Commentary
The verse opens with fa- and a question, "What is it with you," and the question mā lakum stops at a state in which those addressed stand, rejects it and asks for its cause; the same question came in this passage in the seventy-fifth verse, "What is it with you that you do not fight in the way of Allah." The condition rejected here is "two parties": those addressed have become two groups over the hypocrites. A fiʾa is a band of people, and fiʾatayn, "two parties," describes the condition of those addressed, so the question falls on this very condition, asking for its cause and rejecting it.
The Book names two parties elsewhere that were the two sides of a meeting in battle, "two parties that met"; the two parties here, however, are made of those addressed themselves, divided over the matter of others. The munāfiq, from n-f-q, is one who has made for himself two passages in a matter, going in by one and out by the other, and over the one with two passages those addressed have become two parties.
A clause with wa then describes how things stand with these people at the moment those addressed are divided over them, "when Allah has turned them back headlong for what they earned," so the division is over a people already turned back on their heels. Irkās is from r-k-s: turning a thing back on its heels until its front is overturned onto its end; one says rakasa al-shayʾa when he overturns a thing and makes its top its bottom, and irtakasa fī l-amr of one who went back and fell into what he had come out of. This root occurs in the Book only in this verse and in the ninety-first: "every time they are returned to the trial, they are turned back headlong into it."
The bāʾ in "for what they earned" ties the turning back to their earning, and earning, kasb, from k-s-b, is stretching the hand toward a thing, holding it and gathering it to oneself. The verse attributes the turning back to Allah and makes what they were turned back by the very things they gathered to themselves with their own hands. The two words stand side by side, arkasahum and kasabū, and both carry k and s in sequence, so the turning back is heard in the wording as an echo of the earning.
A second question follows: "Do you want to guide one whom Allah has let stray?" It names a will present in those addressed, or in some of them: to guide these people who have been turned back. Guidance, from h-d-y, is a gentle going ahead of the traveller that keeps him company along his road; straying, ḍalāl, from ḍ-l-l, is going out into a wide space with no landmark to hold the traveller. Aḍalla, "let stray," is on the pattern afʿala with Allah as its subject, and earlier in the same verse the turning back was "for what they earned," so the letting stray ascribed to Allah stands in a verse that ties what befell them to what they did.
The speech then moves from the particular to the general, "Whomever Allah lets stray, you will not find for him a way," and the address shifts from the plural in "do you want" to the singular in "you will not find," so the ruling is turned to a single addressee, like the one told "fight" in the eighty-fourth verse, or to each one who hears it, one by one; the verse leaves this open. Lan negates in the future, and "a way," being indefinite, takes in every road: sabīl, from s-b-l, is an open, drawn-out channel travelled to its end, so for one left in the wide space with nothing to hold him, no one finds an open channel by which he might come out.
A construction of the same kind came in the fifty-second verse of this Surah, "whomever Allah drives far away, you will not find for him any helper," and the words recur exactly in the hundred and forty-third verse, after the description of people "wavering between that"; "whomever Allah lets stray, you will not find for him a way" occurs in no other place. By closing on "a way," the verse is joined to what follows, for the way recurs in the next two verses: "in the way of Allah," then "Allah has made for you no way against them."
The verse asks those addressed about their division into two parties over the hypocrites, from n-f-q, the people of two passages, and it rejects the division on the ground that the matter of these people has already been turned: Allah has turned them back headlong, from r-k-s, a root that occurs in the Book only here and in the ninety-first verse, that is, turned them back on their heels, for what they earned, from k-s-b, that is, for what their hands gathered to themselves. It then asks about the will to guide one whom Allah has let stray, guidance, from h-d-y, being a going ahead of the traveller on his road, and straying, from ḍ-l-l, a going out into open space with nothing to hold one. It closes with a general ruling in which the address turns to the singular: whomever Allah lets stray, no way, from s-b-l, will be found for him, a ruling that returns word for word in the hundred and forty-third verse and opens onto the way that recurs in the two verses after it.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read about a party that went out with the Prophet toward a fight and then turned back on the way, after which his companions split into two groups over them: one said "We fight them," the other said "We do not fight them." Another report connects it with people who professed Islam, stayed among the associators and did not emigrate, and about whom the Muslims differed. Arkasahum is taken to mean that He returned them to covering (kufr) and to the rulings that apply to its people for what they did, and aḍalla to mean that He forsook them, or judged them to be astray.
