Commentary
The verse ties the second case to the same verb that tied the first: "a blow strikes you", then "a bounty reaches you", so whatever comes to the group, hardship or increase, comes to it by the same road and lands on the group itself. Faḍl, bounty, from f-ḍ-l, is what exceeds need and remains over after it; it is described as "from Allah", the very wording by which the seventieth verse named what the obedient came to: "that is the bounty from Allah". There it was definite, pointing to what had been described before it; here it is indefinite and holds true of any increase that reaches the group from Allah.
The condition here, however, is bound with an oath: wa-laʾin, whose lām set before in signals an oath left unspoken, and its answer is la-yaqūlanna, with the lām and the heavy nūn; the condition in the previous verse, "if a blow strikes you", had no oath, and its answer, "he says", no emphasis. The saying spoken at the bounty is thus sworn to, and the verse affirms it more strongly than it affirmed the first.
Before his words are reported, a clause cuts in: "as though there had never been any affection between you and him". Kaʾan is the lightened form of kaʾanna, likening what appears to what it resembles, and it falls between "he will surely say" and what he says, at the point where the voice begins, so it describes the tone of the speech to come: the speech of one with no bond between himself and those he speaks of. Mawadda, affection, from w-d-d, is an attachment knotted around the one who is loved and holding to him; it is the bond that makes any bounty reaching the group a joy to everyone in it.
The clause holds two pronouns facing each other: "between you", for those addressed, and "between him", for the speaker, so the verse measures the distance from its own side just as he measured it from his when he said "with them". Kaʾan leaves open what lies behind the likeness: whether there had been affection between them that has gone missing from his speech, or whether there never was any; the clause describes what shows in the words at the moment of speaking, and leaves what is within to the knowledge of Allah.
Then come his words: "Would that I had been with them". Layta here is a wish for what has slipped past, and the yā before it is a call that raises the voice with the wish. The word whose absence was a favor in the previous verse becomes here the object of the wish: at the blow, "since I was not with them", at the bounty, "would that I had been with them". The measure in both cases is what befell the group, the talk in both cases is about himself, and the group in both cases is "them".
The fa in fa-afūza makes the attainment the fruit of being with them, the verb after it taking the subjunctive as the answer to the wish. Fawz, attainment, from f-w-z, is a crossing that pushes through until it passes what stands in its way and reaches what it sought, and fawzan ʿaẓīman, "a great attainment", strengthens the verb with its own noun and describes it by greatness; greatness, from ʿ-ẓ-m, is a massive, close-knit bulk. In the thirteenth verse the Surah named the entry of the obedient into gardens "the great attainment"; here the phrase is on the tongue of one who weighs attainment by the bounty the people received. The next verse promises the one who fights in the way of Allah "a great reward", whether he is killed or prevails, so the greatness there is bound to fighting in the way and holds for both outcomes alike.
The verse ties the second case to the verb that tied the first: the blow that struck the group in the previous verse, and here the bounty from Allah that reaches it, bounty, from f-ḍ-l, being an increase over need. It affirms what he says in this case with an oath, and places before his words a clause that describes their tone: as though there were no affection between him and those addressed, affection, from w-d-d, being a bond knotted around the one loved, and the verse leaves open whether affection had been there and gone missing or had never been. He then wishes he had been "with them", so the word whose absence was a favor at the blow becomes a wish at the bounty, and the attainment he wishes for, from f-w-z, is a crossing to what is sought, which he weighs by what the people received.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is usually read as completing the portrait of the hypocrite in the verse before: if those who have given trust win victory and spoils, he says with regret, "Would that I had been with them, so as to gain a large share of the spoils." Many take the clause "as though there had never been any affection between you and him" as an interjection between the saying and what is said, and some connect it in meaning with his words in the previous verse.
A reading that makes the bounty spoils, and the attainment a share of them.
A root-reading
Aṣābakum (root ṣ-w-b): what comes down until it lands on the group, whether hardship or increase. Faḍl (root f-ḍ-l): an increase over need. Mawadda (root w-d-d): a bond knotted around the one loved and holding to him. Afūza (root f-w-z): a crossing that pushes through to what is sought. The verse becomes: "If an increase from Allah comes down on you, he will say, with emphasis and in the tone of one with no bond between himself and you: would that I had been in their company, to cross with them to a great goal."
A reading that hears in the verse the word "with them" turning from a favor in absence into a sorrow over it.
The two readings do not conflict. The first specifies the bounty and the attainment; the second hears, in the roots, a scale that swings with what befalls the group, and a bond missing from the words. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Striking, from ṣ-w-b, is something coming down until it lands on the one it was aimed at, and in the two verses it serves for the blow and for the bounty alike. Bounty, from f-ḍ-l, is an increase that goes beyond the limit; affection, from w-d-d, is a knot that closes around the one loved and holds; attainment, from f-w-z, is a crossing that pushes through to what lies beyond the obstacle. The letters draw a group on which whatever comes down comes down, and one who stands outside it and weighs each thing that comes down by what returns to him: a crossing he wishes for when the increase overflows, while the knot that would tie him to the group is missing in both cases.
Second: the scene
A group goes out and one of its members stays behind. News comes that hardship has struck those who went out, and he says: Allah has favored me, since I was not with them. Then other news comes, that a bounty from Allah has reached them, and he says, in the same voice: would that I had been with them. Between the two reports this one is where he was; what changed is what befell the group, and all his words changed with it.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This voice recurs wherever people go out for a common cause and someone stays behind to wait for the outcome: if it turns out badly, he counts his staying behind as wisdom and a favor; if it turns out well, he counts it a loss and a grief, and in both cases he judges his choice by what befell others, rather than by what the choice was at the moment it was made. A second pattern recurs with it, laid bare by the pronouns: whoever stands outside the group speaks of it as "them" in hardship and in ease alike, and what would make the people's joy his own joy is missing from his words. The next verse sets against this measure a promise that holds for both outcomes: whether the one who fights is killed or prevails.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
This speaker's judging of his staying behind by the outcome that befell others may parallel what Jonathan Baron and John Hershey in 1988 called "outcome bias": they presented participants with decisions made under uncertainty, in medical treatment and in monetary gambles, described the information the decision-maker had in hand, and then varied the outcome alone; participants rated the very same decision as better, and judged its maker more competent, when it ended in a good outcome. "Allah has favored me" and "would that I" may perhaps give a picture of this scale: a single decision, staying behind, weighed once as a favor and once as a loss according to how things turned out for the others.
The shift of "with them" between the two verses may also meet what Robert Cialdini and his colleagues found in 1976 in field studies of students at American universities: students wore clothing bearing their university's name more often after their American football team had won than after it had lost, and when asked about the result of a game they used "we" more often in describing a victory than in describing a defeat; the researchers called this "basking in reflected glory". The speaker in the two verses may perhaps travel the same road from another side: he draws away from the group when it is struck, and wishes to be in it when the bounty reaches it, while in his words the group is "them" in both cases.
