inclining, and after a verse that called patience better and opened the door for whoever fears breaking hardship, so it lies nearest to the weakness of the self before what it is drawn to.
With this verse the three wills come to an end: making clear, guidance and turning in the first, a turning set against inclining in the second, and lightening in the third, and the third alone is joined to a description of the human being himself. The bounds that came before thus come from a will that knows the make of those it addresses and weighs what it loads on them by what they can bear.
The verse closes the chain of wills with lightening, from kh-f-f, a lifting of what weighs on those addressed, a lightening already visible in the preceding verses in the door opened for one whose reach fell short, the half-load for the young women and the setting apart of what had passed. It then joins to the will a statement about creation, "the human being was created weak", with a verb that turns to the created one and his make; weakness, from ḍ-ʿ-f, is a joined structure with a crack through which it can be reached, bound into the first form, and it stands in the context close to the desires and the inclining. The lightening thus runs to the measure of the weakness, and the will that set out the bounds knows the make of those it addresses.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as referring to the lightening granted by permitting marriage with slave women in case of need, mentioned three verses earlier, or to the lightening of the rulings of the law in general; "the human being was created weak" is taken by many as his weakness in holding back from women, and by others as the weakness of his constitution and his resolve.
A reading that limits the lightening to a particular concession and fixes the aspect of the weakness.
A root-reading
Yukhaffifa (root kh-f-f): a lessening and lifting of what weighs down. Khuliqa (root kh-l-q): a measuring that binds matter into a form. Al-insān (root ʾ-n-s): the being who is at home with others and gives them ease. Ḍaʿīfan (root ḍ-ʿ-f): a joined structure with a crack through which it can be reached. The verse becomes: "Allah means to lift from you some of what weighs on you, for the human being was bound from his first making into a structure with a place where it gives way."
A reading that hears in the verse a will that weighs the load against the structure that carries it.
The two readings do not conflict. The first fixes where the lightening lies and what the weakness is; the second hears, in the roots, a load weighed against the structure of the one who carries it. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Lightening, from kh-f-f, is a loosening that lessens what weighs down and disperses it; creation, from kh-l-q, is a measuring that passes into matter and binds it into a form; the human being, from ʾ-n-s, is an inner life that comes out into the open and joins what surrounds it until it is at home with it; and weakness, from ḍ-ʿ-f, is a joined structure with a crack in it. The letters describe a being bound into a form that has a place where it gives, and a will that lessens what he is made to carry so that this place does not widen.
Second: the scene
After a long list of bounds, dues and measures, and after the mention of people who follow the desires and want a great inclining for others, a short sentence comes that shows those addressed to themselves: a being created weak, and with it a will that lightens for him. The scene is that of a will that knows the stuff of those it addresses before it loads anything on them.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
Every order that charges people according to an imagined strength they do not have ends by breaking them or being broken on them, and whoever wants a great inclining for others comes at them from the place of their weakness. The pattern the verse draws is to acknowledge the weakness first, and then to build on it a lightening that keeps the bounds standing and opens doors in them for whoever fears breaking hardship.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
"The human being was created weak" may parallel what biologists observe: the human newborn comes into the world more helpless than the young of most mammals and remains dependent on others for many years. Some trace this to the size of the brain and the narrowness of the birth canal, so that the human being is born before reaching maturity and completes much of his growth outside the womb; they call this question the "obstetrical dilemma", and it is still debated. If the parallel holds, the weakness is bound into the first making, as the verb "was created" says.
The joining of weakness with the mention of those who follow the desires may perhaps parallel what behavioural research describes: human self-control is limited and quickly gives way before a pleasure that is at hand, and people commonly prefer a small reward now to a larger one later, what George Ainslie and others have studied under the name of "hyperbolic discounting". There may be, in the lightening the verse wills, something close to what some of these researchers conclude, that arrangements made for people succeed when they take account of the limits of their will and falter when they assume a self-control without limit.