A reading that ties the two parties to one particular disagreement, and makes the turning back a return to covering.
A root-reading
Al-munāfiqūn (root n-f-q): those who have two passages in a matter, going in by one and out by the other. Arkasahum (root r-k-s): a turning back on the heels that overturns a thing's front onto its end. Kasabū (root k-s-b): what the hand reached for and gathered to its owner. Tahdū (root h-d-y): a gentle going ahead of the traveller on his road. Aḍalla (root ḍ-l-l): going out into an open expanse with nothing to hold one. Sabīlan (root s-b-l): an open, drawn-out channel. The verse becomes: "What is it with you, that you have become two over the people of two passages, when Allah has turned them back on their heels for what their hands gathered? Do you want to go ahead of one whom Allah has left in the open expanse with nothing to hold him? Whomever Allah leaves so, you will not find for him a passage."
A reading that hears in the verse a division outside, and a turning back on the heels made by what the hands earned.
The two readings do not conflict. The first ties the verse to one particular disagreement; the second hears, in the roots, a people turned back by what they earned, and a community dividing over what has already been turned back. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
The munāfiq (n-f-q) is the holder of two passages; irkās (r-k-s) is a turning back on the heels in which a thing's front is overturned onto its end; kasb (k-s-b) is a hand stretched toward a thing that gathers it to its owner; ḍalāl (ḍ-l-l) is a going out into an expanse with nothing to hold one; guidance (h-d-y) is a going ahead of the traveller on his road; sabīl (s-b-l) is an open, drawn-out channel. The letters draw a movement that begins with a hand gathering to its owner and ends with the owner turned back on his heels by what it gathered, and then stops at an open space in which no open passage is found.
Second: the scene
A single community looks at people who have two passages, and splits over them into two halves. The speech cuts this split with a question: what is it with you? It then shows those who dispute what they were not looking at: these people have been turned back on their heels, and what they were turned back by is what their own hands earned. The view then turns to whoever wants to walk ahead of them on a road they have been turned away from, and the scene closes on a ruling that reaches each hearer alone: whomever Allah lets stray, you will not find for him a way.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
It recurs in communities that they divide over whoever stands at their borders with two faces: one party sees in him an enemy to be faced, another sees a kinsman whose return is hoped for, and the two are taken up with their own disagreement more than with what the wavering one has done to himself. The pattern the verse fixes is that what a person earns with his own hand comes back to shape him and turns him back on his heels, and that the will to guide him from outside stops at what he has become.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
"He turned them back headlong for what they earned" may parallel what the psychologist Daryl Bem proposed in his theory of "self-perception" (1967, 1972): that people come to know their own attitudes and inner states partly by inferring them from observing their own outward behaviour, so that the act comes back upon the one who did it and tells him who he is. Among the experiments read in this light is that of Jonathan Freedman and Scott Fraser (1966): homeowners in an American town were asked a small favour, such as putting a small sign in a window or signing a petition, and about two weeks later someone came asking them to set up a large, unattractive sign in front of the house. In one of the groups about three quarters of those who had first been asked the small favour agreed, whether or not they had granted it, while fewer than one in five of those who were asked only the large request did, and the researchers suggested that those who had granted the first may have come to see themselves as the kind of people who do such things. Perhaps there is in this something that brings close the sense of a turning back that comes "for what they earned": what the hand gathered comes back to make its owner.
"Do you want to guide one whom Allah has let stray?" may meet what Lee Ross, Mark Lepper and Michael Hubbard (1975) found in what is called "belief perseverance": they gave university students fabricated results about their ability to tell genuine suicide notes from fictitious ones, then told them that those results had been fixed in advance and had nothing to do with their performance, and the participants afterwards still rated their ability in a way that leaned toward what they had first been told. A belief once formed may outlast the removal of what it stood on, and perhaps there is something like this in the verse's question: a guidance that those addressed want to bring from outside, for people in whom what turned them back has already settled within.
